HBU Huskies close out regular season with 3-1 win over Southeastern Louisiana

HOUSTON, TEXAS (November 11, 2017)  The Houston Baptist University Huskies closed out the regular volleyball season with a 3-1 win over Southeastern Louisiana at Sharp Gymnasium on Saturday. The Huskies dropped the first set 25-22, but rebounded to take the next three by the scores of 25-15, 25-21, 25-9. 

HBU was led by senior middle blocker Blair Gillard (La Grange, Texas) with 15.5 points while tallying 11 kills. Senior outside hitter Bailey Banks  (Missouri City, Texas)  added 14.5 points and 12 kills with senior outside hitter Jessica Wooten (Humble, Texas) contributed 14 points and 13 kills

For the Lady Lions, freshman middle blocker Sam Gomez (Manderville, Louisville) scored 13.5 points and had 10 kills with sophomore outside hitter Chloee Holden (Alvin, Texas) and sophomore Elyssa Purcell both scoring 10 points. Also, junior Lexie Torres (San Antonio, Texas) had 15 digs.

The Huskies will next play in the Southland Conference Volleyball Tournament on November 17-19 at the Dugan Wellness Center in Corpus Christi, against a yet undetermined opponent.

HBU downs Northwestern State Lady Demons 3-1; qualifies for SLC Volleyball Tourney

HOUSTON, TEXAS (November 4, 2017) The Houston Baptist University Huskies punched their ticket to the Southland Conference Volleyball Tournament with a 3-1 win over the Northwestern State Lady Demons at Sharp Gymnasium on Saturday. The Huskies won the first two sets; 25-21 and 25-19, before dropping the third set 15-25. They rallied in the fourth set, narrowly outscoring the Lady Demons 25-23 to take the match and their ninth conference win.

The Huskies were led by middle blocker Blair Gillard, who recorded 11 kills five digs, five blocks and three assists. Fellow senior Bailey Banks, who plays outside hitter, had seven digs and seven kills, to go along three assists and a block.

Next up for the Huskies is a Thursday, November 9 match up against New Orleans, followed by a Saturday, November 11 game versus Southeastern Louisiana to close out the regular season. HBU will kickoff the 2017 Southland Conference Tournament on Friday, November 17 against a yet undermined opponent. The Huskies currently stand in fourth place in conference play, behind SFA (13-2), Central Arkansas (12-2), and Sam Houston State (10-4).

The Southland Conference Tournament will be hosted by Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi at the Dugan Wellness Center. The first six matches will be streamed live on the Southland Digital Network with the championship game stream live on ESPN3. The winner of the Southland Conference Tournament will receive an automatic bod to the NCAA National Championship Tournament.

HBU Huskies down Abilene Christian Wildcats 3-1 in Southland volleyball action

HOUSTON, TEXAS (October 14, 2017) The HBU Huskies rallied from a one-all tie after two sets to down the Abilene Christian Wildcats by the score of 3-1 in Southland Conference volleyball after at Sharp Gymnasium in Houston on Saturday, October 14, 2017. The win pushed the Huskies to 7-2 in conference play and 15-6 for the season. HBU took the first set 25-18 with the Wildcats evening the score at one-all; taking the second set 25-22. The Huskies came back to claim the win, taking the third set 25-23 and the fourth set 25-22.

Junior setter Madison O'Brien (Cleveland, Texas, Tarkington High School) led the Huskies with 11 kills on 14 attempts (.714) with senior outside hitter Bailey Banks (Missouri City, Texas, Elkins High School) tallying five service aces and 21 digs. Senior defensive specialist Hailey Erickson (Richardson, Texas, Prince of Peace High School) also accounted for 21 digs.

The Huskies are currently third in Southland Conference standing (.778, 7-2); behind first place Sam Houston State (1.000, 7-0) and second Stephen F. Austin (.857, 6-1). Next up for HBU is a October 17 road  match against Northwestern State.

HBU Volleyball hosts Prairie View A&M Tuesday

HOUSTON, TEXAS (September 4, 2017)  HBU looks to remain undefeated when it faces Prairie View A&M in a non-conference volleyball match Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Sharp Gym. The Huskies will not play again at home for three-and-half weeks before the their Southland Conference home opener against Lamar on Sept. 28.

The video broadcast with Russ Reneau and former HBU setter Kayla Armer will be available on HBUHuskies.com.

