BAYLOR BASEBALL TOPS TEXAS STATE 7-2
WACO, TEXAS (May 14, 2008) Baylor erased a two-run deficit with a four-run fifth, and Randall Linebaugh recorded a season-high seven strikeouts as the Bears defeated Texas State 7-2 in midweek action Tuesday night at Baylor Ballpark. The Bears (29-20) improved to 20-10 at home this season; Baylor has recorded at least 20 home wins in each of Baylor Ballpark’s 10 seasons. Texas State (27-24) has lost nine straight games against the Bears.
Aaron Fuller staked Texas State to an early lead with a two-run homer to right-center in the second. However, that was all the offense the Bobcats would produce on the night as Linebaugh and reliever Craig Fritsch held Texas State to only four base-runners – all singles – the rest of the way.
Raynor Campbell led off the fifth with his second single of the game and moved to second on a wild pitch. After Paul Miles walked and Gregg Glime was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Shaver Hansen tied the game with a one-out, two-run single through the right side. Beamer Weems followed with a sacrifice fly, scoring Glime and giving the Bears a 3-2 lead they would never relinquish. Dustin Dickerson capped the inning with a two-out single, scoring Hansen.
Paul Goldschmidt singled to open the top of the sixth, but Linebaugh quickly quelled the rally with a double-play ball off the bat of Lance Loftin. Linebaugh then got Ben Theriot to ground out, ending the inning and his night.
In his first start of the season after 14 relief appearances, Linebaugh (1-0) allowed two runs on six hits and one walk over a season-high 6.0 innings. His seven strikeouts were the most he had recorded since a career-high eight against Dallas Baptist in 2006. TCU WOMEN'S TENNIS GARNERS ITA REGIONAL AWARDS
FORT WORTH, TEXAS (May 13, 2008) TCU women’s tennis sophomore Nina Munch-Soegaard was named the ITA Player to Watch, while Colin Foster was named the ITA Assistant Coach of the Year for the Southwest Region on Monday. The Horned Frogs wrapped up the season over the weekend in the NCAA Regionals.
Munch-Soegaard, a native of Amarillo, Texas, posted a 16-8 record this spring at the top singles position, and an overall mark of 26-11 during the 2007-08 season. Munch-Soegaard is currently ranked No. 60 nationally, and defeated nine ranked opponents this season. The ITA regional award is the latest accolade for Munch-Soegaard this season, who also earned all-conference singles honors and was named the Tennis Athlete of the Year by the Texas Panhandle Sports Hall of Fame in January. Munch-Soegaard is the first alternate for singles play at the NCAA Individual Championships.

TCU went undefeated in conference play to claim the Mountain West Conference regular season title, and reached the finals at the conference tournament. The Western Springs, Ill., native is in his second year at TCU and starred for four years at Purdue University.

Dynamo Game Against Toronto Rescheduled
HOUSTON, TEXAS (May 12, 2008) - The MLS regular-season game between the Houston Dynamo and Toronto FC has been rescheduled from Saturday, June 7 to Sunday, June 8, it was announced today.
Kickoff for this game is still set for 7:30 p.m. CT (Radio: 790 AM and 850 AM; TV: Channel 55, Channel 43). The date for this contest was changed because of a scheduling conflict with the University of Houston. The team will honor all tickets previously distributed for this game featuring the original date.
The Houston Dynamo will play its next three contests on the road against the Chicago Fire (Saturday, May 17), San Jose Earthquakes (Thursday, May 22), and FC Dallas (Wednesday, May 28). The Men in Orange will next play at home on Saturday, May 31 against Red Bull New York.

Houston Marathon Announces Date, Fees For 2009 Race
HOUSTON, TEXAS (May 11, 2008) It has been announce that the 37th running of the Chevron Houston Marathon, Aramco Houston Half Marathon, EP5K and ABB Team Challenge will be held on Sunday, January 18, 2009.

