On a very cool evening, in the somewhat comfortable confines of Houston’s Minute Maid Park, the Houston Cougars took to the field to face in number 20 Baylor in the first game for both teams at the 2007 Houston College Classic.
Houston (1-0) coming off a 15-4 thumping of Steven F. Austin on Tuesday, were looking to end a streak that has seen them finish with a 1-2 record at the Classic in each of the last four season.
Cougar Aaron Brown took to the mound to face Baylor’s Randall Linebaugh in the first assignment for each of these junior righthanders. Brown held the Bears to only one hit with five strikeouts over five shutout innings to help lead the Cougars to a 4-2 win.
Brown has an opportunity to show more than the glimpses of potential that sporadically appeared during his previous two seasons.
"On a scale of 10, I'd give it a 9.5," Cougar Coach Rayner Noble was quoted on Brown's performance "His command wasn't real great, but the thing is he made the pitches when he needed to make them.
"It's just a matter of him, from one day to the next, being consistent. Not only with his bullpens being sharp but just in his work ethic. When he understands all of the facts, he's got a chance to be very, very good."
Brown was part of a solid pitching performance by the Cougar staff, which did not allow Baylor's second hit until the seventh inning.
The Cougars struck for the game's first run in the first inning. Ryan Lormand was hit by a pitch to lead off and moved into scoring position following Jake Stewart's sacrifice bunt. Two batters later, Kingsbury slapped an RBI-single into center field to hand the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
The score remained unchanged until the fifth inning when the Cougars got three runs off four hits.
Cougar pitchers kept the Baylor offense in check until the eighth inning when the Bears struck for a pair of runs.
The Cougars will face Texas A&M at 3:00pm Saturday for the second game for each team in the tournament.

Pro Football Coming To Pasadena, Texas
By Robert H. KellyProfessional football is coming to the Pasadena area in the spring. The Houston Wild Riders, one of the expansion teams in the National Indoor Football League (NIFL), will begin play in the spring of 2007.
Few details are available as the present. What is known is that they will play their games at the Pasadena Convention Center, located on Spencer Highway in Pasadena.
They are assigned to the Pacific Conference of the NIFL, which consists of the North, California, and South Divisions. Their team colors will be blue, gray, and red.
Houston will be in the South Division with the Beaumont Drillers, Fort Worth Sixers, and the San Antonio Player Haters.
Beaumont played in the league in 2006, reaching the league championship playoffs, losing in the first round to the Katy Copperheads 55-21. Katy has since left the NIFL and moved to the Arena Football League 2.
Fort Worth and San Antonio will also begin their first year of play in the league in 2007. Fort Worth will play its home games at the Fort Worth Stock Yards while San Antonio will play at the San Antonio Rose Palace. Beaumont will continue to play in Ford Arena in Beaumont.

West Defeats East 24-7 in U.S. Army All American Bowl
The West soundly defeated the East 24-7 in the 2007 U.S. Army All American Bowl, played in the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.Linebacker Chris Gallipo from Anaheim, California was selected as the game's Most Valuable Player, receiving the Pete Hawkins Trophy.

The Fate Of David Carr
By Robert H. KellyNow that the Houston Texans' 2006 season is completed, everyone is asking or thinking the same thing.
What do the Texans do about David Carr?
That is not an easy question. The question does not have an easy answer.
Ask any fan of the Texans and you will get an equal amount of different answers. Any of their various answers could be a plausible answer to the above question.
Some out there thought the Texans should have drafted Vince Young. Others felt that the smart choice would have been Reggie Bush.
Whether the made the right choice during the 2006 draft is not the issue right now. Their main focus should be to get the best athlete they can to help them in the position they need the most help.
My thought on the matter may be an idea that the Texans should consider. My idea: draft and sign University of Houston quarterback Kevin Kolb.
He is a local favorite and would put people in the seats. He is a good quarterback and would be a definite asset to the Texans. If the Texans didn't start him right away, he would have time to develop. He could learn the offensive scheme and, I feel, would be a big help to the Texans.
This is just a thought from another person with an opinion.

