HOUSTON, TEXAS (April 7, 2017) The No. 14 Houston Cougars tallied home runs in the second, third, and fifth innings to lay the foundation for a 17-3 win over the East Carolina Pirates at Schroeder Park in Houston on Friday, April 7, 2017. The win pushed the Cougars to 21-8 for the season and raised their conference record to 2-2. The first home run was a three RBI shot by designated hitter Joe Davis, in the second inning was his second of the season. Catcher Conner Wong knocked his round tripper in the third inning, his fourth of the season was also a three run shot. The fifth inning saw Conner Hollis knock his home run over the left field fence. It was the first home run of the season for the startiing second baseman.
The Cougare scored their 17 runs on 13 hits, with seven of the runs coming in the second inning. Right fielder Corey Julks extended his current hitting streak to 13 with a single in the third inning. Jake Scheiner, who was selected at the National Player of the Week (March 20), was 2-for-3 with a single and a double; raising his batting average to a team-leading .407. Starter Trey Cumbie was credited with the win, his fifth of the season. The left-hander from Lufkin, Texas, pitched a solid seven innings, throwing 101 pitches to 31 batters, while striking out six. Jake Agnos, pitching 2/3 of an inning received the loss.
The Cougars and Pirates will continue the three-game weekend series on Saturday, April 8 with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