In addition, Marathon officials have also announced that registration fees in both the Chevron Houston Marathon and Aramco Houston Half Marathon will increase by $10 this Friday, May 16.
The marathon and half marathon will host a combined field of 18,000 total entrants, an increase of 1,000 over the 2008 event. Registration for the races will close once the cap is reached. As of May 11, close to 40% of the cap had been filled.

TULSA UPSETS TCU IN NCAA OPENING ROUND
WACO, TEXAS (May 10, 2008) The 26th-ranked TCU women’s tennis team fell to No. 40 Tulsa by a score of 4-3 on Friday in the opening round of the NCAA Regionals at the Baylor Tennis Center in Waco, Texas. The Horned Frogs ended the 2008 season with a 20-6 overall record.
“Tulsa played a really nice match,” said TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond. “They handled the heat a little better than we did and really competed well. We had a really nice season and this was a tough way for it to end, but I’m proud of the girls and how they competed. We’re looking forward to the NCAA Individual
Championships.”
The TCU duo of Maria Babanova and Nina Munch-Soegaard led off doubles play with
an 8-3 victory over Rebecca Rowe and Jie Zeng at the No. 3 position, but the
Frogs would drop contests at the top two positions to trail 1-0 early in the
match.
Munch-Soegaard, ranked No. 60 nationally, began singles play with a 6-2, 7-5 win
over No. 98 Alexandra Kichoutkin at the top spot. The win was Munch-Soegaard’s
ninth over a ranked opponent in 2007-08, and only the third loss for Kichoutkin
this spring.
Katariina Tuohimaa followed with a 6-0, 7-6(3) victory over Carla Zabeleta at

NO. 24 RICE OUTLASTS TCU IN OPENING ROUND
AUSTIN, TEXAS (May 9, 2008) The 34th-ranked TCU men’s tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to No. 24 Rice in a match that took nearly five hours to complete on Friday at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center in Austin, Texas. The loss ended the Horned Frogs’ season, finishing with a 20-8 overall record.
“We played really well today,” said TCU head coach Dave Borelli. “We had our chances in doubles and couldn’t take advantage of them. We played really well in singles, and I think Rice was just the better team. The guys left it all out on the court today and I’m really proud of them.”
Rice began play with victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles positions to take the 1-0 lead. The TCU duo of Cosmin Cotet and Adrian Simon posted the only win for the Frogs, defeating Chong Wang and Tobias Scheil at the No. 2 spot by a score of 8-3.
The Owls took a 2-0 lead in the match after a retirement at the No. 3 singles position. The Frogs answered back, as Simon posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory at the No. 5 slot over Filip Zivojinovic.
Cotet, ranked No. 39 nationally, evened the match with a 7-6(5), 6-0 victory over No. 14 Bruno Rosa at the top spot. The win was Cotet’s 13th in the 2007-08 season over a ranked opponent, and the third against a player ranked in the top 20.
Freshman Zach Nichols put TCU ahead 3-2 with a 6-4, 7-6(3) win over Wong at the No. 4slot. The victory pushed Nichols’ record to 22-5 in his first collegiate season.

Niko Niko's to Host World Gyro Eating Championship

On May 17, the nation's finest eating-athletes will meet in Houston, for the Niko Niko's World Gyro Eating Championship. This event, although in its 4th year, is proud to now be associated with the IFOCE and Major League Eating. The World Gyro Eating Championship is part of the Festival of Greece. UT Austin Selected as NCAA Regional Volleyball Site for 2008

INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA (March 7, 2008) The NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Committee announced today that The University of Texas at Austin will be one of the four regional sites for the 2008 Division I Women’s Volleyball Championships.
The tournament will be held in historic Gergory Gymnasium on the UT campus. Gerogry Gym has a notable history as a sporting facility.
Gregory Gymnasium, built in 1930 at an approximate cost of $500,000, was at its onset one of the pioneering projects for the advancement of The University of Texas campus. The proposal for a new modern gymnasium came about in 1907 by Thomas Watt Gregory, the first ex-student appointed to the Board of Regents. Called upon to raise $50,000 by University President David Franklin Houston, Gregory waged a one-man fund-raising campaign with a goal of raising $75,000. In one year alone, he collected an estimated $29,000. Gregory continued his efforts until 1914, when he was appointed Attorney General of the United States under President Woodrow Wilson. In the interim, two individuals – H. Y. Benedict and John A. Lomax, Secretary of the Ex-Students' Association - took over and invested the funds raised thus far. By the time Gregory returned to Texas, the sum had grown to $75,000.
The three other 2008 regional sites include: Moby Arena on the campus of Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado; Rec Hall at Pennsylvania State University in University Park, Pennsylvania; and Bank of America Arena at the University of Washington in Seattle. All competition will be played December 12-13.
In 2009, the four regional sites will be the Stephen C. O’Connell Center at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida; Sports Pavilion at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities in Minneapolis; Qwest Center Omaha with the University of Nebraska, Lincoln serving as host; and Maples Pavilion at Stanford University in Stanford, California. All competition will be played December 11-12.
“When we were selecting these sites we really wanted to focus on attendance history and attendance potential,” said Marie Robbins, the chair of the NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Committee. “We believe these sites provide a regional balance that can also draw great crowds. They have proven to be great hosts in the past, and we know they will step up to the plate in hosting these regionals so we can continue to grow this championship.”
Previously announced, the finals site for the Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship in 2008 is the Qwest Center Omaha on December 18 and 20, and in 2009 the competition will be held at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa, Fla. on December 17 and 19.

More Than 18000 Tickets Sold for Belize-Mexico World Cup Qualifier
HOUSTON, TEXAS (May 7, 2008) Lone Star Sports & Entertainment (LSSE) announced that 18,304 tickets have already been sold for the Belize vs. Mexico World Cup qualifying match after the first day of sales to the general public.
That sales figure far outpaces the Day One sales figures for all but one soccer match played at Reliant Stadium. Only February’s international friendly match between the United States and Mexico sold more tickets on the first day of availability to the general public. 20,945 tickets were sold on day one for that match.
The first-day sales figure for this match exceeds the number of tickets sold for the 2006 FC Barcelona United States tour and the 2005 and 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup matches, all of which were double headers. Both of those events, along with the United States vs. México match earlier this year, sold out before match day.
“We are off to an outstanding start. Fans are excited about the match and the response has been tremendous,” said LSSE director David Brady. “The fact that we have sold so many tickets this quickly is a testament to the magnitude of this match and is further evidence of what a truly world-class soccer market that Houston has become.”

UH To Host C-USA Softball Tournament
HOUSTON, TEXAS (May 6, 2008) Houston will play host to the 2008 Conference USA Softball Tournament May 8-10 at Cougar Softball Stadium. The first day of the tournament will feature five games beginning at 9 a.m. There will be two semifinal games at 2 p.m. on Friday. The Championship game is slated for 1:30 p.m. on Saturday and will air on CBS College Sports Network.
The Cougars enter the tournament as the leagues top seed and will play at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. They will play the winner of the UAB vs. Memphis game, which is scheduled for a 9 a.m. start.

The Bay Area Toros have announce that Sunday May 18, 2008 will be it's Annual Professional Baseball Fan Fest. The events will br from 1:00-4:00pm at Robinson Stadium in Texas City.
The events will be free for the entire family and will include giveaways from Toro's sponsors, an information session, "Baseball 101 for the Ladies" at 2:00pm.
In addition, children will receive free clinic instruction in all areas of the game.
There will be free hot dogs to the first 200 through gates and free ice cream for kids
Fans will also be able to meet the Toros players, take pictures, and take batting practice.
The Toros kick off their 2008 season with Opening Day at home on May 23 versus the Corpus Christi BeachDawgs. Game time is 6:35pm.

