No. 4 Texas Longhorns basketball game versus Iowa State Cyclones postponed

AUSTIN, TEXAS (January 17 2021) It is being stated, in a press release from the Big 12 Conference, that the men's basketball game between the No. 4 Texas Longhorns and Iowa State, scheduled for Wednesday, January 20 has been postponed due to COVID-19 issued within the Cyclone program.

The Big 12 Conference will work with the universities to reschedule the game.

 

Texas (11-2, 5-1 Big 12) will return to the court when it plays at TCU on Saturday, January 23. with game time is set for 5 p.m. CST at Schollmaier Arena in Ft. Worth. The game will be televised nationally by ESPN2.

No. 4/4 Texas Longhorns men’s basketball sweeps Phillips 66 Big 12 weekly awards

IRVING, TEXAS (January 11, 2021) University of Texas junior guard Andrew Jones has been named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Player of the Week, while freshman forward Greg Brown has been tabbed the Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Newcomer of the Week, the league office announced Monday.

 

This marked Jones’ second career weekly conference honor, as he previously earned Co-Player of the Week accolades on March 2, 2020. It marked Brown’s second weekly conference honor this season, as he claimed Newcomer of the Week honors on Dec. 21.

 

Jones, who also earned NCAA.com National Player of the Week recognition on Monday, averaged 19.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game while hitting 16-of-34 (.471) field goals, including 7-of-16 (.438) from three-point range, in 36.1 minutes per contest during UT’s two victories last week. In Tuesday’s home win against Iowa State, he set his career high in scoring with 23 points while converting a career-best 10-of-20 field goals and added six boards and four assists in a season-high 37 minutes.

 

Jones returned to hit the game-winning three-pointer with 1.8 seconds left in Saturday’s 72-70 victory at No. 14/16 West Virginia. He tallied 16 points (4-7 threes) in 35 minutes and registered a plus-minus total of +13. Late in the first half, he became the 39th player in program history to reach the 1,000-career point milestone.

 

Brown averaged a double-double (13.5 points, 11.0 rebounds per game) while hitting 50-percent (10-20) from the floor, including a 3-of-8 (.375) mark from three-point range, in Texas’ two victories. He had 15 points (6-10 FG, 3-4 threes) and eight boards in 22 minutes on Tuesday against Iowa State. Brown returned to post his fourth double-double of the year with 12 points and 14 rebounds, tying his season high, in a season-best 33 minutes during the win at No. 14/16 West Virginia on Saturday.

 

No. 4/4 Texas (10-1, 4-0 Big 12) returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 13 when it hosts No. 15/15 Texas Tech (10-3, 3-2 Big 12). Tip is set for 8 p.m. Central at the Frank Erwin Center, and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN2.

Houston Knocks Off Oklahoma in Season Opener

Onyeje paces the Cougars with 23 points

HOUSTON, TEXAS (November 25. 2020) The University of Houston Women’s Basketball team opened its season with an 97-85 win over Big 12 foe Oklahoma on Wednesday afternoon at the Lloyd Noble Center.

 

Four Cougars turned in double-figure scoring efforts led by redshirt sophomore, Britney Onyeje with a team-high 23 points in her collegiate debut. Julia Blackshell-Fair nearly had a double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds, as Dymond Gladney (shown right) led UH in assists with seven.

 

Houston shot 43.6 percent from the field, including 31.1 percent from three-point range.

 

Oklahoma’s Madi Williams led all scorers with 25 points, as Mandy Simpson posted a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds.

 

Houston set the the tone early via a 7-2 scoring run in the first two minutes of the game. Julia Blackshell-Fair scored the first Cougar basket of the 2020-21 season, driving through the lane after gaining control of the jump ball. Sharpshooting and tough defense helped Oklahoma even things up at the halfway point of the frame, 11-11. Both teams went back-and-forth for the remainder of the first quarter before a timely three-point basket from junior Ca’Leyah Burrell gave Houston a one-point advantage at the quarter break.

