GCU Huskies fall to UTRGV in Southland opener, 27-7

EDINBURG, TEXAS (October 4, 2025) The HCU Huskies football team dropped its Southland Conference opener on Saturday night, falling 27-7 to UTRGV at Vackar Stadium. Despite the loss, running back Xai’Shaun Edwards (shown left) and wide receiver Deuce McMillan, both reached major milestones.

Edwards rushed for 101 yards and a touchdown, marking his second 100-yard game of the season. McMillan finished with four catches for 40 yards, surpassing 1,000 career receiving yards.

Both teams started slow on offense before UTRGV struck first late in the first quarter. The Huskies answered midway through the second quarter with a 17-play, 75-yard drive capped off by a one-yard touchdown run from Edwards to tie the game at 7-7.

HCU’s defense came up big in the first half with two interceptions—one from DJ Roberts and another from Norey Johnson—to keep the score even heading into halftime.

The Vaqueros regained momentum after the break, scoring on their opening drive of the second half to take a 14-7 lead. UTRGV extended the margin with a field goal early in the fourth quarter and sealed the game with another touchdown and field goal late.

On defense, Darius Bean and Rodney Dansby led HCU with seven tackles each. Bean added a sack, while Dansby continued his climb up the program’s all-time tackles list—he now has 392, just 23 shy of second place. Trent Zappe recorded six tackles, and Mike Sylvalie earned his first career sack.

Edwards now has six rushing touchdowns this season, the second-most in a single season in HCU history, just one behind the program record.

The Huskies (1-4, 0-1 SLC) return home next Saturday, Oct. 11, for Family Weekend at Husky Stadium. Kickoff against Northwestern State is set for 7 p.m.

San Antonio Commanders fall to Arizona Hotshots 23-6

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS (March 31, 2019) It was a hard Sunday night at the Alamodome for the San Antonio Commanders. With their offense unable to overcome the Arizona Hotshots defense, they dropped a 23-6 decision in front of 23,504 fans in the Alamo City. With the loss, and the Arizona win, both teams now post 5-3 records, with the Wildcats holding the advantage for the home field advantage in the playoffs. With two games to go in their inaugural Alliance of American Football season, the Commanders will have to win their final two games, with Arizona dropping one of the them to be able to have the fans in San Antonio witness the playoff game inside the Alamodome.

The game started off with the Hotshots scoring on their second possession of the game; a four-play, 80-yard drive that ended when John Wolford (below, number 7), connected with Radhad Ross on a 58-yard pass for the first touchdown of the game. The conversion attempt failed to put the score at 6-0 after 5:42 of play in the first quarter. They added three more points, with a Nick Folk 25-yard field goal at the 14:26 mark of the second quarter. The Hotshots capped another long drive for their second TD of the game with a six-yard run by Tim Cook, San Antonio responded with 47 seconds left in the half with a 54-yard field goal by Nick Rose. Both teams headed to the locker room at halftime with the Hotshots leading 15-3.

San Antonio took possession of the ball to start the second half; driving 58 yards in 11 plays to add three points to their total when Rose booted his second field goal of the night; a 35-yarder. The field goal was the only score on the third quarter, with Arizona taking a 15-6 lead into the final 15 minutes of play. The Hotshots added an insurance touchdown Cook scampered over right tackle for 20 yard and his second touchdown of the game. The conversion attempt, a pass from Wolford to Conner Hamlett, was successful, to close out scoring.

In week nine, San Antonio will host the 2-6 Memphis Express while Arizona will host the Birmingham Iron (5-3). The final week of the regular season will see the Commanders travelling to Salt Lake while Arizona will travel to San Diego to play the Fleet.

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS (March 23, 2019) With 1:54 remaining in the game, the Salt Lake Stallions trailed by two after their only touchdown of the night. Going for the two-point conversion, quarterback Josh Woodrum targeted wide receiver DeMoenay Pierson-El for the tie; with the pass picked off by San Antonio Commanders' De'Vante Bausby. The fleet footed corner back ran the ball back, scoring two points to seal the deal and give San Antonio a 19-15 win over Salt Lake at the Alamodome in San Antonio. The win pushes the Commanders to a 5-2 record, good enough for first place in the Western Conference of the Alliance of American Football.

