Records fall at 2020 Houston Marathon

HOUSTON, TEXAS (January 19, 2020)  Records are made to be broken and that’s what happened on Sunday at the 48th annual Chevron Houston Marathon. With runners from across all 50 states and representing 57 countries battling 25 mile an hour wind gusts, two national records, a world record and a Guiness World Record were set on Sunday.

Hitomi Niya of Japan got things started in the Aramco half marathon smashing both her personal best and the Japanese national record to win in the third fastest time in Aramco Houston Half Marathon history, 1:06:38. She led from start to finish and no competitor in sight as she crossed the finish line.

The men’s half marathon was a whole different story. Fourteen runners raced through the first 5K setting a pace that would put the course record (59:22) in danger. Five runners would remain to battle over the final mile last year’s runner-up, Jemal Yimer (ETH), won in 59:25. It was the second fastest time ever run in Houston and North America. Bernard Ngeno (KEN) finished second at 59:26, and Shardrack Korir (KEN) with a personal best of 59:27 took third.

Ethiopia’s Aksale Merachi in her Houston debut took the women’s marathon title in 2:23:29 thwarting defending champion Biruktayit Degefa (ETH) quest for her fourth victory (a historic feat in Houston’s race history). Degefa did take second with a time of 2:24:47. The win by Merachi was the 14th consecutive win by an Ethiopian woman in Houston. Canadian Mandi Elinore was third setting a Canadian national record finishing in 2:24:50.

The men’s marathon was won by Woldeargay Kekile Gezahegn in what started as a potential course record and then became a two man race. The Ethiopians win gave the African nation three of the four Houston titles. Bronsa Dida was left behind by countryman who won in 2:08:36 more then two minutes faster.

Michael Roeger (AUS), a T46 Paralympian, crushed his own world record (2:22:51) finishing in 2:19:33 keeping his pre-race promise to “put his competitors on notice” heading into the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics.

HOUSTON, TEXAS (January 20, 2019) In her debut appearance in Houston, Emily Sisson (shown right) posted a finishing time of 1:07:30, which was good enough for fifth place in the Houston Half Marathon. Her performance was a scant five seconds off the American Record (1:07:25) set in 2018 by Molly Huddle in Houston.

Sisson, who is a two-time U.S. champion in the 10K (2016) and 5K (2018), had run a previous personal best of 1:08:21 in New York City in 2017. The 27-year-old  Providence College alumni is planning to run her debut marathon later this spring and is the training partner of Huddle.

Pro Athletes to Tackle Chevron Houston Marathon, Aramco Houston Half Marathon

HOUSTON, TEXAS (January 18, 2019) A tantalizing mix of veterans, newcomers, speed and savvy will be on display at the Chevron Houston Marathon and Aramco Houston Half Marathon on Sunday, as top international fields of professional athletes join 25,733 other runners in tackling the streets of the city, cheered by an estimated 250,000 spectators for the city’s largest one-day sporting event.

“This is a year of milestones for us,” said Brant Kotch, race director, in welcoming media to the pre-race press conference on Friday morning. Led by the 25th anniversary of the Run for a Reason Charity Program and the inaugural year of a partnership between Chevron and Aramco in sponsoring Saturday’s We Are Houston 5K, the milestones may also include record-breaking performances and a well-earned birthday party.

In the Chevron Houston Marathon, Ethiopia’s Yitayal Atnafu is seeking to celebrate his 26th birthday by breaking the tape after three consecutive runner-up finishes here. “I am ready to be first this time,” he said Friday. Last year, he led the race by as much as 40 seconds before finishing as runner-up to Bazu Worku, who is not in the field this year.
He will be challenged by, among others, compatriot Abayneh Ayele (the fastest man in the field, with a personal best of 2:06:45); 2017 champion Dominic Ondoro of Kenya; and Albert Korir, a 24-year-old Kenyan who will be racing for the first time in the U.S.

On the women’s side, defending champion Biruktayit Degefa returns for the sixth consecutive year. The Ethiopian’s streak includes victories in 2018 and 2016, a runner-up finish in 2017 and third place in 2015 – the race in which she set her personal best of 2:23:51, the fastest in the women’s field. Her closest rival may be Buze Diriba, a 24-year-old Ethiopian making her debut at the distance. Diriba has seen great success on the U.S. roads, with wins in 2018 at five different distances (5K, 10K, 12K, 10 mile and the half marathon).

