MEXICO CITY, MEXICO (June 11, 2026) The 2026 FIFA World Cup began with a memorable night in Mexico City as Mexico national football team defeated South Africa national football team 2-0 in the tournament’s opening match.
Playing in front of a packed home crowd, Mexico gave its fans plenty to celebrate. The hosts took control early and never looked back, earning three important points to start Group A play. Julián Quiñones opened the scoring in the first half after taking advantage of a defensive mistake by South Africa. The goal energized the crowd and gave Mexico an early boost.
South Africa battled hard but struggled to create scoring chances against Mexico’s organized defense. The visitors faced an even bigger challenge early in the second half when midfielder Sphephelo Sithole received a red card, reducing South Africa to 10 players.
Mexico continued to push forward and found a second goal in the 67th minute. Veteran striker Raúl Jiménez scored with a powerful header to double the lead and put the match out of reach. The goal was an emotional moment for Jiménez, who celebrated passionately with teammates and supporters.
The match became increasingly physical late in the game. South Africa's Themba Zwane was sent off in the 84th minute, leaving his team with only nine players. Mexico also finished with 10 men after defender César Montes received a red card in stoppage time.
The victory gives Mexico a strong start in the expanded 48-team World Cup. Next, Mexico will face South Korea, while South Africa looks to recover against the Czech Republic as the group stage continues.