 

Leading 26-25, Houston turned things up defensively in the second quarter and ultimately outscored Oklahoma 20-19. Blackshell-Fair remained poised, but aggressive earning three trips to the free throw line where she knocked down 5-of-6 free throw attempts. UH forced four OU turnovers, outscoring the Sooners 7-3 off turnovers to close out the frame. As time dwindled down, Houston redshirt senior Eryka Sidney dribbled to the top of the key where she sank a jump shot with only second left on the clock to give UH a 46-44 lead at the half.

 

The third quarter would be the turning point for the Cougars as Houston outscored Oklahoma 27-17. UH got going from behind the three-point line, knocking down four of its seven attempts. Onyeje paced the Cougars, scoring 13 of her 23 points during the third quarter, including three made three-pointers. Houston held Oklahoma to 16.7 percent shooting from three-point range, outscoring OU 6-0 in transition.

 

The Houston defense kept things tight as time winded down, forcing six fourth quarter turnovers. Fouls plagued the Cougars as Oklahoma managed to chip away at UH’s lead with help from trips to the free throw line. Freshman, Laila Blair had the hot hand in the fourth quarter, scoring seven of Houston’s 24 fourth quarter points. The Cougars held on, late ultimately picking up its second straight win over the Sooners.

     

Houston will head to Tuscaloose to face Alabama on Nov. 29. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.

HBU Huskies to face TCU Horned Frogs in first game of college basketball season for both schools

HOUSTON, TEXAS (November 24, 2020) The HBU Huskies men's basketball team kicks off their 2020-2021 season with a Wednesday, November 25 meeting against the TCU Horned Frogs at Schollmaier Arena in Fort Worth. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST. The Huskies, who are led by head coach Ron Cottrell, are returned seven lettermen from the 2019-2020, where they posted a 4-25 record, along with a 4-16 mark in Southland Conference play.

TCU comes into the game with a 16-16 record last season, finishing in seventh place in the Big 12 Conference. The Huskies and Horned Frogs have faced off seven times previously, with TCU coming out on top in six of those games; including a 90-63 win on November 19, 2017 in Fort Worth.

Baylor’s Briles Named Coach of the Year Finalist

Bears’ head coach among 10 finalists for Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year Award

HOUSTON, TEXAS (December 15, 2011)  Baylor head coach Art Briles has been selected as one of 10 finalists for the Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year Award, as announced by The American Heart Association Wednesday.

Briles, who is in his fourth season as head coach of the Bears, has led Baylor to a 9-3 record and a berth in the Valero Alamo Bowl. Baylor’s No. 12 ranking in the latest BCS Standings is the program’s highest ever, and the 11 weeks the Bears have been ranked in the AP Top 25 poll this season are its most since being ranked for 12 weeks in 1951.

Briles has coached Baylor to its first nine-win season since 1986 and guided the Bears to back-to-back bowl games for the first time since 1991-92. Baylor’s 16 wins over the last two seasons are its most since winning 18 games between 1985 and 1986. With a win in the Valero Alamo Bowl, Baylor would record the second 10-win season in program history.

The Bears also knocked off Oklahoma for the first time in program history and defeated Texas in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1991-92. Baylor’s win over Texas Tech was its first against the Red Raiders in the Big 12 era, and it clinched a perfect 4-0 record in the month of November. Those four wins equaled Baylor’s total number of November wins in the first 15 seasons of Big 12 play.

Team success translated into individual awards, as quarterback Robert Griffin III became the first Baylor player to win the Heisman Trophy and the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award. Additionally, RG3 was joined by Kendall Wright on The Associated Press All-America teams, giving the Bears two AP All-Americans for the first time since 1991.

The Coach of the Year Award will be announced during the 26^th annual Marathon Oil Corporation Paul “Bear” Bryant Awards on January 19 in Houston. The event raises funds for heart disease in the name of Paul “Bear” Bryant.

Joining Briles as finalists for Coach of the Year are: Bret Bielema (Wisconsin), Mike Gundy (Oklahoma State), Brady Hoke (Michigan), Les Miles (LSU), Nick Saban (Alabama), David Shaw (Stanford), Bill Snyder (Kansas State), Kevin Sumlin (Houston) and Dabo Swinney (Clemson).