For the Americans, 40-year-old Kara Goucher makes her masters debut. The two-time Olympian is running her first marathon since finishing fourth in the 2016 Olympic Marathon Trials, after overcoming a series of injuries. “I’m here for the joy of it,” she said, when asked about her race goals. “I’m here for the love of competing.”

They will all be chasing a first-place prize of $45,000, as well as a race record bonus of $30,000.

In the Aramco Houston Half Marathon, both the men’s and women’s fields are arguably the fastest and deepest ever assembled in this country, with six men bringing personal bests of under 1 hour and six women under 1:07. Few will be shocked if both the men’s and women’s winners run the fastest half marathon ever on U.S. soil: two men come in with personal bests faster than the current mark of 58:46, and four women better or equal the mark of 1:06:29.

Leading the men’s field is Jemal Yimer, a 22-year-old Ethiopian who less than three months ago ran a 58:33 half marathon, tying him for the third-fastest man in history. Not far behind him on the depth chart is Kenya’s Bedan Karoki, the sixth-fastest man in history at 58:42, with another 22-year-old Ethiopian, Shura Kitata (59:16) coming in as one of the best marathoners in the world, having finished as runner-up in 2018 in both London and New York City.

For the women, all eyes will be on Kenya’s Fancy Chemutai, whose personal best of 1:04:52, set in 2018, is only one second off the world record. Sunday will be not only the 23-year-old’s first race in the U.S., but her first in cool temperatures. As of Friday afternoon, the National Weather Service forecast for the 7 a.m. start is for a temperature around 35 degrees and winds of 5-10 mph.

Among her international challengers will be defending champion Ruti Aga of Ethiopia; Kenya’s Mary Wacera (whose winning time here of 1:06:29 is the fastest half marathon ever run on U.S. soil); and Kenyans Gladys Cherono, the 2014 IAAF World Half Marathon Champion and Brigid Kosgei, the 2018 Bank of America Chicago Marathon Champion.

But at least two Americans are also worth watching. Sally Kipyego, the 2012 Olympic silver medalist and 2011 IAAF World Championship silver medalist at 10,000 meters for Kenya, will be running her first race after becoming an American citizen in 2017, and Emily Sisson will be looking to run a personal best that could put her in the record books.

Sisson has twice run the United Airlines NYC Half – in her 2017, she ran 1:08:21 for the fastest-ever U.S. debut – but Houston will her first half marathon on a flat, fast course. The 27-year-old said she is hoping to run under 68 minutes. When asked if she might challenge the American record (67:25) set here last year by her training partner, Molly Huddle, she said, “I know Molly made a comment about her record, and she wouldn’t just say something like that so I’m going to take that as confidence she thinks I’m fit.”

The Aramco Houston Half Marathon athletes will vie for the first-place prize of $20,000, along with a race record bonus of $15,000 and a world record bonus of $50,000.

HOUSTON, TEXAS (January 15, 2017) Fifteen short months ago, almost to the day, then US Army specialist Elkanah Kibet ran his first ever marathon in Chicago. The Kenyan born runner did it in spite of a nine-month deployment to Kuwait and Iraq and without beginning his training for Chicago’s 26.2 mile edition until just six weeks before the race. Kibet put his face on the racing map leading the way for the first nine miles and then hanging with the first group for the next ten. The former Auburn Tiger finished seventh (2:11:31) registering the fastest debut time for an American runner since Andrew Carlson’s 2:11:24 in 2012.   The 31-year-old racer’s performance earned him a spot in U.S. Military’s World Class Athlete Program.

On Sunday, undaunted by the weather, Kibet ranked fourth on Runners World list of top American marathoners in 2015 became the first American to complete the Chevron Houston Marathon. His sixth place finish led a contingent of American runners including fellow Army teammate 1LT Robert Cheseret who finished ninth.

Specialist Leonard Korir, also a member of the Army’s WCAP, won the Aramco Half-Marathon in stirring fashion on Sunday morning. The 2016 US Olympian and two-time national collegiate champion in the 10,000M and 5,000M races edged Ethiopia’s Feyisa Lilesa Gemechu by one-one-hundredth of a second.

Over the years, the Chevron Houston Marathon has become predictable and unpredictable all at the same time. The 2017 edition was no different as Ethiopia won the women’s side for the 11th consecutive year and Kenya topped the leaderboard for the first time in eight years. Dominic Ondoro took the men’s race in 2:12:05 keeping the title in the hands or should I say the feet of the African runners for the 13th consecutive year.