NCAA to Crown Six Champions in Houston During National Championship Festival
INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA (May 6, 2008) More than 800 NCAA Division II student-athletes will compete for six national championships when the NCAA, in conjunction with Rice University and the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority, hosts the 2008 NCAA Division II National Championships Festival, May 13-17, in Houston, Texas.
The festival, which is structured similar to an Olympic-type event, will feature 70 teams competing for NCAA titles in men’s and women’s golf; men’s and women’s tennis; women’s lacrosse and softball in one geographical location.
This is the third national championships festival hosted by Division II, which is the first and only NCAA division to host a multiple championships festival. Division II held its first festival in spring 2004 in Orlando, Fla., and conducted a fall-sports festival in November 2006 in Pensacola, Fla. In addition to the 2008 festival in Houston, the NCAA recently announced an inaugural winter-sports edition for 2009 – also in Houston – for March 11-14.
“The Division II National Championship Festival is an ideal example of how intercollegiate athletics can enhance the educational experience of student-athletes by building community – in this case across a number of sports platforms,” said NCAA president Myles Brand. “The festival is one of the jewels of the NCAA, specifically focused on Division II student-athletes, its colleges and universities. Everyone is looking forward to a great experience and most importantly, supporting the student-athletes.”
The goals of the Division II National Championships Festival are to enhance the student-athlete collegiate experience; create more awareness and exposure for Division II sports; and increase attendance by hosting multiple championships in one location.
“The festival not only portrays the best of Division II, but also it supports the greater mission of the Association,” said Stephen Jordan, president of Metropolitan State College of Denver and Division II Presidents Council chair. “We are investing in the education of student-athletes and the development of young adults into productive citizens and community members. The festival experience allows the student-athletes to participate in exciting competition and add to the rewarding experiences that make up their collegiate experiences.”
Student-athletes competing at the festival will have the opportunity to participate in opening and closing ceremonies, as well as attend other championships and support their peers while competing for titles in their own sport. There also will be social activities for the student-athletes at the end of each day’s competition. NCAA will also host a fan festival Wednesday through Saturday from 11 am to 7 pm, which is another unique aspect to the sports festival experience.
Houston’s Memorial Park, one of America’s largest urban park expanses, will be the location for each of the sporting competitions and student-athlete activities.
Many of the athletic competitions will be featured online via live coverage and highlight videos, as well as select championship broadcasts on CBS College Sports and regional syndication.
With Division II’s strong focus on community engagement as a pillar of its membership values, the festival will include several opportunities for student-athletes, athletics administrators and fans to participate in volunteer opportunities to benefit the Houston-area community.
NCAA Division II student-athletes, NCAA staff, Division II governance officials and local volunteers will join forces to build 10 Habitat for Humanity houses in partnership with families displaced by hurricanes in the Houston area. The Habitat builds in Houston will be the single largest to date in total number of homes built in one location through the NCAA’s partnership with Habitat. The builds will take place at Memorial Park and the Umland Park subdivision in South Houston throughout the four-day festival.
Other community activities include several opportunities to reach Houston-area youth and promote positive educational experiences. The NCAA will host youth sports clinics for more than 1,200 Houston-area elementary and middle school students. The clinics will be held at Memorial Park during the festival in conjunction with the Houston Independent School District (HISD) and the Houston Community Center.
Also in conjunction with HISD, the NCAA is offering Sporting Geography curriculum programs, which emphasize state requirements and guidelines for social studies and math education in grades four through eight. Nearly 70 Houston-area classrooms and more than 5,700 students have registered to participate in the program.
In addition, the NCAA will host Youth Lacrosse All Star Games that will include 80 middle school and high school student-athletes. All 80 participants will be recognized on the field during the halftime of the Division II lacrosse championship.

Division II is a group of institutions and conferences that serve more than 75,000 student-athletes nationwide, including in Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. The Division II approach provides growth opportunities through academic achievement, learning in high-level athletic competition and the development of societal attitudes in service to the community. The balance and integration of these different areas of learning provide Division II student-athletes with a path to graduation while cultivating a variety of skills and knowledge for life ahead.

