WACO, TEXAS (May 12, 2008) After an eight-day break for spring semester final exams, Baylor baseball returns to action with a pair of midweek games at Baylor Ballpark. The Bears (28-22) host Texas State (27-23) at 6:30 p.m. CDT Tuesday and Stephen F. Austin (24-26) at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
This is the 56th meeting between Baylor and Texas State; the Bears hold a 41-14 advantage in the all-time series, including a 32-11 advantage in games played in Waco. Baylor is 27-9 against Texas State during head coach Steve Smith’s tenure. The Bears have won eight straight meetings since a 12-0 loss at San Marcos in 2005. Baylor won the first meeting this season 25-13 at San Marcos last month, establishing a school record for runs in a road game.
Baylor and Stephen F. Austin meet for the 26th time Wednesday. The Bears have won each of the first 25 meetings, going 21-0 in games played in Waco. Baylor defeated SFA 4-3 in the final game of the QTI Baylor Classic earlier this season. The Bears and the Jacks first met March 15, 1948, in Waco; Baylor won that game 17-12 and then defeated SFA 21-1 the following day.
A pair of senior right-handers will start on the mound for Baylor. Randall Linebaugh gets the starting nod Tuesday against Texas State, while Tim Matthews is scheduled to start Wednesday against Stephen F. Austin.
Baylor returns to Big 12 Conference action this weekend, wrapping up the regular season with a three-game series at Texas Tech. The Bears enter the season’s final weekend in sixth place in the Big 12 standings and in need of one win to clinch a berth in next week’s Big 12 Championship at Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City.