Ethiopian Meskerem Assefa won her first career marathon winning by just 27 seconds over the 2016 champion Biruktayit Degefa in one of the closest finishes in Chevron Houston Marathon history. Assefa admitted during the post-race press conference that she was having cramps throughout the race but was determined to keep an eye on Gedefa and not lose the race. Ethiopia finished 1st, 2nd, and 4th in the race with American Becky Wade (3rd) the lone runner breaking up the African domination finishing five minutes and thirty nine seconds off the pace.

Registration for the 2018 Chevron Houston Marathon is now open.

Houston Marathon Committee Announces Official Run for a Reason Charities

Charity program welcomes 57 nonprofits to its 2011-2012 campaign

HOUSTON, TEXAS (May 4, 2011) The Houston Marathon Committee is excited to announce its new charity lineup for the Chevron Houston Marathon's 2011-2012 Run for a Reason program.

Linking more than 30,000 runners with 57 nonprofit organizations, the Run for a Reason program provides an avenue for race participants, individuals and organizations to collect donations on behalf of an official charity of their choice. In addition, it provides a platform for charities to raise awareness and educate others about their cause.

Last year, the Run for a Reason program generated a record $2,086,000 benefiting 52 nonprofit organizations, surpassing $12.4 million in charitable donations in the program's 17-year history.

"Local philanthropies need support more than ever and the passionate runners and fundraisers who participate in our event annually continue to exceed our expectations," said Wade Morehead, executive director of the Houston Marathon Committee. "We are proud to welcome and support these 57 charities, and are truly pleased with the continued success and growth of the Run for a Reason program."

HOUSTON, TEXAS (Janaury 17, 2010) Teshome Gelana and defending women’s champion Teyba Erkesso led an Ethiopian sweep of the 2010 Chevron Houston Marathon, each breaking course records in the process.

Gelana, running his second marathon in six weeks, broke away from a pack of five runners at the 22-mile mark and finished in 2:07:37. He cut 15 seconds off the previous record set by fellow Ethiopian Deriba Merga last year.

“I did not expect to run this fast. It was unexpected, but I hope the future will bring even more interesting things for me. I think I can run 2:05,” said Gelana.

His personal best prior to the Houston Marathon was 2:11:50, set in 2008.

Ethiopian Zembaba Yigeze finished in second place (2:08:27), while Kenyan Jason Mbote was third (2:08:58).

Erkesso dominated the woman’s race for the second year in a row, crossing the finish line in a course record. Erkesso won by nearly five minutes, lowering her record set last year by 25 seconds with a time of 2:23:53.

Russian Margarita Plaksina (Russia) was the second in the women’s race with 2:28:44. Alemitu Abera (Ethopia) was third in 2:31:01.

Both Galana and Erkesso received $35,000 for their victories.

Antonio Vega (St. Paul, Minnesota) and Shalane Flanagan (Portland, Oregon) claimed 2010 USA Half Marathon Championships with their victories in the Aramco Houston Half Marathon.

Vega finished in 1:01:54, setting a new personal best by more than a minute, while Flanagan shattered the course record in the women’s half marathon championship, finishing in 1:09:41.

“It felt like just another day, just another practice. It wasn’t until the last 400 meters did I say 'okay, this is a race and I need to make sure I seal the deal,'” said Flanagan, who has her long-term sights set on the marathon.

“It was a very good effort, very controlled, and it was just a great day for running.”

Long Standing Houston Marathon Record Could Fall Sunday

By Chris Price

HOUSTON, TEXAS (January 16, 2009) Coming off a fourth-place finish at the 2008 Olympic Marathon in Beijing, Ethiopia's Deriba Merga has committed to attack the long standing Chevron Houston Marathon record this Sunday in the 37th running of the 2009 Chevron Houston Marathon. Merga's performance in China (2:10:21) was part of an impressive year of running for the 28-year-old from Nekemte, Ethiopia.

Recently, Merga clocked a personal record and a course record of 59:15 in winning the New Delhi Half Marathon on November 9, 2008. Prior to the Games, he ran a PR of 2:06:38 to finish sixth at the London Marathon in April. Merga is the second-fastest Ethiopian marathoner of all time. Only world record holder Haile Gebrselassie has run faster. Merga is one of the most talented runners to commit to the Chevron Houston Marathon in the history of the event and with the assistance of two pacesetters, he plans to take aim at Houston's course record of 2:10:04.