BAYLOR BASEBALL EDGED AT TEXAS 2-0
WACO, TEXAS (May 5, 2008) Texas posted solo spots in the second and third innings, and two Longhorn pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout as Texas edged Baylor 2-0 in Sunday's Big 12 Conference series finale at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The Bears (28-22, 10-14) have lost three straight Big 12 series. The Longhorns (29-19, 12-12) won the series two games to one, taking the series against Baylor for the third straight season.
Russell Moldenhauer walked to open the second and reached second when Baylor starter Craig Fritsch mishandled a bunt. Brandon Belt followed with an RBI single through the right side. Travis Tucker was hit by a pitch to lead off the third, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on Moldenhauer's two-out double past a diving Ben Booker down the left-field line.
That was all the offense on the day as both pitching staffs kept the bats at bay the rest of the way. Texas starter Kenn Kasparek (4-3) tossed 8.0 scoreless innings on three hits, a walk and a hit batsman with nine strikeouts for the win. Cole Green gave up a one-out single to Adam Hornung in the ninth but escaped unscathed for his third save.
Fritsch (3-3) took the loss, allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits, two walks and a hit batsman with four strikeouts over 5.0 innings. Mace Thurman and Willie Kempf closed out the game, each allowing one hit with three strikeouts and two strikeouts, respectively.

BAYLOR BASEBALL TOPS TEXAS 6-1
AUSTIN, TEXAS (May 4, 2008) Adam Hornung and Ben Booker homered in a four-run seventh as Baylor defeated Texas 6-1 in Big 12 Conference action Saturday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The Bears (28-21, 10-13) snapped an 11-game losing streak in the series, defeating the Longhorns (28-19, 11-12) for the first time since the 2005 Big 12 Tournament.
After managing only four base runners in the game's first six innings, Baylor
batted around in the seventh. Hornung led off the inning with his sixth homer of
the year, breaking a scoreless tie. Three batters and one out later, Booker
blasted a two-run shot down the line in right that cleared the Longhorns'
bullpen beyond the outfield wall. Paul Miles, Gregg Glime and Shaver Hansen then walked to load the bases, and Beamer Weems pushed the Bears' lead to 4-0.

After working just 2.2 innings against Texas A&M two weeks ago and failing to
get out the first inning last Saturday against Nebraska, Tolleson tossed a
career-high 131 pitches, working into the eighth inning for the fourth time in
eight Big 12 starts this season.
Texas did not get to Tolleson until the eighth. Russell Moldenhauer and Brandon
Belt opened the inning with back-to-back singles, and Preston Clark followed
with a walk to load the bases. Shepherd's sacrifice fly pushed Tolleson from the
game, but Willie Kempf got consecutive ground-ball outs to get the Bears out of
the jam. Kempf then retired the side in order in the ninth for his first save of

JUDO: Cuban Delegation Arrives in Miami on Monday for 2008 Pan American Championships
COLORADO SPRINGS, COLORADO (May 3, 2008) Twenty-two members of the Cuban delegation will be arriving at the Miami International Airport at 2:30 p.m. via Panama on Monday May 5 to participate in the Pan American Championships and Olympic Zone Cup, May 8-11.
The team includes four current or former World Champions, will be competing in the event which is the final qualifier for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
“These Pan American Judo Championships will be one of the most important international events ever held in our country due to the presence of world powers Cuba and Brazil plus great judokas from Venezuela, Ecuador, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Canada, Mexico and, of course, our own USA athletes,” said USA Judo CEO Jose H. Rodriguez (Colorado Springs, Colo.). “This will be a unique opportunity for those who love Olympic sports and contact sport to come out and see some of the world’s best athletes compete for an Olympic berth. Obviously the presence of a full team from Cuba adds a special flavor to this event. This is indeed a historic event for our nation and the South Florida community.”

