AMES, IOWA (March 15, 2024) In an exciting doubleheader, the University of Houston softball team faced off against the Iowa State Cyclones, but unfortunately, the Cougars fell short in the finale by the score of 9-4, allowing Iowa State to claim victory and sweep Friday's matchups.

Houston started strong, taking an early lead with a fiery performance in the first inning.  Jazmyn Rollin showcased her prowess with a powerful two-run homer, setting the tone for the Cougars. Kennedy Thomas also contributed with an RBI-double, propelling Houston to a promising start.

However, Iowa State rallied back with a vengeance, seizing control of the game with a five-run surge in the third inning. Despite Houston's efforts, the Cyclones proved to be a formidable opponent, showcasing their resilience and offensive prowess throughout the matchup.

While the Cougars displayed notable performances from Rollin, Thomas, and Bree Cantu, they struggled to contain Iowa State's relentless offense. Iowa State's Aziza Rodriguez and Jaiden Ralston delivered solid pitching performances, limiting Houston's scoring opportunities and securing the win for the Cyclones.

AUSTIN, TEXAS (April 9, 2020) Texas softball senior pitcher/utility player Miranda Elish (shown right) was named the 2020 Softball America Shortened Season National Player of the Year, while both Elish (first team) and junior second baseman Janae Jefferson (second team) were honored as 2020 Softball America Shortened Season All-Americans.

The duo helped guide the Longhorns to a 24-3 mark and final rankings of No. 1 in the Softball America and No. 3 in both the USA Today/NFCA and ESPN.com/USA Softball polls. Along the way, Texas tied for the third-best 27-game start in school history, while leading the nation in team batting average (.376) and total doubles (62). The Burnt Orange & White also ranked in the NCAA Division I national top 10 in doubles-per-game (2nd – 2.30), on-base percentage (3rd - .450), solo shutouts (4th – 10), slugging percentage (5th – .597), won/loss percentage (6th – .889) and scoring (8th – 7.37). UT rallied for eight come-from-behind wins, went 5-1 against ranked teams (including beating the top two teams in the nation in consecutive games – No. 1 UCLA & No. 2 Washington) and scored more runs over the first 27 games (199) than any squad in program history.

On her way to national player of the year honors, Elish led the Big 12 Conference and ranked sixth in NCAA Division I in wins (11) while posting a 1.25 ERA, 11 complete games, four shutouts and 96 strikeouts over 84.0 innings of work while limiting the opposition to a miniscule .158 average. At the plate, the Crown Point, Ind., native also hit at a .370 clip over 23 contests with seven doubles, four HR’s and 19 RBIs to go with a 1.200 OPS. Among her individual highlights in 2020 were earning NFCA National Player of the Week honors (Feb. 11), after batting .818 with four HR’s and a remarkable 17 RBIs during the six-game Texas Classic, as well as tossing her second career perfect game by retiring all 21 batters she faced in a 7-0 win over New Mexico (March 8).

Jefferson continued her remarkable career in the Burnt Orange & White by leading the Big 12 in batting average (.554 – 3rd in NCAA Division I), hits (41 – 4th in NCAA) and on-base percentage (.607 – 3rd in NCAA) while posting eight extra-base hits, 13 walks and stealing 10 bases. The Humble, Texas, native currently owns the best career batting average in school history at .425, well ahead of Lexy Bennett’s (2009-12) second-ranked .385 mark. During the abbreviated 2020 campaign, Jefferson led the squad with 13 multi-hit games, including five three-hit efforts, and ended the season on a 17-game streak of reaching base safely. She also earned the final Big 12 Conference Player of the Week accolade on March 10 after hitting .750 with a 1.714 OPS during UT’s 4-0 run through the Longhorn Invitational.

Huskies Split Doubleheader with SLU

Both games end with scores of 3-2 with the rubber game set for Saturday

HOUSTON, TEXAS (April 8, 2017) HBU and Southeastern Louisiana split two tightly-contested games on Friday afternoon (April 7) at Husky Field with both games ending in a score of 3-2.