The course standard is one of the oldest in the sport, set in 1989 by Richard Kaitany (KEN). With Haji Adilo, Merga's coach at his side at today's press conference, they are aiming for a 62 minute first half with 4 pacesetters, training partner Tilahun Regessa (ETH), Gebo Burka (ETH), Festes Langat (KEN),Mindaugas Pukstas (LIT) and Eric Chirchir(KEN). Adilo believes he could easily run under 2.06 and get ready to run the 2009 BAA Boston Marathon heading down the same path as fellow teammate Dire Tune (ETH), who set the Chevron Houston Marathon course record last year and then went on to win the 2008 BAA Boston Marathon 3-months later. Merga who trains in Addis Ababa, normally at a morning runs at 12-15C/54-59F should find the starting temperture of 10C/50F very reasonable as a major cold front has blown all over the US and Canada in recent days.

Merga, who felt wonderful in Beijing, was running very comfortable until 30km. As he approached the 37km mark, he had a bad stomach and had to slow down, then being passed on the final lap in the "Birdnest" to lose his Olympic Bronze Medal. Merga, who received the information of the faster Gebrselassie earlier in the day from Dubai, also explained he doesn't like the rain and hopes to run a much more even race with a 62 minute opening half.

Joining Merga in Houston will be three-time Chevron Houston Marathon winner and No. 1 seed David Cheruiyot (KEN). Cheruiyot won back-to-back marathons in 2005 and 2006 and added his third Houston title in 2008. Kasime Adillo (ETH), second in Houston in 2008 in 2:12:47, Yuri Abramov (RUS), Kenneth Mungara
(KEN), winner of the 2008 Toronto and Prague marathons, and Andrew Smith (CAN) also are scheduled to compete in the marathon. Teyba Erkesso (ETH), Amane Gobena (ETH), Lioudmila Kortchaguina (CAN) and Albina Gallyamova (RUS) will lead the women's marathon field.

Erkesso, 25, who ran a world record of 51:44 at the 2007 Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run, will be running her debut marathon and is expected to challenge Houston's 2:24:40 course record set by her teammate, Tune, in 2008. She is set to be paced at 73 minutes for the opening 21.1km and thinks 2.26 is in her grasp

Kortchaguina is a three-time Canadian ING Ottawa Marathon champion and owner of a 2:29:42 PR from the Ottawa Marathon in 2006. She placed seventh in the half marathon in her previous trip to Houston two years ago. Romania's, Nuta Olara a seasoned veteran on the USA Road Circuit is coming off a win at the San Antonio Rock n Roll Marathon and is still attempting to best her PR from the Bank of America Chicago Marathon from 2004, 2.24.33

The prize purse for the open marathon races is $130,000, with a $35,000 first-place award in both the men's and
women's events. A course record is worth a $10,000 bonus.

Chevron, Aramco Services Company Back As Title Sponsors Of Marathon And Half Marathon

HOUSTON, TEXAS (January 1, 2009) Thanks in large part to the support of several major sponsors, a record 18,000 runners have registered to run in the 2009 Chevron Houston Marathon and Aramco Houston Half Marathon. Both events are scheduled for January 18.

It is through the generous support of sponsors, such as Chevron, Aramco Services and El Paso Corporation, title sponsor of the companion EP5K, that Houston Marathon race weekend has exploded in popularity and become a racing destination for thousands of runners from around the world.

“We pride ourselves in creating a race experience that is second to none,” said Steven Karpas, managing director. “Whether it is a world-class runner taking aim at a course record or a first-time marathoner seeking to finish, we strive to ensure all competitors are treated like champions. We simply could not accomplish that without the help of our sponsors.”

The nonprofit Houston Marathon Committee depends on the support of companies large and small for financial contributions and volunteers to run virtually every aspect of race weekend – from the technology powering athlete alerts to water stations along the course.

The backing of key corporate sponsors also has enabled Houston to serve as the host city for the USA Half Marathon Championships. The men’s title race will be held in Houston for the fifth consecutive year in 2009, while the women’s half marathon crown will be decided in the Space City for the third year in a row.

“We are very fortunate, especially in light of the current economic challenges facing our country, to have the ongoing support of companies who share our passion for this great event,” said Karpas.

In addition to the three race title sponsors, ABB, Memorial Hermann Sports Medicine, Under Armour, Sports Authority and H-E-B are supporting Houston Marathon race weekend 2009.

The Chevron Houston Marathon, a Running USA founding member, is the nation’s premier winter marathon, annually attracting participants from nearly all 50 U.S. states and more than 20 foreign countries.
