Rice Takes 5-4 Win Over Texas Tech at Houston College Classic

HOUSTON, TEXAS (March 2, 2008) Rice got a bases-loaded RBI single from catcher Adam Zornes in the bottom of the eighth that broke a 4-4 tie and lifted the sixth-ranked Owls to a 5-4 win over Texas Tech on Sunday afternoon in the Houston College Classic at Minute Maid Park.

The loss drops Texas Tech to 3-5 on the season while Rice improves to 6-2 and finishes the Houston College Classic with a perfect 3-0 record.

A leadoff walk by Jared Gayhart set up a two-run home run by Diego Seastrunk in the bottom of the first inning that gave the Rice Owls an early 2-0 lead. The home run was the second of the season by Seastrunk. Shortstop Rick Hague pushed the Owl lead to 3-0 with an RBI single up the middle that scored Aaron Luna who reached as a hit batter.

After going down in order the first two innings, the Texas Tech offense came roaring to life in the bottom of the third as the Red Raiders cranked out four hits and drew two walks to take a 4-3 lead. Jason Seefeld's two RBI single up the middle tied the game at 3-3 but that set up junior right fielder Roger Kieshnick who laced a double to right to give the Red Raiders their first lead of the game.

Rice picked up an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth inning as Tech shortstop Chris Hall committed his second fielding error of the game. Hall's error prolonged the Rice inning and an RBI fielder's choice by Chad Mozingo scored pinch runner Derek Myers from third.

Texas Tech had a chance to take a lead in the top of the eighth as Taylor Ashby delivered a clutch two-out single but Rice center fielder Chad Mozingo threw out Joey Kenworthy who tried to score from second.

Junior left-hander James Leverton (0-2) was charged with loss after giving up the unearned run in the bottom of the eighth. Bryan Price (1-1) picked up the win in relief for the Owls.