BAYLOR BASEBALL FALLS TO TEXAS 12-1
WACO, TEXAS (May 3, 2008) Texas batted around in a four-run fifth, breaking open a close game en route to a 12-1 victory over Baylor in Friday night’s Big 12 Conference opener at Baylor Ballpark. The Bears (27-21, 9-13) fall to 1-7 in Big 12 series openers and have dropped each of their last four such games. The Longhorns (28-18, 11-11) have won 11 consecutive meetings.
While Texas took control of the game in the fifth, the game turned in the top of the fourth. After recording seven strikeouts over the first three innings, Baylor starter Kendal Volz was forced to leave the game with a strained oblique muscle. Volz, who gave up a two-out RBI hit to David Hernandez in the second, left the game with Baylor trailing and was saddled with the loss.
Preston Clark’s one-out RBI single in the fourth pushed the Longhorns’ lead to 2-0. In the fifth, six consecutive Texas batters reached base safely with two outs.
Baylor managed a run in the bottom of the inning on two hits and a Longhorn error. Gregg Glime singled with one out and moved to third when Texas catcher Cameron Rupp’s pickoff attempt skipped down the right-field line. Beamer Weems followed with an RBI single.
However, that was all the offense on the night for the Bears, who did not collect more than one hit in any other inning. Chance Ruffin allowed the one unearned run on seven hits and two walks with 11 strikeouts for the complete-game victory. Ruffin used 150 pitches on the night, 50 of which came in the game’s final three innings.
Texas added three runs in the seventh, a run in the eighth and two in the ninth. The Horns 16-hit attack was paced by four players with three hits each – Brandon Belt, Clark, Jordan Danks and Hernandez.
Weems and Shaver Hansen were both 2-for-4, turning in Baylor’s only multiple-hit games.
The series now shifts to Austin’s UFCU Disch-Falk Field for the final two games of the series, beginning with Saturday’s 2:30 p.m. CDT game that will be televised nationally on FSN. Baylor to Face Texas in Baseball Action

BAYLOR BASEBALL RUN-RULES SAM HOUSTON STATE 14-4
WACO, TEXAS (May 1, 2008) Shaver Hansen was 4-for-5 with three doubles and four RBI, while Raynor Campbell and Beamer Weems both homered as Baylor defeated Sam Houston State 14-4 in eight innings Wednesday night at Baylor Ballpark. The Bears (27-20) have won three straight games, out-scoring their opponents 36-11 in those three games.
Sam Houston State (27-19) opened the game with four consecutive extra-base hits, chasing Baylor starter Wade Mackey from the game after only 10 pitches. Todd Sebek doubled, and Keith Stein followed with his eighth home run of the season. Bobby Verbick and Seth Hammock, who spent his first two collegiate seasons at Baylor, doubled consecutively to put runners at second and third with no outs.
However, Craig Fritsch spelled Mackey and struck out the next three batters to get out of the jam. Fritsch was dominant the rest of the way, allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits and no walks with 10 strikeouts. The strikeout total was a career high and a Baylor Ballpark record for strikeouts in relief.
Baylor was quick to answer Sam Houston State’s two-run first as the Bears scored three runs on three doubles and a Bearkat error in the bottom of the inning. Hansen doubled to open the frame, moved to second on Weems’ sacrifice bunt and scored on Dustin Dickerson’s groundout. Adam Hornung then reached on an error, and Aaron Miller and Campbell followed with consecutive doubles to give the Bears a 3-2 lead.
After Sam Houston State got an unearned run in the top of the second, Campbell blasted a three-run homer in the bottom of the third to put the Bears back in the lead at 6-3. Baylor never trailed again.
Weems blasted a two-run homer in the fourth to push Baylor’s lead to 8-3. Verbick led off the fifth with a triple and scored on Hammock’s sacrifice fly, but that was the last offense on the night for the Bearkats. Sebek’s bunt single in the seventh was Sam Houston State’s only hit after Sebek’s fifth-inning triple. Fritsch retired the final 10 batters he faced before giving way to Erik Forestiere, who pitched a perfect eighth.
