LAKE CHARLES, LOUISIANA (March 10, 2024) In a thrilling upset, the No. 8 New Orleans Privateers defeated No. 5 Southeastern 78-66 in the first round of the 2024 Jersey Mike’s Southland Conference Men’s Basketball Championship. It was a game full of twists and turns, but ultimately, New Orleans emerged victorious.

Led by starting guard Jordan Johnson (University of Denver, Memphis, Tennessee, shown above) with an impressive 34-point performance, the Privateers showcased their skills on the court. This win means they advance to the quarterfinals, where they will face off against fourth-seeded Lamar.

Despite Southeastern's efforts, they couldn't overcome New Orleans' tenacity. Southeastern's starting forward Nick Caldwell (Dutchtown HS, Prairie, Louisiana) faced foul trouble throughout the game and eventually fouled out, limiting his impact on the court. Roger McFarlane (Dodge City JC, Fort Lauderdale, Florida) led the Lions with 18 points, but it wasn't enough to secure the win.

The game started with both teams trading runs, but it was New Orleans who finished the first half strong, taking the lead by the score of 39-33, and never trailed in the game. heir defense proved crucial, forcing Southeastern into numerous turnovers.

Though Southeastern made a late push, cutting the lead to eight points, Johnson and the Privateers responded with the determination they showed throughout the entire match, closing out the game with a 13-9 run.

Johnson's performance was exceptional, particularly his clutch three-pointer late in the game, which sealed the victory for New Orleans.

HOUSTON, TEXAS (October 26, 2019) The Southeastern Louisiana Lions scored two touchdowns in the first quarter and the HBU Huskies were unable to catch up in the Lions 52-13 win at Husky Stadium on Saturday evening. The field goals by Gino Garcia, 43 yards and 31 yards, and the six-yard TD run by Jerreth Sterns, were the only scoring drives the Huskies could muster in route to their fourth straight loss of the season. The Huskies stand at a 4-5 record with three games to go in their 2019 campaign. The two programs have met five times prior to 2019, with the Lions winning four of the five contests. Both games end with scores of 3-2 with the rubber game set for Saturday

HOUSTON, TEXAS (April 8, 2017) HBU and Southeastern Louisiana split two tightly-contested games on Friday afternoon (April 7) at Husky Field with both games ending in a score of 3-2.

Game 1

Both teams put baserunners on in each of the first two innings but neither team could break through with a run until the fourth. In the top of the inning, Southeastern Louisiana (18-19, 7-7 SLC) got a leadoff walk from Kinsey Nichols followed by an HBU error on a sacrifice bunt, putting runners on second and third with nobody out. The next batter, Mattie Ort, reached on an HBU error that allowed Nichols to score the first run of the game. Ali McCoy followed Ort with a fielder’s choice to score Mahalia Gibson and make it a 2-0 game.

The Huskies (12-18, 3-11) had an answer in the bottom half of the fourth with juniors Nicole Shedd and Libby Brown reaching via hit-by-pitch and a walk to start the inning. Both baserunners advanced on a wild pitch to put two in scoring position with no outs. Kassie James brought Shedd home with a sacrifice fly to right to make it 1-0 but Brown was stranded at third.

Kay Schroeder singled to lead off the fifth and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Heidi Jaquez. With one out, Cecilia Bauer singled to left to put runners on first and third. Two batters later, with the bases loaded, Shedd drove in HBU’s second run with a sacrifice fly to right that allowed Schroeder to score and tie the game at 2-2.

The Lions got a hit and another runner reached on an error in the top of the sixth, resulting in runners on first and third with one out but HBU starter Emily Mueller pitched out of trouble to keep SLU off the board.

In the bottom of the seventh, Shedd drew a one-out walk before Brown drove a double to right center to give the Huskies two runners in scoring position with one out. James then stroked an 0-1 offering over the center fielder’s head to score Shedd and end the game, 3-2, in the Huskies’ favor.

