Santos tops Monterrey 1-0 in Houston friendly

HOUSTON, TEXAS (June 18, 2022) The 6,000-plus fans at PNC Stadium on Saturday night saw to rivals from Liga MX faceoff in a friendly preseason match which saw Santos Laguna take a 1-0 win over CF Monterrey.

Spirited and aggressive play by both sides kept the match scoreless until in 79th minute when forward Harold Preciado came off the bench for the only goal of the game to secure the win for Santos.

In the 40th minute, fans were brought to the feet when medical personal were called onto the pitch to attend to Santos' Ismael Govea. The starting defender was taken from the field on a gurney and his condition was unknown at the time of this article's publication.

In the previous five matches between Rayados and Santos, the were even, with two wins on each side and only one draw. In their most recent meeting, Monterrey won at home on matchday 13 of the Clausura 2022.

With just a few days before a  new tournament in Mexico and the countdown to the Apertura 2022 beginning The match was a key pre-tournament tune-up prior to the start of the upcoming season.

Monterrey outlasts Club America 2-1 in Tour Aguila

HOUSTON, TEXAS (November 16, 2019) Scoring two goals in the first half,  C.F. Monterrey held on for a 2-1 win against Club America in an exhibition friendly game as a part Tour Aguila at BBVA Stadium in Houston, Texas. America took an early 1-0 lead in the 7th minute off a penalty kick by defender Emanuel Aguilera.


Monterrey responded with a goal from Daniel Parra, with an assist credited to Alfonso Gonzalez, in the 16th minute. They score the game-winner five minutes later on a Vincent Janessen goal. Dorian Paboni provided the assist.

Tour Aguila is the official United States tour of Club America dating back to July 3, 2016.

Cruz Azul downs Monterrey 2-1 in MoneyGram SocioMX Cup

HOUSTON, TEXAS (July 4, 2016) In the 89th minute, Cruz Azul got a break and scored the winning goal, giving them a 2-1 win over Monterrey in the semifinals of the MoneyGram SocioMX Cup at Houston’s BBVA Compass Stadium on Sunday, July 3, 2016. Monterrey will next face Pumas UNAM in the double-headed final at Cotton Bowl Stadium on Wednesday, July 6, 2016 with Cruz Azul and Club Santos Laguna facing off in the other match.

It took 42 minutes of play before the ball found the inside of a goal. Monterrey’s Dorlan Rabon received the ball about 30 yards out, dribbled it down the right side, and cutting inside to avoid Cruz Azul defenders. At the top of the box, he drilled it past goalkeeper Jose de Jesus Corona. Cruz Azul tied the score in the 47th minute when Joffre Guerron got the ball at midfield; dribbling it down the field and shooting from the tip right side of the box for the score. They secured the game victory with the winning goal in the 89th minute with a shot by Victor Zuniga.

In previous games of the tournament, Cruz Azul fell to Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles 2- 1 at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on June 29. In the other semi-final game, on July 2, Club Santos Laguna downed Pumas UNAM 2-1 at Avaya Stadium in San Jose, California on July 2.

Cruz Azul Downs Monterrey 1-0 in InetrLiga Group B Action

HOUSTON, TEXAS, (January 5, 2008) With two teams hoping to get a second win and two others hoping to notch a victory, Interliga 2008 continued at Robertson Stadium in Houston on Saturday night.

Playing under better condition than the previous four games, with temperatures in the mid- 60s, fans were looking for fantastic soccer as Cruz Azul taking on Monterrey and San Luis facing Pumas in the nightcap.

In the first game of the doubleheader, Cruz Azul defeated Monterrey 1-0 to gain 3 points and stay alive in Group B action.

Azul took early control of the game when midfielder Edgar Andrade took a pass 15 yards out and booted it past goalkeeper Christian Martinez in the 18th minute.

Spirited play bolstered by substitutions in the second period kept both teams aiming for the goal, but the solid defense and excellent goalkeeping of Azul would not allow Monterrey to penetrate its goal.

Azul was 0-1 after Wednesday games in Dallas, while Monterrey, also 0-1 will now have to hope for a win against San Luis on Tuesday at The Home Depot Center in Carson, California.

Azul showed a solid offense against Monterrey after losing to San Luis 1-0 in Dallas on Wednesday. They will now face Pumas in the nightcap game on January 8 in Carson.

As a result of his goal, Andrade was selected as the AT&T Man of the Match.