Baylor’s Ganaway Named Rivals Big 12 Player of Week

Senior RB honored after rushing for 246 yards vs. Texas Tech

WACO, TEXAS (November 28, 2011, via press release from Baylor University) Baylor senior running back Terrance Ganaway was honored as the Rivals.com Big 12 Conference Player of the Week on Sunday, one day after leading the Bears to a 66-42 win over Texas Tech.

Ganaway rushed a school-record 42 times for 246 yards and two touchdowns against the Red Raiders Saturday at Cowboys Stadium. He ran his way to 16 of Baylor’s school record 38 first downs and had 11 rushes of nine or more yards.

Ganaway also became the eighth 1,000-yard single-season rusher in program history. His 1,195 rushing yards for the season are the second-most ever at Baylor, and he needs just 23 more yards to tie Jay Finley’s school record from a season ago. With his two rushing touchdowns against Texas Tech, Ganaway also broke Baylor’s single-season record with 14 on the year.

A native of DeKalb, Texas, Ganaway also became the first player in program history with two career games of 200 or more rushing yards. He previously ran for 200 yards against Iowa State on Oct. 8 and has now accounted for two of the six 200-rushing yard games in 110 years of Baylor football.

Ganaway rushed for at least 49 yards on at least seven carries in all four quarters against Texas Tech. He had 10 carries for 54 yards in the first quarter, seven carries for 49 yards in the second, 11 carries for 75 yards in the third and 68 yards on 14 carries in the fourth. He had a pair of 4-yard TD runs – one to give Baylor a 24-14 lead in the second quarter and another to cap the game’s scoring and give the Bears their highest point total ever in a conference game.

No. 17 Baylor (8-3, 5-3 Big 12) closes out the regular season by hosting No. 22 Texas (7-4, 4-4 Big 12) at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Floyd Casey Stadium. The Bears are 6-0 at home this season and are looking for their first 9-win season since 1986.

Rice's Perka Named to C-USA All-Academic Team

HOUSTON, TEXAS (March 6, 2009) Rice University senior forward Aleks Perka has been named to the 2009 Conference USA Men’s Basketball All-Academic Team.

Three of the five members of the all-academic team will be in action Saturday afternoon at Tudor Fieldhouse as Rice plays host to Tulsa. Golden Hurricane senior Sam Mitchell and red-shirt freshman Steven Idlet were also named to the team. Tip-off for the Tulsa/Rice game is 3 p.m.

Rounding out the squad are Houston’s Sean Coleman and Adam Williams of Marshall.

As a senior, Perka’s season statistics more than doubled his previous career scoring and rebounding averages. A sports management major with a 3.09 grade point average, Perka is averaging 6.7 points and 4.5 rebounds per game this season.

Earlier this year, Perka posted a career-high 21 points to go along with 11 rebounds in the Owls’ win over East Carolina. That performance came during a week in which he averaged 18 points and made 73.9 percent of his shots from the field.

Last summer, Perka served as the marketing intern at Sam Houston Race Park in Houston where his duties included gathering information about the visitors to the facility’s horse track and concert venue.

All five student-athletes will be in action with their respective teams at the 2009 Conference USA Men’s Basketball Championship, March 11-14 at FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tenn.

C-USA SWIMMING AND DIVING NOTEBOOK

IRVING, TEXAS (October 21, 2008) Conference USA women’s swimming teams are excelling both in the water and in the classroom. According to CollegeSwimming.com, the nation produced 91 women who received individual Academic All-American honors by achieving a GPA of 3.500 or higher and qualifying for the NCAA Championships.

Twenty-four women scored a perfect 4.000 grade point average. Texas A&M had three 4.0’s while George Mason, Minnesota and SMU had two each. The Rice women ranked 27th among the nation’s top 100 team GPA’s possessing a 3.360. Following behind the Owl’s are in-state rival SMU at No. 32 with a 3.320 GPA. Combined with their men’s team, SMU has the 10th highest GPA among combined programs with a 3.290.