Mueller threw a complete game in the circle, logging seven innings with just two unearned runs allowed on three hits. The senior struck out three and walked four while improving her season record to 5-11.

Shedd was 1-for-1 in the game with a walk and a sacrifice fly while also getting hit by a pitch. She had a hand in all three of the Husky runs, scoring twice and driving in one.

Game 2

Southeastern started the scoring early in game two with Kalyn Watts doubling down the left field line on the second pitch of the game. Jaquelyn Ramon drew a walk before Watts moved up to third on a wild pitch. That put her in position to score on Nichols’ sacrifice fly for a 1-0 Lions lead after half an inning.

The score remained 1-0 until the fifth when the Huskies found themselves with Schroeder on first with one out. Jaquez singled to center, moving Schroeder up to second, with Bauer following with a fly-out to center. With two out, Megan Hiers dropped a single in down the right field line to score Schroeder but Hiers was caught trying to advance to second on the hit, ending the threat but tying the game.

The Lions got a leadoff triple off the bat of McCoy in the sixth inning but HBU starter Stephanie Buenrostro retired the next two batters. With a runner on third and two outs, Alli Daigle came up with a single up the middle to score McCoy. Watts then followed up with her second double of the game off the top of the wall to left, scoring Daigle and giving SLU a 3-1 lead through five and a half.

HBU got a two-out walk from Brown in the bottom half of the sixth before Brooke Bushman singled up the middle. With runners on first and second, Demi Janak drove a double to left center that scored Brown from second but Janak and Bushman were stranded at second and third with the score 3-2.

The Huskies almost got some more two-out magic in the seventh as Hiers reached on an error by the Lions’ second baseman. Shedd smoked a 2-0 pitch down the left field line, moving Hiers up to third and bringing James, the hero from game one, to the plate. It wasn’t meant to be, however, as James lined out to second to end the game.

Buenrostro suffered the loss in the circle, falling to 5-4 for the season, allowing three earned runs on eight hits with a pair of walks.

Jaquez, Shedd, Brown, James and Bushman all enjoyed multi-hit days for HBU with hits in both games. Jaquez led the team with three hits in the doubleheader.

HBU and Southeastern Louisiana will conclude their three-game series on Saturday, April 8, afternoon at Husky Field with first pitch slated for 12:00 p.m.

SUGAR LAND, TEXAS (May 28, 2016) The No. 2 Southeastern Louisiana Lions extended their season and advanced to the championship game of the Southland Conference Baseball Tournament with a 4-1 win over the No. 6 McNeese State Cowboys on Saturday, May 28, 2016. The game was the first matchup of the day at Constellation Field in the Houston suburb of Sugar Land, Texas.

The Lions got on the scoreboard early in the game with single runs in both the first and second innings. Left fielder Ryan Byers connected on his first pitch for a double down the right field line. The hit sent leadoff batter Jacob Seward home from third base. The center fielder got on base with a hit on a 2-1 pitch down the right field line; his fourth triple of the season. The RBI was Byers’ 29th for 2016. Their second run occured when shortstop Brennan Breaud singled through the left side, scoring designated hitter Daniel Midyett from third base.

Over the next five innings, little action occurred until Cowboy second baseman Joe Provenzano, on a 1-1 pitch, sent the ball to deep center field for a stand up triple, his second of the season. It was the first hot for McNeese in the game. Matt Gallier was next to bat when starter Domenick Carlini sailed a wild pitch past catcher Sam Robertson, allowing Provenzano to advance to home for McNeese’s only run of the game. When Gallier drew a walk to place the tying run on base, Lion head coach Matt Riser decided Carlini was done. He brought in right handed reliever Josh Green to complete the inning.

The Lion one-run difference would be short lived as Robertson tattooed an 0-1 pitch over the awing covering the party deck in left field for his first home run of the season. The round tripper gave the Lions a 3-1 lead in the seventh inning. They added an insurance run later in the inning when Seward grounded out to second base, allowing third baseman Derrick Mount to score from third base. The Lions will next face the winner of the Sam Houston versus Stephen F. Austin matchup in the tournament final on Sunday, May 29, 2016 with a 12 noon scheduled first pitch.