In the first quarter, the Stallions got the ball past the goal line with a Taylor Bertolet 32-yard field goal at the 9:17 mark in the first quarter. They took possession of the ball to start the game; moving it 53 yards before the drive stalled; as they settled for three points. The Commanders responded four and a half minutes later with a 75-yard drive that ended when quarterback Logan Woodside (above right) with a 21-yard pass to wide receiver Mekale McKay for the first touchdown of the game. The conversion attempt failed when a Woodside pass to Greg Ward, Jr. was incomplete.

Salt Lake evened the score early in the second quarter when Bertolet booted a 53 yarder. After some back-and forth play, San Antonio got the ball back on a Woodrum interception by corner back Duke Thomas. He returned the ball 25 yards to the Commanders' 29-yard-line. Woodside the mounted a 65-yard drive that resulted in a 23-yard field goal by Nick Rose to make the score 9-6 at the half. Williams came off the bench after Woodside left the game with a shoulder injury. He engineered a nine-play, 70-yard drive; concluding with a 36-yard pass to running back Trey Williams (shown left) for the score. The successful conversion; a pass from Willians to Ward, Jr. pushed the Commanders total to 17.  

Salt Lake cut the San Antonio lead to two after their late touchdown, with the final score being posted after the interception on the conversion attempt.

Early in the first quarter, on a second-and-two play, quarterback Stallions' Josh Woodrum handed the ball to running back Terron Ward for the first down. On the play, Ward was stopped by linebackers Joel Lanning and Shaan Washington. Lanning injured his shoulder on the play and left the game. He was checked by team physicians and returned to the game in the third quarter.

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS (February 22, 2019) Kenneth Farrow II's (No. 20, shown left) participation is listed as "questionable" for Sunday when the San Antonio Commanders head to San Diego to take on the Fleet. Defensive lineman Matt Godin and linebacker Shaan Washington were listed as "out" on Friday for Sunday's game.

Farrow II was injured this past Saturday when San Antonio played the Orlando Apollos. The running back sustained a lower back injury and did not participate in Wednesday's practice. He saw limited participation on Thursday and participated fully in Friday's training session.n Godin, who is recovering from a head injury, and Washington (ankle injury) did not participate in practice on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday.

The Commanders will take on the Fleet in San Diego on Sunday in their first road trip of the season, with a scheduled start time of 7:04 p.m. CST.

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS (February 17, 2019) The San Antonio Commanders did not waste any time getting on the scoreboard, but the Orlando Apollos posted two touchdowns and one field goal in the fourth quarter to down San Antonio 37-29 in the Alamodome in San Antonio.

On their first possession, the Commanders drove the ball 59 yards in 10 plays; capping the drive with 15-yard run by Kenneth Farrow II (shown right) for the first touchdown of the game. On the play, Farrow II was injured on the play and left the field.

With two seconds remaining on the clock to end the first quarter, tight end Evan Rodriguez caught a one-yard pass from quarterback Logan Woodside for the score. The drive covered 72 yards in 14 plays and lasted 7:04; putting the score at 12-0 after 15 minutes. Both two-point conversion tries were unsuccessful

The Apollos answered early in the second quarter with a five-play, 75-yard drive that ended in a De'Veon Smith one-yard pass for the score. The tight end added the two-point conversion to make the score 12-8 with 12:56 remaining in the half. San Antonio added a 50-yard field goal, off the foot of Nick Rose to increase their lead to 15-8. Orlando came back two minutes later to boot their own 35-yard field goal, by Elliot Fry to cut the Commanders lead to four points (15-11). They added six points to their score with two minutes left in the half on a 21-yard pass from Garrett Gilbert to wide receiver Charles Johnson to make the score 17-15. San Antonio closed out the first half with Rose booting a 38-yard field goal to make the score 18-17 after 30 minutes of play.

In the third quarter, San Antonio added as Rose 37-yard field goal and a Joey Mbu fumble recovery for a touchdown and a successful conversion. Fry gave the Apollos another three points with a 24-yard field goal. The fourth quarter was all Orlando; scoring on a Fry 47-yard field goal, a touchdown on a 47-yard pass from Gilbert to Jalin Marshall, and an interception TD by Keith Reaser.