Final Score: Cedar Hill 51 Cypress Falls 17

The second half saw much of the same at the first, with Cedar Hill and quarterback William Cole continue their dominance of a seeming uninspired Cypress Falls squad.
Hill, who was named the Offensive Player of the Game, lead his team to even more scores and the defense, which capitalized on every Eagle mistake was instrumental in keeping the Longhorns at bay.
Every time that Cy-Falls would take possession of the ball, they would either be pummeled by the Longhorn defense or would fail to execute. On those instances, the Eagles would pounce on them like a hungry dog, or should I say longhorn, that had missed a few meals.
Only when the Longhorns started emptying the bench, allowing the second and third string players a chance to get into the fray, did the Eagles start producing.
Their lone score in the second half came on a blocked punt, which resulted in a touchdown.
On a more positive note, both teams should be complemented on achieving the highest pinnacle in scholastic athletics; playing for a state championship.
If that was they only thing that these fine student-athletes gained from the game, then it was worth it.
However, feeling good about oneself was not the desired outcome that either team desired. Both wanted to win the state title.
In the end, one will have a very enjoyable ride back to the Dallas area, while the other will dream of what could have been, what they could have done better, and about their future in their right back to Houston.

UIL 5-A Division 2 Football Championships: Cedar Hill -vs- Cypress Falls: Halftime Report

Blogging live from the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, it is now halftime at the UIL 5-A Division 2 Football Championships between Cedar Hill High School "Eagles"and Cypress Falls High School Longhorns.
In a match that I feel should have been much closer that it is, Cedar Hill had totally dominated the Eagles. Jumping out to a 31-10 lead at halftime, the Eagles seem to be playing at a much higher level that their opponents.
Quarterback William Cole, who is totally dominating the game, has rushed for 210 yards on 12 plays and scored two touchdowns. In addition, Cole is also 6 for 10, with one interception, for 67 yards and one touchdown.
The Longhorns have 248 yard rushing and 67 yards passing for a total of 315 yards. Compare that to Cypress Falls, who only have 198 total yards, with 150 yards passing and 48 yards rushing.
Cy-Falls had possession o for 13:36 but couldn't seem to do anything with it. The offense is sluggish and when they do advance the ball, they quickly loose focus or turn the ball over.
Quarterback Jeff Welsh is 14-8 for 150 yards and one interception, but that was not enough to counteract the highly effective Longhorn offense.
Cole has simply taken control of the game and is dictating his terms to the Longhorns. Whatever college or univeristy gets this young man is in store for a multitude of victories.
If Cy-Falls cannot find a way to stop him, it is going to be a long, hard drive back to Houston.

Cougars Take 7th at Miami (Ohio) Swimming Invitational

University of Houston senior captain Szintia Szanto posted a time of 2:19.24 to win the 200-yard breaststroke Saturday during the final day of the Miami (Ohio) Invitational at Corwin Nixon Natatorium.
Szanto was not the only Cougar swimmer to perform well Saturday. Sophomore Andrea Pa'lmai finished third in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:03.93, while sophomore Lauren VanCleave earned a third-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 56.67.
The Cougars finished seventh of 11 teams after scoring 714.5 points during the three-day meet. Host Miami (Ohio) won the meet with 1873.5 points, while Truman State was second with 1452.5 points. Denison (1,200), Oakland (1,159.5), Cincinnati (1,044) and Emory (821) rounded out the Top Six team leaders.

Greatest Moment in Sport: USA-USSR Hockey at 1980 Winter Olympic Games
| By Robert H. Kelly This is without a doubt, the greatest moment in USA Olympic history, if not the entire world of sport. Of course I am talking about the USA defeating the USSR in hockey at the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid. Many will disagree, and they are entitled to their opinion, but in this writer's mind, it was the great moment in the history of sport. Of couse, I was not there. I WAS watching it on TV. Not even I thought such a feat could happen. It just goes to show if you want it bad enough, and you believe in miracles..they can happen. What a time. The Olympics as they should ALWAYS be!!! (Grapevine, Texas) – More than 450 judo players are expected to compete on Saturday at the Dallas Invitational Judo Championships, a Senior Elite domestic tournament and one of the longest-running events in the United States.
The tournament is being held at the Hilton DFW Lakes in Grapevine, 1800 Hwy 26 East, and will begin at 8:30 a.m. with finals being held at 7 p.m.

