SUGAR LAND, TEXAS (April 20, 2017) The defending Atlantic League Champion Sugar Land Skeeters kicked off their 2017 season with a 5-2 thumping of the Bridgeport Bluefish in front of 5,935 fans at Constellation Field in Sugar Land, Texas on Thursday, April 20, 2017. The win was their eleventh straight dating back to September 12, 2016, where they won their last four regular season games and swept the playoffs by winning six straight to capture their Atlantic League championship.
The Skeeters jumped out to an early 3-0 when designated
hitter Max Ramirez connected on a 1-1 pitch for a three-run homer. His
round-tripper send Lance Zawadski home from third base and Jeremy Barfield home
from first base. Zawadski got on base with a single and advanced to second and
third base by wild pitches by Bluefish starter Cory Riordan. Barfield got on
base with a walk. Bridgeport cut the Skeeters lead to two when right field
Ozney Guillen scored on his own home run in the third inning.
Sugar Land added to their lead in the fifth when first
baseman Andy Wilkin singled, sending home Zawadzki and Barfield from third and
second respectively while the Bluefish added a run in the eighth inning.
Starter Jake Hale received the win, by Felipe Paulino recorded the save. Cory
Riordan receiced the loss for the Blurefish.
