NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND (August 7, 2016) The Danbury Westerners got out to an early 1-0 lead in the
third inning, but the Newport Gulls tallied six runs in the middle innings to
down their New England Collegiate Baseball League rivals by the score of 6-5 to
win the best-of-three playoff series. The game, which was played at Cardines Field
in Newport on Friday, August 5, 2016, saw 2,105 fans, saw Danbury cut the
Newport lead to one in the eighth inning. Newport held on after the late
three-run onslaught, to advance in the playoffs.
Newport scored two runs in the fifth inning; following up
with a single run in the sixth and three runs in the seventh to secure the win.
Second baseman Cole Fabio (Bryant University) was three-for-three at the plate,
scoring two runs while third baseman Trey Harris (University of Missouri-Columbia)
had three RBI while going one-for-two at the plate. Newport starter Andrew Gist
(University of Georgia) received the win, his sixth on the season while pushing
his ERA to 1.50. Dylan Stock (Binghamton University), starting for Danbury, was
credited with the loss. The right-hander pitched 4-2 innings and gave up two
earned runs off three hits while striking out five. The loss drops his record
to 3-7 for the season. Paul Campbell (Clemson University) received the save
pitching one inning in relief.
Danbury finishes the season with a 21-24 record and a 1-2
playoff mark. The Gulls post a 26-19 season record and a 2-1 mark in the
playoffs. Newport will next face the Mystic Schooners (29-15, 2-1) beginning on
Saturday, August 6 in Mystic, Connecticut. They will return to Cardines Field
on Sunday, August 7. The third game, if needed, will be played back in Mystic
on Monday, August 7.