In the latest CollegeSwimming.com Top 25 polls, SMU women rank No. 12. SMU women’s swimming and diving will meet head to head with five of the Top 25 ranked teams in No. 2 Georgia, No. 7 Texas, No. 9 Texas A&M, No. 19 Penn State and No. 20 Arizona State throughout the season.

East Carolina senior Amanda Duncan and Marshall freshman Liz Greenway share this week’s Conference USA Swimmer of the Week honor for the period ending Oct. 20. Duncan helped lead the Pirates to a 176-113 win over Davidson to improve to 4-0 in dual meets this season. Greenway had top times in three events to lead Marshall to a 185-79 victory over Radford in her second collegiate meet. Marshall senior Siobhan Schuurman is the Diver of the Week. Schuurman set a new personal collegiate best in the three-meter event and has swept both diving events in each of the Herd’s meets this season.

CO-SWIMMER OF THE WEEK (10/21)
AMANDA DUNCAN – EAST CAROLINA

For the second straight meet, Duncan had top finishes in the 100 and 200-butterfly for the Pirates, helping them to a 4-0 record in dual meets this season. Against Davidson, Duncan earned a pair of first-place finishes after clocking a time of 56.00 in the 100-butterfly and 2:04.31 in the 200-butterfly. This is Duncan’s second career weekly C-USA swimming honor and first of the season.

LIZ GREENWAY – MARSHALL

In her second collegiate meet, Greenway won the 100, 500, and 1000-yard freestyle events to help lead Marshall to a 185-79 victory over Radford. The freshman swimmer clocked times of in 55.65 in the 100, 5:17.49 in the 500 and 10:43.91 in the 1000-yard freestyle. In addition to her first place honors, Greenway helped the 200 freestyle relay team to a second place finish. This is Greenway’s first weekly honor.

DIVER OF THE WEEK (10/21)
SIOBHAN SCHUURMAN – MARSHALL

Schuurman won both the one-meter and three-meter events with scores of 248.18 in both events, respectively. The senior diver set a new collegiate-best in the three-meter event, bettering her previous mark of 246.45. Schuurman holds the school record in the one-meter and platform dives at Marshall and has swept every diving event of the season she has competed in. This is Schuurman’s second career weekly C-USA diving honor and first of the season.

THREE BEARS NAMED HONORABLE MENTION ALL-BIG 12

OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA (May 22, 2008) Three Baylor baseball student-athletes were named honorable mention All-Big 12 Conference, the league office announced Tuesday. Sophomore third baseman Shaver Hansen, redshirt freshman right-handed pitcher Shawn Tolleson and junior shortstop Beamer Weems were so honored.

Texas A&M shortstop Jose Duran was named Player and Newcomer of the Year. Missouri right-handed pitcher Aaron Crow earned Pitcher of the Year honors, while Texas right-handed pitcher Chance Ruffin was selected Freshman of the Year. Texas A&M's Rob Childress was named Coach of the Year after leading the Aggies to the regular-season Big 12 title with 19-8 league record that included a conference-record 16-game winning streak.

Hansen, a product of Fruita Monument High School in Grand Junction, Colo., hit .314 with six home runs and 42 RBI this season. He leads the team in runs (44) and triples (5), and he is tied for the team lead in walks (30). Hansen also ranks second on the team in hits (66), total bases (110), slugging percentage (.524) and on base percentage (.402), and he is tied for second in doubles (16) and RBI.

Tolleson, a product of Allen [Texas] High School, is 5-4 on the season with a 5.00 ERA in 13 appearances, all starts. He has recorded 61 strikeouts in 72.0 innings, while holding opponents to a .262 average. Tolleson joined Kyle Evans as the only Baylor pitchers to record multiple shutouts in Big 12 play, tossing a two-hit shutout against Oklahoma State and a three-hit shutout at Kansas State. His other wins were against Kansas, at Mississippi State and at Texas.

Weems earned all-conference honors for the third consecutive season, joining Wayne Connolly (1954-1956) as the only Baylor shortstops to accomplish the feat. Widely regarded as one of the nation's top defensive shortstops, Weems hit .270 with seven home runs and 30 RBI this season. He also collected 53 hits, 10 doubles, two triples, 39 runs and shared the team lead with 30 walks.

