FORT WORTH, TEXAS (January 7, 2009) TCU held four positions in the pre-spring release of the Intercolleciate Tennis Association’s (ITA) national singles and doubles rankings released Tuesday. The selections helped the Horned Frogs capture the nation’s No. 33 team rating, one spot up from their No. 34 finish in 2007-08.
Three Frogs appeared among the singles list, while the duo of junior Adrian
Simon and sophomore Emanuel Brighiu earned a top-12 doubles rating.
Simon and Brighiu were listed at No. 12 among the NCAA’s doubles field after the
two Frogs teamed up for a 7-3 record during the fall season. Included among the
results was one win over a ranked team, an 8-4 decision vs. No. 31-ranked
Dominic Inglot and Michael Shabaz of Virginia. The two Frogs advanced to the
semifinal round of the Wilson/ITA South Central Regional Championships in late
October to finish off their first-semester competition.
The TCU tandem were selected as the No. 2 doubles squad in the initial release
of the South Central Regional ratings, while senior Kriegler Brink and junior
Zach Nichols garnered the No. 11 listing.
In the singles rankings, Brighiu received TCU’s singles position at No. 94, with
Brink checking in at No. 98 and Simon marking an appearance at No. 111. Brighiu
went 6-3 in fall singles action with one victory over a rated opponent. Brink,
who was 93rd in the pre-fall rankings, also had one victory over a ranked foe
while going 5-4 during the fall season. Simon, who did not face a rated opponent
during the fall, tallied an 8-3 record.
The trio of Brighiu, Brink and Simon received the No. 14 through 16 positions,
respectively, in the South Central Regional ratings.
TCU, in its third season under Head Coach Dave Borelli, opens its spring season
Jan. 21, when it travels to Houston, Texas, to take on 24th-ranked Rice at 1
p.m.
