AUSTIN, TEXAS (July 22, 2009) Austin Turfcats defensive lineman Ryan Childress never gives up. No matter how many times he's been told no, if he wants something, his determination will not waver. He proved that this season by going to every Turfcats practice and home game despite never making the 23-man roster.
On July 11, Ryan became the Turfcats' version of Rudy when he made his debut into the SIFL in the last game of the 2009 regular season. Childress helped the Turfcats close out their regular season with a 60-28 win over the Texas Hurricanes.
"I always wanted to play professional football," Childress said. "That was my dream and now I've had the opportunity to work hard and make it a reality. Being part of game felt great and I got to help the Turfcats earn a win on their way to the championship."
"His determination and loyalty motivate the rest of team," said Turfcats head coach Chris Duliban. "He makes everyone remember that you better come to practice ready to fight for your spot and produce during the game because there are guys working hard in the wings trying to take your position."
The Turfcats (10-2) and the Louisiana Swashbucklers (11-1) face off Monday in the inaugural SIFL President's Cup championship game. Kickoff is at 6:30 p.m. from the Smuggler's Den at the Lake Charles Civic Center in Lake Charles, La. Tickets will be available at the ticket booth on game day. Seven Turfcats Named To The All-SIFL Team
AUSTIN, TEXAS (July 21, 2009) The Austin Turfcats had seven players chosen for the 2009 Southern Indoor Football League all-league team. Voting was conducted among the head coaches and front offices of the league's five charter teams along with SIFL staff and fan polling.
Fans were also allowed to vote for their player of the year at respective positions. Fans selected Austin's quarterback Deron Ellis and wide receiver Robert Quiroga as their players of the year, but neither garnered enough votes to make the all-league team.
Keith Clay tied for the all-team running back, center John Cardenas was selected as one of the four offensive line man, Kevin Earvine was selected as one of the four defensive lineman, Avery Cleveland tied for linebacker, JR Turner tied for defensive back, and Darrick Wallace was selected as the kick returner.
Clay finished the regular season third for rushing touchdowns with nine and kick return touchdowns with one, fourth for rushing yards with 183, and fifth for rushing yards per game with 22.9. He was also sixth for total offensive touchdowns with nine, seventh for scoring with 7.5 points per game and tenth for yards per rush with 3.1.
Earvine is ranked second for sacks with six, tackles for a loss with 14 and tackles among defensive ends and lineman with 28.5. Cleveland is tenth for tackles among linebackers with 16. Turner closed out the regular season ranked sixth for tackles among all positions with 33, sixth for interception returns with three, and seventh for forced fumbles with two.
Wallace topped the leader boards in six different categories: all purpose yards with 104.4 per game, touchdowns with 10.4 points per game, missed field goal return yards with 253, missed field goal return touchdowns with five and kick return touchdowns with two. He was also second for kick return yards with 401, seventh for receptions with 27, ninth for reception touchdowns with 6, and tenth for yards per catch with 10.4 and reception yards with 281.
The second seeded Turfcats (9-2) are set to take on the first seeded Louisiana Swashbucklers (11-2) Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the inaugural SIFL President's Cup championship game. With the Swashbucklers having home field advantage the game will be held at the Smuggler's Den at the Lake Charles Civic Center in Lake Charles, La. Tickets will be available at the ticket booth on game day. For ticket prices visit the Swashbucklers website at www.labucs.com.