FIELD SET FOR BIG 12 BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

IRVING, TEXAS (May 21, 2008) Baylor will be the sixth seed in this week's Big 12 Conference Championship at Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City. The Bears join second-seeded Oklahoma State, third-seeded Nebraska and seventh-seeded Kansas State in Pool Two. Regular-season champion Texas A&M, fourth-seeded Missouri, fifth-seeded Texas and eighth-seeded Oklahoma make up Pool One. The two pool-play winners meet in the title game.

Baylor opens play Wednesday at 4 p.m. CDT against Nebraska. Pool Two teams are not in action Thursday. The Bears return to action Friday at 7:30 p.m. against Oklahoma State. Baylor and Kansas State conclude pool play at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

This is the 12th consecutive year Baylor has qualified for the Big 12 Championship, joining Oklahoma and Oklahoma State as the only programs to have participated in each of the postseason tournaments in the league's 12-year history.

BAYLOR BASEBALL PUMMELS TEXAS TECH 13-3

LUBBOCK, TEXAS (May 17, 2008) Raynor Campbell was 4-for-6 with a home run, and Ben Booker tallied three doubles as Baylor defeated Texas Tech 13-3 in Saturday's Big 12
Conference action at Dan Law Field. The Bears (31-23, 11-15) clinched a spot in next week's Big 12 Championship with the victory; Baylor will be the sixth seed in the event. The Red Raiders (24-30, 8-18) were eliminated from postseason contention with the loss.

It was Baylor's largest margin of victory in a Big 12 road game since a 13-2 victory at Kansas in 2005. The Bears, who averaged 2.5 runs per game in 12 conference road games before Saturday, scored in six of nine innings. Baylor produced 16 hits, 10 of which were for extra bases.

Shaver Hansen got the scoring started with a two-out, three-run homer in the top of the first. After Texas Tech got a Jason Seefeld leadoff homer in the second, the Bears answered with a four-run third to take control of the game. Campbell opened the inning with a double, and Beamer Weems followed with a homer down the line in right. Dustin Dickerson added an RBI single, and Adam Hornung capped the inning with an RBI double. The Red Raiders never threatened again.

Mace Thurman (3-1) earned the victory for the Bears, allowing one run on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts over 4.1 innings of relief. Starter Craig Fritsch was touched for two runs on three hits and five walks with one strikeout over 4.1 innings; he left the game after consecutive walks to load the bases with one out in the fifth. After Thurman ran into trouble in the ninth, loading the bases on three singles, Randall Linebaugh retired Doug Thennis on a fly ball to deep center to end the game.

Baylor pushed its lead to 10-1 thanks to Campbell's leadoff homer in the fourth and two runs on a wild pitch and Gregg Glime's sacrifice fly in the fifth. Tech got a run back on Roger Kieschnick's RBI groundout in the bottom of the fifth. Joey Kenworthy's RBI double in the seventh cut Baylor's lead to 10-3, but the Bears closed strong. Booker clubbed an RBI double, and Dustin Dickerson had a sacrifice fly in the eighth. Glime doubled with one out in the ninth and scored on Campbell's RBI single.

Tech starter Chad Bettis (4-5) took the loss, allowing eight runs on eight hits and three walks with two strikeouts over 3.0-plus innings; he left the game after Campbell's leadoff homer in the fourth.

Eight of Baylor's nine starters collected at least one hit. Dickerson, Hornung and Weems all joined Booker and Campbell with multiple-hit games, each collecting two hits. Campbell, Dickerson and Weems each had two RBI. Booker and Campbell scored three times each, and Dickerson touched home twice.

Baylor and Texas Tech conclude the series Sunday at 1 p.m. CDT. The Bears are not yet settled on a starter; it will be either right-hander Tim Matthews (5-1, 3.33 ERA) or right-hander Willie Kempf (6-2, 3.79). The Red Raiders are scheduled to start right-hander Nate Karns (2-6, 9.00 ERA).

