STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA (November 1, 2008) Rice University will field a veteran five-player squad this week as the Owl golf team closes out the fall season at the Pacific Invitational in Stockton, Calif.
Rice will travel five upperclassmen for the annual tournament which the Owls will be competing in for the third straight year. Last year, Christopher Brown was the Owls' top finisher at the Pacific Invitational, carding a three-round, five-under score of 211.
'We are really looking forward to returning to Stockton for our third straight year playing in the Pacific Invitational," Rice golf coach Drew Scott said. "The team is currently playing its best golf of the year and the fact that four of the starting five have played in this event in past seasons is a great advantage. Our preparation has been very good leading up to this point, having three weeks since our last outing.
'Also, being the final event on the fall schedule, we will use this week to send us into the offseason with a positive drive towards a great spring season.' "
Joining Brown on this week's travel squad are returning lettermen Michael Whitehead, Michael Buttacavoli and Kyle Kelley along with sophomore Robert Burrow, a first-year player for Rice.
Whitehead and Burrow are the only two members of the team to play all 11 rounds this season. Whitehead has a 76.45 stroke average while Burrow has a 77.18 average. Buttacavoli has played eight rounds this fall and leads the team with a 75.00 strokes per round average.
The Pacific Invitational returns to the Brookside Country Club (par-72, 6,720 yards) in Stockton, Calif. The tournament is slated for 36 holes on Monday with the final round slated for Tuesday.