Undefeated Swashbucklers Make First Visit to Capitol City
AUSTIN, TEXAS (May 3, 2009) This isn't something that has been manufactured for the sake of cheap publicity. The road to the SIFL championship goes through Austin and this week’s matchup against the Louisiana Swashbucklers will be a measuring stick to see how far the Turfcats have come through their third game of the season.
"It's kind of like David vs. Goliath almost," Turfcats head coach Chris Duliban said. "It's going to be a slugfest. It's going to be nasty."
The Turfcats' 64-32 road victory over the Houma Conquerors had ended only moments earlier, but few players in the Turfcats dressing room wanted to talk about or even savor the game that had just been played. The focus had promptly been placed on the task ahead.
"It'll be a great SIFL Game to watch," Duliban said.
It didn't matter that the Conquerors were winless. All that mattered was that the Turfcats took care of business. And as far as they're concerned, the right team emerged from the game. If you ask some members of the Turfcats, the game versus the Swashbucklers has been circled since day one.
The Swashbuckler has a great front office, coaching staff, and players. The formula for success of the Lake Charles squad is one that all teams in the Southern Indoor Football League want to follow. The Swashbucklers have claimed back to back Intense Football League championships and have reeled off 20 straight regular season game victories.
It was between two clubs that lead several categories in league statistics, the Turfcats are number two in scoring with 46.5 points per game versus 65.5 for the Swashbucklers. The Swashbucklers boosted their point average by an 81-0 blowout in week one of the Florida Kings at home. The Turfcats have the number one rushing offense averaging 101.5 versus 62.0 for the Swashbucklers. The rushing game led by Deron Ellis, David Banks and Keith Clay are tops in the SIFL. The Swashbucklers ground attack is led by Southern Mississippi product Tim Blackwell averaging 49.0 yards per game.
The Turfcats must eliminate mistakes like they did in week two versus Houma to have a fighting chance versus the preseason favorites. The passing game of Freddie Harrison to Sammy Knight is the best in the league.
The Turfcats will counter with Robert Quiroga, Darrick Wallace and Jackie Warren as their deep threats. The red zone defense by the Swashbucklers is number one in the league closely contested by the Turfcats being ranked number two.
"I knew all year long we were two of the top two teams in the SIFL, just my opinion (from) watching all the other teams," Turfcats Assistant Michael Finney said. "When you've got a good defense like (the Swashbucklers and the Turfcats have), you can be in any game. Teams want to simulate Louisiana and Austin, just the way we play. Turfcats snag former Avenger in hunt for championship
AUSTIN, TEXAS (March 9, 2009) The Austin Turfcats signed former Los Angeles Avenger Robert Quiroga over the weekend. The 6-foot-2-inch, 210 lbs. wide receiver and kick returner will play in the Turfcats’ inaugural season starting April 18.
“Quiroga is a threat anytime he gets near the ball,” said Turfcats General Manager and Vice President Ronald Oswalt. “He is an extra weapon in arsenal to ensure that we are the ‘fastest game on the turf.’”
Following the 2004 NFL Draft, Quiroga signed with the Baltimore Ravens and participated in their training camp.
Quiroga, a two-way player who spends most of his time on defense at “jack” linebacker, spent the last three seasons with the Los Angeles Avengers of the Arena Football League. He saw most of his time on offense when the Avengers where inside the opponents 10 yard line. Ten of Quiroga’s first 17 catches in 2007 were for touchdowns.
A three-year starter at wide receiver for Baylor University in Waco, Texas, Quiroga caught 131 passes for 1,478 yards and nine touchdowns in 46 games for the Bears. He also returned 31 kickoffs for 752 yards and two touchdowns. As a senior in 2003, he caught 42 passes for 490 yards and four touchdowns and was a first-team All-Big 12 Conference selection by both the “Waco Tribune-Herald” and the “Dallas Morning News.” Quiroga is one of only two players in Baylor history to record a 100-yard kickoff return. In 2003, he also became just the second player in Big 12 history to return two kickoffs for score in a single season.
“This was one of the pieces we wanted for our run in 2009,” Oswalt said. “Coach (Chris) Duliban and I are so excited by the addition of Quiroga. He has great talent and will be a cornerstone for the level of talent the Southern Indoor Football League has to offer.”
Quiroga attended Holmes High School in San Antonio, where he made first-team All-Greater San Antonio selection at both receiver and punter. He was listed among Texas’ Top 100 by the “San Antonio Express-News” and was an honorable mention all-state pick. Quiroga caught 51 passes for 1,061 yards and 18 touchdowns as a senior and also scored two rushing touchdowns and three on punt returns. In addition, he threw for a pair of touchdowns. A member of the Holmes track & field team, he also ran the anchor leg on the 1,600-meter relay team that captured the Class 5A state championship in 1999.

Turfcats Tickets Going Fast
AUSTIN, TEXAS (February 25, 2009) Management at the Austin Turfcats ticket offices have announced that only 1,200 seats are still available in the (SIFL Package) middle section for home games this season.“We knew we were the ‘fastest game on the turf,’ but now we have the fastest box office sales,” said Turfcat General Manager and Vice President Ronald Oswalt. “With the lower levels already sold out, we are encouraging fans to buy middle tickets before it is too late.”
Oswalt explained that there is really not a bad seat in the house, but the organization wants fans to know that tickets are going quickly due to the team’s affordable ticket prices. The Turfcats will begin their inaugural season on April 18 at the Travis County Exposition Center in Austin.