Game 1

Both teams put baserunners on in each of the first two innings but neither team could break through with a run until the fourth. In the top of the inning, Southeastern Louisiana (18-19, 7-7 SLC) got a leadoff walk from Kinsey Nichols followed by an HBU error on a sacrifice bunt, putting runners on second and third with nobody out. The next batter, Mattie Ort, reached on an HBU error that allowed Nichols to score the first run of the game. Ali McCoy followed Ort with a fielder’s choice to score Mahalia Gibson and make it a 2-0 game.

The Huskies (12-18, 3-11) had an answer in the bottom half of the fourth with juniors Nicole Shedd and Libby Brown reaching via hit-by-pitch and a walk to start the inning. Both baserunners advanced on a wild pitch to put two in scoring position with no outs. Kassie James brought Shedd home with a sacrifice fly to right to make it 1-0 but Brown was stranded at third.

Kay Schroeder singled to lead off the fifth and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Heidi Jaquez. With one out, Cecilia Bauer singled to left to put runners on first and third. Two batters later, with the bases loaded, Shedd drove in HBU’s second run with a sacrifice fly to right that allowed Schroeder to score and tie the game at 2-2.

The Lions got a hit and another runner reached on an error in the top of the sixth, resulting in runners on first and third with one out but HBU starter Emily Mueller pitched out of trouble to keep SLU off the board.

In the bottom of the seventh, Shedd drew a one-out walk before Brown drove a double to right center to give the Huskies two runners in scoring position with one out. James then stroked an 0-1 offering over the center fielder’s head to score Shedd and end the game, 3-2, in the Huskies’ favor.

Mueller threw a complete game in the circle, logging seven innings with just two unearned runs allowed on three hits. The senior struck out three and walked four while improving her season record to 5-11.

Shedd was 1-for-1 in the game with a walk and a sacrifice fly while also getting hit by a pitch. She had a hand in all three of the Husky runs, scoring twice and driving in one.

Game 2

Southeastern started the scoring early in game two with Kalyn Watts doubling down the left field line on the second pitch of the game. Jaquelyn Ramon drew a walk before Watts moved up to third on a wild pitch. That put her in position to score on Nichols’ sacrifice fly for a 1-0 Lions lead after half an inning.

The score remained 1-0 until the fifth when the Huskies found themselves with Schroeder on first with one out. Jaquez singled to center, moving Schroeder up to second, with Bauer following with a fly-out to center. With two out, Megan Hiers dropped a single in down the right field line to score Schroeder but Hiers was caught trying to advance to second on the hit, ending the threat but tying the game.

The Lions got a leadoff triple off the bat of McCoy in the sixth inning but HBU starter Stephanie Buenrostro retired the next two batters. With a runner on third and two outs, Alli Daigle came up with a single up the middle to score McCoy. Watts then followed up with her second double of the game off the top of the wall to left, scoring Daigle and giving SLU a 3-1 lead through five and a half.

HBU got a two-out walk from Brown in the bottom half of the sixth before Brooke Bushman singled up the middle. With runners on first and second, Demi Janak drove a double to left center that scored Brown from second but Janak and Bushman were stranded at second and third with the score 3-2.

The Huskies almost got some more two-out magic in the seventh as Hiers reached on an error by the Lions’ second baseman. Shedd smoked a 2-0 pitch down the left field line, moving Hiers up to third and bringing James, the hero from game one, to the plate. It wasn’t meant to be, however, as James lined out to second to end the game.

Buenrostro suffered the loss in the circle, falling to 5-4 for the season, allowing three earned runs on eight hits with a pair of walks.

Jaquez, Shedd, Brown, James and Bushman all enjoyed multi-hit days for HBU with hits in both games. Jaquez led the team with three hits in the doubleheader.

HBU and Southeastern Louisiana will conclude their three-game series on Saturday, April 8, afternoon at Husky Field with first pitch slated for 12:00 p.m.