HOUSTON, TEXAS (October 24, 2015) With both teams valiantly taking to Dunham Field at Husky Stadium before the torrential rainfall from the remnants of Hurricane Patricia hit the Houston area, the Lions of Southeastern Louisianadowned the Houston Baptist Huskies by the score of 22-7 on Saturday, October 24, 2015. With the loss, the Huskies fall to 2-6 for the season and 0-5 in Southland Conference play. Southeastern raised their season record to 4-3 and 3-2 in conference action. SEL increased their series record to 2-0 against the Huskies. Last season, Southeastern downed HBU by the score of 76-7 in Hammond, Louisiana.

Head coach Vic Shealy stated prior to the game, as quoted in an HBU press release:
“Southeastern is certainly a tough challenge, both athletically and the job they do coaching their kids. In this league, you don’t expect it to be easy any week, and I think our staff, a long time ago, came to appreciate what it takes to exist in this league and Southeastern has been one of the very top here under Coach Roberts and I know it’s a great challenge.”
The Lions scored nine points in the first quarter on a safety and a passing touchdown. Husky quarterback Max Staver bobbled the ball on a third-and-eight quarterback keeper play for a three-yard loss. He recovered the ball in the end zone, but was down for the safety. At the 2:55 mark, quarterback D’Shaie Landor connected with De’Quan Smith for a 10-yard touchdown pass. Jonathan Tatum split the uprights with the kicking conversion to give Southeastern Louisiana their nine-point lead after 15 minutes of play. With 58 seconds left in the half, they scored their second touchdown on the game, wide receiver Trey Hallman carried the ball the final two yards of a 80-yard drive for the six points. Tatum again did his job and scored the kicking conversion to make the score 16-0 at halftime.

The Lions added an insurance score when Julius Maracalin capped a 66-yard, four play dive with a five-yard run for his second touchdown of the season. After the Tatum extra point, SLU led HBU by the score of 22-0 with 9:24 remaining in the game. HBU finally got on the scoreboard 62 seconds later when Terrance Peters rushed 77 yards for the score. Travis Shinn connected on the extra point attempt to cap HBU scoring for the afternoon.

Peters carried the ball 16 times for 139 yards to lead the Huskies, while Maxwell Brown caught two passes for 17 yards. Defensively, Cody Moncure tallied 15 tackles, with eight of them solo, while Dorrin Turner accounted for 12 tackles (two solo). HBU could manage only 199 yards of total offense, with 170 of those yards on the ground. The Lions racked up 455 yards of total offense with 167 yards in the air.

It took the Huskies until the fourth quarter to get on the scoreboard and Shealy commented earlier in the week, via a press release, concerning getting off to a good start in games.
“That’s one of the things I’ve been proud of many of our weeks is we’ve come out and have played really well the first half, then the third quarter has been one of our challenges. I feel like to be down 21-0, it’s hard on the road, because you don’t have as much there to fight back, other than internally, to emotionally build on. How you start off does dictate the confidence and some of the things that give you a chance to compete. With that being said, Southeastern is capable of exploding with their skill kids. I’m a huge fan of D’Shaie Landor and what he does with the ball in his hands is pretty amazing, those 10 seniors on defense and how they swarm, tackle and run to the ball. You can look at those guys on the back end in Harlan Miller and Jordan Batiste -- they are some of the very best defensive players in our league, but you get beyond them and there’s just so many good players, you know in order for your team to build confidence, they’ve got to have something good happen to them. How we come out and play in the first quarter will speak volumes.”
HBU will next face the Lamar Cardinals on Saturday, October 31 with kickoff scheduled for 2 p.m. CT. SLU will play their next game against Central Arkansas on the same day with a 7 p.m. CT start.