The Mustangs finished third in the loaded field, while the Houston divers notched 100 points.
East Carolina took seventh in the prestigious Nike Cup, while Marshall claimed second at the Western Kentucky Invite. Rice was also strong at the Indiana Invitational where no team scores were kept.

Conference USA: Womens Basketball Weekly Update
Conference USA has eight teams in action Friday night including an undefeted SMU (3-0). The Mustangs are set to host its two-day Hoops For The Cure Classic that features San Jose State, Bradley and Wisconsin-Milwaukee inside Moody Coliseum in Dallas, Texas. Tulsa and UCF will also be in action against top 15 programs in No. 9 LSU and No. 15 Baylor, respectively.

Cougars Win 4 of 5 Meets at Phill Hansel Duals Weekend

Sophomore Andrea Pa'lmai collected wins in the 200-yard backstroke and the 400-yard individual medley to lead the University of Houston swimming and diving team during the second day of the Phill Hansel Duals Weekend at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center Natatorium.
The Cougars rallied on the final day of the 19-event, six-team meet to win four of five dual meets. The Cougars posted wins over Conference USA rival Rice (176-171), Mesa State (297-37), Trinity (281.50-66.50) and New Orleans (262-85) with only a loss to Nevada (203-150).
It was the Cougars' first win over Rice since a 147-118 decision to open the dual-meet season on Oct. 16, 1992.
With four dual meet wins this weekend, the Cougars also improved to 9-2 overall. That total tied the UH single-season record for dual-meet wins, equaling the mark set by the 2005-06 and the 2003-04 teams.
Pa'lmai finished first in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:04.72, more than two seconds ahead of her closest competitor. The Budapest, Hungary, native added a similar finish in the 400-yard individual medley with a clocking of 4:27.57.
Senior captain Szintia Szanto finished first in the 200-yard butterfly with a clocking of 2:02.61, nearly a second faster than her closest competitor. The Budapest, Hungary, native also finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Sophomore Anastasia Pozdniakova, the reigning C-USA Freshman Diver of the Year, won the 1-meter competition with 336.90 points. The winner of the 3-meter event on Friday, the Elektrostal, Russia, native was the only diver to crack 300 points in either event.
Sophomore Sasha Schwendenwein captured first place in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:59.04.
The Cougars' 400-yard medley relay team of Pa'lmai, Szanto, Lauren Van Cleave and Jessica Shamburger finished second with a time of 3:55.51.
The Cougar Diving team returns to action when they compete at the Art Adamson Invitational next weekend in College Station, Texas. The Swimming team returns to the competitive waters at the Miami (Ohio) Invitational on Nov. 30-Dec. 2 in Oxford, Ohio.
The Cougars won't return to the friendly waters of the CRWC Natatorium until Jan. 12-13 when they play host to North Texas, New Mexico State and Florida International in a two-day meet.
Houston Leads Three Teams at Phill Hansel Duals Weekend

Sophomore diver Anastasia Pozdniakova and sophomore swimmer Andrea Pa'lmai each posted first-place finishes to lead the University of Houston Swimming and Diving team Friday evening during the first day of the Phill Hansel Duals Weekend at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center Natatorium.
In the six-team, two-day, 19-event meet, the Cougars grabbed big leads over Mesa State (155-21), Trinity (147.50-35.50) and New Orleans (134-49) but were trailing Conference USA rival Rice (93-90) and Nevada (109-77).
Pa'lmai captured first place in the 1,0000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:07.44, the fifth-fastest time in school history. Pozdniakova, the defending C-USA Freshman Diver of the Year and the reigning C-USA Diver of the Week, enjoyed a first-place showing with 377.55 points on the 3-meter springboard, more than 80 points ahead of her closest competitor.
The meet is named in honor of former UH swimming and diving head coach Phill Hansel. Hansel, considered the Father of Cougar Swimming and Diving, led the Cougars from 1975 to 1996, racking up 70 dual-meet victories, a school record that still stands. Hansel, a 1949 graduate of Purdue, was named the Southwest Conference Coach of the Year three times during his tenure, and mentored 31 swimmers to All-America honors, including Diane Johannigman, the first NCAA swimming national champion in UH history.
Hansel also had an impressive resume at the international level, serving as the manager of the 1992 U.S. Olympics teams and working with the Singapore teams at the 1984 and 1988 Olympics.
Senior captain Szintia Szanto finished second in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:17.80 and added a similar finish in the 200-yard individual medley with a clocking of 2:04.53.
Sophomore Sasha Schwendenwein finished second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:51.22, while sophomore Jessica Shamburger earned a second-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.97.
Sophomore Lauren Van Cleave finished third in the 100-yard butterfly.
The Cougars' 200-yard medley relay team of Shamburger, Szanto, VanCleave and Schwendenwein started the day with a third-place finish.