Next up for the 1-1 Commanders is a Sunday, February 24 match up against the San Diego Fleet. San Antonio downed the Fleet 15-6 on February 9.

Five former Houston Cougars on San Antonio Commanders roster

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS (January 26, 2019) The San Antonio Commanders competed their 19th day of training camp on Saturday. They currently have 52 players on the roster with five of those being former University of Houston players. The five include offensive guard Marcus Oliver , running back Kenneth Farrow II, wide receiver Demarcus Ayers, defensive tackle Joey Mbu, and corner back Nick Thurman.

The Commanders will compete their training camp on January 31, with the setting their 52-man roster on Wednesday January 30. They will kickoff the 2-019 season on February 9 against the San Diego Fleet at the Alamodome.

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS (January 25, 2019) The San Antonio Commanders have added wide receiver Alonzo Moore (shown right) to their active roster. Moore played his college football for the the Unversity  of Nebraska. He played 44 games for the Cornhuskers from 2013 to 2016. He caught 60 passes for 981 and eight toughdowns while carrying the ball 18 times for 164 yards rushing. He led the Big 10 Conference in 2016 with an average of 18.8 yards per catch. He was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Kansas City Chiefs in early 2017 and was waived later in the year during training camp.

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS (January 12, 2019)  The San Antonio Commanders have announced they have added former Houston Cougars standout Greg Ward, Jr. to their 2019 roster as a wide receiver. Ward, Jr. played in 49 career games at Houston as a wide receiver and quarterback. He amassed 11,080 yards and 93 total touchdowns at Houston and was the 2015 Earl Campbell Award winner. In addition, he was a member of the Super Bowl LII champion Philadelphia Eagles’ practice squad in 2017.

 Alamo Beer Company Will Brew A Seasonal Commanders Light and Commanders Amber 

 SAN ANTONIO (January 8, 2019)  The Alliance of American Football’s San Antonio Commanders have announced a partnership with San Antonio-based Alamo Beer Company. 

The partnership, which is the first between an Alliance of American Football team and a brewery, includes the production of two seasonal craft beers that will carry the Commanders’ name. Alamo Beer will brew, serve and distribute a Commanders Light and Commanders Amber during the first quarter of 2019. 

The two Commanders branded beers will be unveiled to the public for the first time on Thursday, January 10 at an event at Alamo Beer Company. The event, which begins at 7 p.m., will include appearances by Commanders’ general manager Daryl Johnston, head coach Mike Riley and several Commanders players. 

“When the opportunity to work with the Commanders presented itself, it was an obvious choice; what pairs better than beer and football?” said Eugene Simor, Founder and President of Alamo Beer Company. 

“Alamo at its core is local. We jump at the chance to support organizations that share our fierce independent spirit. So, collaborating with a new team to ignite excitement about football in San Antonio – we’re in.”

 “As we prepare for our inaugural season, we are thrilled to develop a partnership with a local brewery such as Alamo Beer Company,” said Commanders’ Team President Vic Gregovits. “This partnership allows us to align with a staple of San Antonio.

San Antonio Commanders complete second day of training camp

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS (January 7, 2019) The San Antonio Commanders completed

the second practice of their training camp schedule on Sunday, January 6 with the

session lasting just under two hours. The session, as all of their practices, occures at Central Catholic High School’s Bob Benson ‘66 Stadium.

They announced the addition of defensive lineman Richard Ash, bringing its training camp roster to 75, Ash spent three seasons at Michigan, from 2010-2013, prior to transferring to Western Michigan for his final collegiate season (2014-2015). Over the course of his college career, Ash collected a career 45 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and two pass deflections. Undrafted in 2015, Ash spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars (2015-16) and Dallas Cowboys (2016-17). In two NFL seasons, Ash totaled 21 tackles.

The Commanders compete in The Alliance of American Football with the Atlanta Legends, Arizona Hotshots, Birmingham Iron, Memphis Express, Orlando Apollos, Salt Lake Stallions and San Diego Fleet. The Commanders team name draws inspiration from San Antonio’s Military City, USA nickname. From Bowie to Travis to the 39,000-plus who graduate each year from military training at Joint Base San Antonio, Commanders have called San Antonio home for more than 300 years.
