1st Medal of the 2008 Olympics Awarded

HOUSTON, TEXAS (August 8, 2009) and BEIJING, CHINA (August 9, 2008) The first medals of the Games of the 29th Olympiad have been awarded in women's 10-meter air rifle and a young woman from the Czech Republic receives the gold.

Katerina Emmons scored 503.5 points to defeat Russia's Lioubov Galkina, who scored 502.1 points to take the gold medals and establish a new Olympic record.

Croatia's Snjezana Pejcic finished with the bronze medal with a score of 500.9 points.

American Jamie Beyerle finished fourth with a score of 499.6 points.

Du Li of China, who was the overwhelming favorite, finished 5th and out of the medals. She won the gold medal in Athens while Galkina repeated her silver medal.

It was a great performance for Jamie Beyerle who finished in fourth place.

The air rifle competition is taking place at the Beijing Shooting Range Hall.
