National MS Society Raises Handlebar with 26th Annual BP MS 150 Bike Ride, April 17 – 18

HOUSTON, TEXAS (March 18, 2010) An estimated 13,000 cyclists will make the two-day, 180-mile journey from Houston to Austin as part of the 26th Annual BP MS 150, supporting the National Multiple Sclerosis Society:

Lone Star in its quest to create a world free of multiple sclerosis (MS).

Throughout its 26-year history, the Houston-to-Austin MS 150 has experienced monumental growth, evolving from 237 cyclists that raised $117,000 in 1985 to its current capacity of 13,000 riders that endeavor to raise a record $18 million this year. Funds raised support research, programs and services provided Lone Star that benefit an estimated 20,000 people affected by MS in 174 Texas counties.

“The passion shared by cyclists, sponsors and volunteers alike is a significant component to the success of this event year after year,” explained Mark Neagli, Regional Executive Vice President. “The BP
MS 150 is a unifying force that connects all involved with the thousands of people who live with MS every day. We’ve seen cyclists join the ride with fitness as the primary motivator, only to be transformed into some of our most avid supporters. It’s a powerful movement that compels people to take action.”

The BP MS 150 has long been regarded as one of the nation’s premier fundraising rides due to its experienced management and commitment to safety. As part of this commitment, and new this year, BP MS 150 cyclists will have access to TrainingPeaks, the official training software of Bike MS events nationwide that places safety at the forefront. The complimentary subscription includes custom cycling training plans
created specifically for the National MS Society by Joe Friel, a highly regarded trainer of endurance athletes.

For beginner and intermediate cyclists, the National MS Society now offers Get there Safely, an online video that enables viewers to put safety tips into practice, with a focus on what to wear, bike condition, food and hydration, how to ride in a group and additional resources.

Cyclists will begin the ride in Houston on Saturday, April 17, 2010, and finish in downtown Austin near the State Capitol on Sunday, April 18, 2010, after an overnight celebration in La Grange. Three starting points will be offered this year – Omni Houston Hotel Westside, Rhodes Stadium in Katy and Waller High School Stadium in Waller. On day two, riders can opt for one of two routes out of La Grange as they make their way to Austin.
