Burrow cards final-round 66
TUCSON, ARIZONA (February 3, 2009) Opening final-round play on the 15th hole, Rice sophomore Robert Burrow birdied the 407-yard, par-four hole and went on to fire a five-under par 66 Tuesday at Arizona National Golf Club as the Owls wrapped up play at the Arizona Intercollegiate.
After struggling to an opening round 304 (+20) on Monday, Rice finished 15th as a team at the 17-team tournament.
Burrow began the tournament with an 87 on Monday morning but came back to shoot a 74 during second-round play. He was shooting even-par for the second round before carding a bogey and double bogey on back-to-back holes that left him three-over in the round which was concluded early Tuesday. Play was halted Monday evening due to darkness with the field each having three or four holes to finish.
Burrow’s 66 on Tuesday tied for the third-lowest score of the tournament. Two players shot 65s while two others along with Burrow carded 66s at the University of Arizona-hosted tourney.
Rice was led at the spring-season, opening event by sophomore Michael Whitehead who shot a three-round score of 224 (+11). Whitehead was three strokes over par heading into the final round but shot a 79 on Tuesday. He finished in a tie for 44th.
Burrow tied for 58th with a three-round score of 227 (+14). The Charlotte, N.C., native will look to use Tuesday’s final round as a spring board in two weeks when the Owls’ play host to the 9th Annual Rice Intercollegiate presented by Srixon at Westwood Golf Club Feb. 16-17.
Pepperdine won the tournament with a three-round score of 855 (+3), three strokes ahead of San Diego State which finished second. Tennessee’s Chris Paisley shot a three-round score of 201 (-12) to capture individual medalist honors and lead the Volunteers to a third-place finish.
