FORT WORTH, TEXAS (February 13, 2009) The TCU men's tennis team heads to Norman, Okla., Saturday, to face Oklahoma at 2 p.m. The match will be the first inside OU’s new Gregg Wadley Indoor Tennis Pavilion.
TCU, currently ranked 34th in the ITA’s national team ratings, enters the weekend with a 1-2 record after facing three teams that at the time were ranked among the nation’s top-28 squads. The Horned Frogs opened the season with a 4-1 loss at No. 24 Rice before going 1-1 two weekends ago at the National Indoor Team Regional in Austin. The squad opened the tournament with a 4-1 victory over No. 28 South Florida, then dropped a hard-fought 4-1 decision to No. 2 Texas.
Three Frogs remain in the individual rankings, which have not been updated since the beginning of spring play: sophomore Emanuel Brighui (No. 93), senior Kriegler Brink (No. 97) and junior Adrian Simon (No. 110). Simon and Brighiu also team up to form the nation’s 12th-rated doubles pairing.
Brink hopes to continue the strong early play that has helped him start the spring 3-0 in singles, with each victory coming in straight sets.
Oklahoma, 2-2 this season, was ranked 72nd in Feb. 10 release of the national rankings. Three Sooners appear in the current list of the ITA individual ratings: No. 44 Andrei Daescu, No. 77 Sergey Avdeyev and No. 122 Ionut Beleleu. The squad opened the spring with easy 7-0 wins over UT Pan Am and Oral Roberts before dropping its latest matches to Washington (6-1) and Boise State (4-3) in Seattle.
The Frogs and Sooners have previously met 11 times, with TCU taking nine of those matchups, including last season’s 4-3 victory in Fort Worth. Overall, the Frogs have won four straight matches against OU.