NOTES: Texas Tech leads the all-time series 69-66, including a 43-21 advantage in games played at Lubbock. The Bears are 19-28 against Tech during head coach Steve Smith's tenure. Baylor is 18-21 against the Raiders during the Big 12 era, including a 15-20 mark in regular-season meetings. ... Baylor moves to 2-12 at Dan Law Field since 2000. BAYLOR’S TOLLESON NAMED BIG 12 PITCHER OF THE WEEK

IRVING, TEXAS (March 17, 2008) Baylor right-hander Shawn Tolleson was named Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday. Tolleson was so honored after tossing a complete-game, two-hit shutout in Baylor’s 3-0 victory over then-No. 23 Oklahoma State last Saturday night at Baylor Ballpark. Nebraska first baseman Craig Corriston was named Big 12 Player of the Week.

This is the first time Tolleson, a redshirt freshman from Fairview, Texas, has been so honored. He is the 13th Baylor pitcher to earn the weekly honor in the league’s 12-year history, joining Kris Lambert, Jason Jennings (four times), Chad Hawkins, Kyle Evans (twice), Steven White (twice), Jared Theodorakos, Cory VanAllen (three times), Mark McCormick (four times), Abe Woody, Ryan LaMotta, Wade Mackey and Kendal Volz. Baylor has produced at least one Big 12 Pitcher of the Week each season in the league’s existence save 2003.

Tolleson tossed the complete-game shutout in only the fourth start of his career. In fact, only VanAllen, who was honored after his first career start, earned Big 12 Pitcher of the Week honors earlier in his career. Tolleson is the second Baylor pitcher in four weeks this season to be named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week, joining Volz who won the season’s first honor.

It was Baylor’s first shutout since Mackey’s two-hit gem in a 3-0 victory at then-No. 23 TCU last season. Tolleson’s was the Bears’ first in a Big 12 game since April 7, 2006, when LaMotta tossed a three-hit shutout in Baylor’s 14-0 victory over Oklahoma State.

A product of Allen High School, Tolleson held the final 22 batters of the game hitless, allowing a two-out single in the second and a one-out bunt single in the third. He retired 13 of the game’s final 14 batters, allowing only a leadoff walk in the ninth. Tolleson used only 108 pitches and exceeded 16 pitches in an inning only once – a 21-pitch second. BAYLOR’S VOLZ NAMED BIG 12 PITCHER OF THE WEEK

IRVING, TEXAS (February 25, 2008) Baylor right-hander Kendal Volz was named Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday. Volz was honored after earning the victory in the Bears’ 2-1 victory over Purdue in Friday night’s season opener. Oklahoma State junior second baseman Tyrone Hambly earned player of the week honors.

This is the first time Volz, a sophomore from Bulverde, Texas, has been so honored. He is the 12th Baylor pitcher to earn the weekly honor in the league’s 12-year history, joining Kris Lambert, Jason Jennings (four times), Chad Hawkins, Kyle Evans (twice), Steven White (twice), Jared Theodorakos, Cory VanAllen (three times), Mark McCormick (four times), Abe Woody, Ryan LaMotta and Wade Mackey. Baylor has produced at least one Big 12 Pitcher of the Week each season in the league’s existence save 2003.

Volz held Purdue scoreless on four hits and two walks over 8.0 innings with 10 strikeouts. His strikeout total was the best by a Baylor pitcher in a season opener since 1989. It was the second double-digit strikeout performance of his career; Volz recorded 13 strikeouts against Oklahoma in last year’s Big 12 Conference Championship.

After a one-out walk in the first, Volz settled down and retired nine consecutive batters before allowing back-to-back singles in the fourth. He also allowed a two-out single in the fifth, and a one-out hit and walk in the sixth. Volz closed strong as he retired the final seven batters he faced with four strikeouts in that span, including three of the last four.

Baylor returns to action Tuesday, hosting Texas Southern for a 6:30 p.m. CST first pitch at Baylor Ballpark. The Bears send sophomore right-hander Wade Mackey (4-3, 3.18 ERA in 2007) to the mound for his first appearance of the season.