Turfcats Getting Talent For Inaugural Season
AUSTIN, TEXAS (February 24, 2009) Ronald Oswalt, general manager and vice-president of the Austin Turfcats, announced the signing of several players for the 2009 season in addition to the signing of first year player Clint Toon.Toon, who played in six games for Texas State this past season, said the transition to indoor football seemed natural.
“I think it is more of my game,” he said. “My game is short, quick passes.”
The short and quick passes employed by Toon during his time at Texas State came in handy as he slammed a career best 117-yard game against Central Arkansas and led the offensive dominance over Stephen F. Austin State University in the team’s 52-29 victory.
Before joining Texas State, Toon played one season at Kilgore Junior College, which won the Southwest Junior College Football Conference. Before that, the Kilgore, Texas native played for his hometown high school football and baseball teams. The Kilgore Bulldogs finished with a 21-5 record during Toon’s two-year tenure on the football team.
The Turfcats also signed the following players to a contract to attend camp and compete for a spot in the inaugural team.

The team expects to sign several more players in the next few weeks and is preparing for their mini-camp slated to start in mid-March.
“These players will set the tone for this team and leave their footprint on this franchise,” Oswalt said. “We have spent extensive time on this roster and we are only about halfway there, this next month will be a building process.”

Turfcats Add Longhorn and NFL Experience To Coaching Staff
AUSTIN, TEXAS (January 8, 2009) Former Dallas Cowboy and University of Texas player Chris Duliban has been appointed Head Coach of the Austin Turfcats for its inaugural season in the Southern Indoor Football League, Vice President and General Manager Ronald Oswalt announced today.
Joining Duliban as Assistant Coach will be Kerry Cash, another former Longhorn who played with the Indianapolis Colts.
"The Turfcats will be led by two skilled and highly-respected individuals whose credentials as leaders and winners speak for themselves,'' Oswalt said. “We pride ourselves at the Austin Turfcats in breaking new ground in how we'll play as well as in creating our team leadership." "Chris Duliban and Kerry Cash bring the kind of coaching experience and passion for Austin football that is the basis of the SIFL.''
Duliban was an all-city running back at Spring Woods High School, but was converted to an outside linebacker at Austin. After "scratching and fighting," Duliban started his senior year and earned second-team All-Southwest Conference honors as well as the D.X. Bible Team Spirit Award in 1985.
He was drafted by Tom Landry and the Dallas Cowboys in 1986 in the 12th round (307th overall) and spent a year with the Buffalo Bills in 1988. His coaching career began at Hyde Park Baptist High School in 1996. He earned his first indoor coaching opportunity as the defensive coordinator of the Texas Terminators of the Indoor Professional Football League in 1999.
Duliban added, “I am excited and honored to be the Head Coach for the Turfcats inaugural season. I love the city of Austin and the central Texas area. As a resident of this area for over 28 years, I am glad to bring professional football to central Texas.”
Last season, Duliban served as Head Coach for the Centex Barracudas of the Intense Football League in Belton, Texas. He also guided the team to their first playoff victory in team history versus the Alaska Wild.

Turfcats Partner with KTSW for Texas State FCS Football Playoffs
AUSTIN, TEXAS (November 27, 2008) The Austin Turfcats announced that the team will partner with KTSW radio in San Marcos, Texas for coverage of Texas State football. The playoff game can be heard live throughout the San Marcos area on KTSW and on the www.txstatebobcats.com website beginning 90 minutes before the 1:00 p.m. (CT) kickoff.
Texas State earned the NCAA Division I FCS berth after winning the Southland Conference Championship with a 5-2 league record. The Bobcats enter the game having won their last five road games, and that is the most road games ever won by a Texas State football team in a single season. This also is the first outright conference championship for the Bobcats since 1982, when Texas State was the NCAA Division II national champions with an 11-0 record. Texas State won the Lone Star Conference outright that season.
The Bobcats finished the regular season with an overall record of 8-4. That is the first time the Bobcats have won eight games in a season since 2005 when Texas State advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Division I FCS Playoffs with an 11-3 record. This also marks the second time since 1983 that Texas State has won eight games in a season.
