71 Tuesday leads to Brown finishing as individual runner-up
HOUSTON, TEXAS (February 17, 2009) Led by Patrick Kucich’s two-under par 70, Pacific shot an even 288 team score Tuesday to beat the host Owls by four strokes at the 9th Annual Rice Intercollegiate presented by Srixon.
Pacific shot a three-round score of 874 (296-290-288). Rice, which was tied for fifth after two rounds, failed to make up any ground on the Tigers Tuesday also finishing with an even-par 288 team score. The Owls carded an 878 (296-294-288) for the tournament played at Westwood Golf Club.
San Francisco’s Ji Hwan Park shot even par Tuesday and finished with a three-round score of 210 (-6) to win the team title by three strokes over Rice junior Christopher Brown. Brown shot a 71 Tuesday to finish with a three-round score of 213 (-3).
Second-round leader Ben Moser of Houston shot a 79 Tuesday and tied for third individually with an even par 216. Joining Moser in a tie for third was Kucich and Liberty’s Robert Karlsson who helped lead the Flames to a third-place. Liberty finished four strokes back of Rice with an 882.
Houston, which had a 15-stroke lead after two rounds, fell to fourth in the final standings. The Cougars shot a 308 Tuesday to finish with a three-round score of 883.
In addition to Brown, Rice had two other players finish in the Top 15. Rice sophomore Robert Burrow shot a one-over par 73 to finish with a three-round score of 219 (+3) and tie for ninth. Senior Kyle Kelley rebounded from Monday’s 75-76 to card a three-under par 69 Tuesday and finish in a tie for 13th with a 220 (+4).
Rice returns to action March 9-10 when it travels to Lafayette, La., for the Louisiana Classics at Oakbourne Country Club.
