Rice's Berezhynska Joins WNBA’s San Antonio Silver Stars

HOUSTON, TEXAS (August 2, 2008) Former Rice standout Valeriya Berezhynska has signed a 7-day contract with the WNBA’s San Antonio Silver Stars.

Berezhynska reports next week to the Silver Stars’ practice facility for workouts. The WNBA season is currently in a one-month Olympic break and resumes on August 28th with San Antonio (18-9) holding a half-game lead over the Seattle Storm in the Western Conference.

Berezhynska was originally drafted by the Detroit Shock in April but was released before the season began. The Ukraine native headlined the Owls and C-USA, averaging 18.4 points and 12.6 rebounds per game in league play last season.

Berezhynska reached the 20-point mark eight times and notched the program's first career triple-double with 14 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists in a nationally-televised game at Tulane. She ended her career 10th on Rice's scoring list with 1,076 points.

“I’m very excited to get another opportunity to play in the WNBA,” Berezhynska said. “I know what to expect this time around. San Antonio has a great team. I’ll have to work extremely hard to be successful.”

San Antonio opens the second half of the season against the Phoenix Mercury on NBA TV. Becky Hammon, who played for head coach Greg Williams at Colorado State, is second on the Silver Stars averaging 17.4 points and 4.7 assists per game.
