UPDATE: Cuban Defections During Gold Cup 2007

By Robert H. Kelly

(Houston, Texas, June 13, 2007) It has now come to light that two Cuban soccer players participating in the Gold Cup 2007 are missing and presumed to have defected.

Before last night’s match against Honduras, Cuban forward Lester More and midfielder Osvaldo Alonso were not in attendance at Houston’s Reliant Stadium and there whereabouts are unknown.

It was previous reported that only Alonso had defected, but updated information added More to the list.

There has been no official word from the Cuban camp. However Cuban coach Raul Gonzalez was quoted saying “It’s morally wrong to elave your country.”

These two players join Alberto Delgado and Ret Angel Martinez who defected at the 2002 and forward Maykel Galindo who followed suit in 2005.
