PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD (November 19, 2023) On this day in 1989, on November 19, the United States men's national soccer team (USMNT) downed the Soca Warriors of Trinidad and Tobago by the score of 1-0 to qualify for the FIFA World Cup in 1990. The USMNT had not qualified for the World Cup since 1950.  The Stars and Stripes needed a win to advance and the goal by midfielder Paul Caligiuro in the 31st minute sent the United States to their first World Cup in 40 years. The USA lost all three games in their group; Czechoslovakia 5-1, Italy 1-0, and Austria 2-1.
