No. 6 North Shore falls to No. 5 Manvel 26-13

HOUSTON, TEXAS (September 1, 2016) The No. 5 (Class 5A) Manvel Mavericks scored two touchdowns in the final moments of the game to down the No. 6 (Class 6A) North Shore Mustangs by the score of 26-13 at Galena Park ISD Stadium in Houston on Thursday, September 1, 2016. With the win, the Mavericks go to 2-0 in 2016 while North Shore falls to 1-1.

After driving down the field on their initial possesses, North Shore was forced to punt and Manvel took over on their 27-yard line. The drive was capped with a 47-yard pass from quarterback Kason Martin to wide receiver Keylon Stokes. Attempting a kicking conversion, the Manvel kick was blocked; giving the Mavericks a 6-0 lead with 7:06 remaining in the first quarter.

After some heated back-and-forth action in the second quarter, the Mustangs had a good drive stalled on a fourth-and-ten play offensive penalty. Head coach Jon Kay decided to try for the field goal, with kicker Jonathan Rodriguez booting the ball 32 yards for the score with 7:04 left in the first half. Manvel finished 24 minutes of play with a 6-3 lead at halftime.

After trading touchdowns in the third quarter, Manvel, who failed on a two-point conversion, still led the Mustangs 12-10. North Shore took a 13-12 lead with 10:24 remaining in the game on another 32-yard field goal by Rodriguez. That score held until the 1:34 mark where Manvel score a touchdown on a 60-yard pass from Marin to Cam Scott. Luis Moreno kicked the extra-point to give the Mavericks a 19-13 lead. After kickoff, the Mustangs drive failed and Manvel scored again with 51 seconds left. A 29-yard run by Sam Smith and another Moreno kick sealed the 26-13 win for Manvel.