Two UH Swimmers Honored By USA Swimming
By Chris PriceUniversity of Houston freshmen swimmers Kristine Kelly and Linda Fox were recently named to the USA Swimming Scholastic All American Team by USA Swimming.
Kelly and Fox were honored for their scholastic and academic achievements, and were named to the elite squad for the third year in a row.
USA Swimming honors swimmers who maintain a 3.75
grade point average and compete at the national level swimming competition during their high school years.Kelly competed for the Houston Cougar Aquatic Sports while Fox competed for the Houston Swim Club.
Both swimmers maintained their high GPAs and competed in both the SPEEDO Champions Series Short Course and Long Course Championships to qualify to receive the honors.

Wings Over Houston Airshow Scheduled for October 21-22
The 2006 edition of the Wings Over Houston Airshow is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, October 21-22 at Houston’s Ellington Field.
This year’s show will include the United States Air Force Thunderbirds, performing their close flying formations, tight turns and solo head-on flying.
Gates will open from 8 am to 6pm on Saturday and from 8 am to 5 pm on Sunday. Aerial performances will begin daily at 10 am.

Two More Longhorn Football Players Arrested

For the second time in four months, Longhorn football players have been arrested and jailed for actions off the football field.
Early Monday, cornerback Tarell Brown and defensive back Tyrell Gatewood, along with former player Aaron Harris were stopped while driving on Interstate 35 about 2:50am.
A deputy pulled the group over after watching the car weaving erratically and coming close to hitting another car.
Brown was charged with unlawfully carrying a weapon, a loaded 9 mm handgun, and with possession of less than 2 ounces of marijuana. Gatewood and Harris were charged with the same drug misdemeanor.
The weapons charge is a Class A misdemeanor with maximum punishment of one year in jail and a $4,000 fine. The marijuana charge, which was for less than two ounces, is a Class B misdemeanor, punishable by up to 180 days in jail and a $2,000 fine.
Coach Mack Brown said he met with both players and was "holding them out of all team functions as we gather as much information as possible before making a team decision."
This past May, former running back Ramonce Taylor was arrested in Bell County on the charge of possession of marijuana. He had already been dropped from the team for “academic reasons” at the time of arrest and is currently awaiting trial.

LaMarque Bests Nederland 28-20 at Reliant Stadium

La Marque High School came to Reliant Stadium to show their fans that they were deserving of a number 10 ranking in a Texas Football Magazine poll.
It took them a while to get started, but showed they were deserving of the ranking and perhaps much more.
The Cougars came back hard and heavy in the second half to kicked off the 2006 football season with a 28-20 win over Nederland.
Nederland senior running back Micah Mosley, on the second play from scrimmage, took the ball up the middle for a 68-yard touchdown run to give the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead just 64 seconds into the game.
La Marque came back quickly on their first offensive possession, effect ively driving downfield to cut the lead to 7-6. The Cougars drive lasted 4:29 for 60 yards in 12 plays.
Mosley took off on another big run for the Bulldogs, streaking down the right sideline for a 57-yard touchdown, taking the score to 14-6 with 3:23 to go in the quarter.
The second quarter saw La Marque quarterback Durklyn Haynes find receiver Joseph Florence with a 12-yard touchdown pass. Haynes then followed up with a two-point conversion to Shane Cams even the score at 14-14 at the half.
La Marque continued its offensive assault in the second half with a 54-yard touchdown by Marcus Frank on the second play.
The Bulldogs then drove 57 yards downfield in five plays, scoring on a 27-yard touchdown pass from Alex Moshier to Josh Cabra. The extra point attempt failed, leaving La Marque with a 21-20 lead.
The Cougars took scored a final time in the fourth quarter on a six-play, 76-yard drive that saw Haynes complete a 32-yard touchdown pass from Durklyn to Cams, giving La Marque a 28-20 victory.
