FORT WORTH, TEXAS (AUGUST 9, 2008) TCU men’s tennis Head Coach Dave Borelli has signed a six-year contract extension, Director of Athletics Danny Morrison announced Thursday. The deal will keep the former NCAA National Coach of the Year in Fort Worth through at least the 2014 season.Borelli is entering his third season in charge of the Horned Frog men’s tennis program after serving the previous four years as head coach of the TCU women’s team.
"We are excited to announce this contract extension," TCU athletics director Danny Morrison said. "Going back to his time as the head women's coach, Dave has always done an excellent job with the tennis programs. He has a true passion for TCU. We have a lot of momentum with the men's team, highlighted by the Mountain West Conference championship this spring."
“I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to coach at TCU,” Borelli said. “I think it is a wonderful place. It really is the people here at the University that make it such a wonderful school. My goal is to continue on and raise TCU’s level of success back up to where it belongs among the nation’s top programs. I’m excited that I have the opportunity to do that.”
In only his second season in charge of the men’s team in 2008, the Frogs finished as Co-Mountain West Conference regular season champions in addition to winning the MWC Tournament crown. TCU posted a 20-8 overall record and advanced to its 17th NCAA Tournament appearance in the last 18 years, while senior Cosmin Cotet, the Co-MWC Player of the Year, led a group of four Frog all-conference selections. Cotet finished his career in the spring ranked as the ITA’s No. 30 singles player.
Borelli's took the reigns of the men's program the previous season in 2007 and coached the Frogs to three All-MWC selections, including Cotet, who ended the season ranked No. 93 in singles play. Cotet and teammate Kriegler Brink also finished the year ranked No. 44 in doubles.
Borelli arrived in Fort Worth prior to the 2002-03 academic year and helped turn TCU women’s tennis into one of the nation’s elite programs. He posted a 72-30 record (.705) in his four years as head coach and helped the squad progress from a ranking of No. 56 in 2003 to an all-time program high of No. 15 in 2006.
ITA’s Southwest Region Coach of the Year in 2005 and conference coach of the year in 2005 and 2006, Borelli guided the TCU women to the 2006 Mountain West Conference regular season and tournament championships while advancing to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA?Tournament for the first time in program history.
A 20-year veteran of the collegiate coaching ranks, Borelli has posted a 404-95 (.810) overall career record between stops at USC (1974, 1975-88) and TCU (2003-present). He helped the USC women’s team collect seven national championships during his tenure, and he was named the NCAA's National Collegiate Coach of the Year for the Women of Troy in 1981.
After leaving collegiate tennis, Borelli served as the head coach for the Sacramento Capitals, a professional tennis team, and was later a private pro tour coach for four years. He also worked as a men’s pro tour coach in charge of the rookies pro program for USA player development.
Borelli has served as the chair of the National Collegiate Tennis Coaches Committee, the Western Collegiate Athletic Association, the Pac-10 Coaches Committee and was on the board of directors for the Central California Tennis Association. He also is a former member of the ITA and NCAA's Southwest Regional committees.