Senior outside hitters Bailey Banks and Jessica Wooten lead the way for HBU (4-0), with Banks averaging 3.20 kills and 2.80 digs per set and Wooten averaging 2.93 kills and a team-leading 3.80 digs per set. The Huskies’ other three starting attackers – redshirt freshman right side Ashtyn Richey, senior middle blocker Blair Gillard and junior middle blocker Kayla Davenport – are each averaging more than two kills per set, with Gillard also posting 1.00 block per set. Freshman setter Abby Gargus paces the offense with 10.38 assists per set, while also chipping in with 2.31 digs per set. Senior libero Hailey Erickson anchors the back row with 3.79 digs per set.

PVAMU has yet to play a match this season after not traveling to North Texas for its season-opening tournament scheduled for Aug. 25 and 26 due to Hurricane Harvey, then postponing its home match against HBU last Tuesday.

The Huskies head to San Marcos for the Crests & Creeds Classic, where they will take on UMass Lowell in the opener at 11 a.m., followed by UTSA at 5 p.m. Friday. HBU then faces host Texas State in the finale Saturday at 5 p.m.

Houston Baptist Volleyball Drops 3-0 decision to UT-Arlington

ARLINGTON, TEXAS (September 13, 2014)  HBU senior outside hitter Megan McStravick recorded eight kills and eight digs for HBU in their 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 26-24) drop to UTA in the final match of the UT-Arlington Tournament Saturday afternoon.
 
Junior middle blocker Allison Doerpinghaus recorded a match-high of eight block assists for the Huskies. Sophomore setter Kayla Armer had 25 assists for HBU (4-6). Senior libero Haley Hoffman recorded 14 digs, while sophomore defensive specialist Beth Shecterle had 11 digs.
 
Qiana Canete led UTA with a double-double of 13 kills and 10 digs. Taylor Gross recorded 11 kills, along with seven block assists for the Mavericks. Amanda Welsh had 29 assists for UTA, while Cassidy Wheeler had 12. Caitlyn Cooney recorded a match-high of 19 digs, while Ashlynn Ford had 10 digs for the Mavericks.
 
The Mavericks outblocked the Huskies 12.5-9. UTA outhit HBU 49-33. The Huskies fell short by eight digs against the Mavericks.
 
The following are the All-Tournament selections from this weekend: Kali Fluke, TSU; Megan McStravick, HBU; Olivia Mesner, FGCU; Whitney Masters, FGCU; Qiana Canete, UTA; Taylor Gross, UTA; Briana Sharratt, UTA.
  
The Huskies return to action at home on Tuesday, Sept. 16 against Prairie View A&M in Sharp Gym.

HBU Volleyball Splits at UT-Arlington Tournament

ARLINGTON, TEXAS (September 12, 2014) HBU senior outside hitter Bailey Keith leads the Huskies with 15 kills against Texas Southern University at the UT-Arlington Tournament Friday evening at College Park Center.
 
The Huskies defeated TSU 3-0 (25-22, 25-14, 25-21) Friday evening. Keith led HBU (4-5) with a match-high of 15 kills and seven digs. Senior outside hitter Megan McStravick recorded nine kills and nine digs for the Huskies. Sophomore setter Kayla Armer had a match-high of 42 assists. Senior libero Haley Hoffman had 13 digs, while sophomore outside hitter Jessica Wooten had 10 digs for the Huskies.
 
Audriana Carson recorded 10 kills and 12 digs for the Tigers. Robyn Shannon had 10 kills for TSU. Sarah Wooten recorded 21 assists for the Tigers. Samone Boyd recorded a match-high of 14 digs for TSU, while Wooten recorded seven digs.
 
The Huskies outblocked the Tigers 7-4. HBU outhit TSU 47-35. The Tigers fell short of just 10 total digs to the Huskies.
 
The Huskies dropped 0-3 (25-17, 25-22, 25-20) to Florida Gulf Coast. Wooten led the Huskies with 13 kills, while junior Allison Doerpinghaus had six kills. Hoffman recorded a match-high of 15 digs for HBU, while McStravick recorded 11 digs. Armer had 27 assists for the Huskies, along with three block assists. Freshman middle blocker Blair Gillard had five kills for HBU.  
 
Jessica Barnes led the Eagles with a match-high of 15 kills. Vanessa Benke recorded 14 kills and 14 digs, while Elenora Kazarian had 10 kills for Florida Gulf Coast. Gigi Meyer had 47 assists for the Eagles. Courtney Stephens recorded 10 digs for FGCU.
 
The Eagles outblocked the Huskies 6-5. FGCU also outhit HBU 52-31. The Huskies fell short by just seven digs to the Eagles.
 
The Huskies return to action to conclude the UT-Arlington Tournament Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. against UT-Arlington.
