FRISCO, TEXAS (January 3, 2007) Pumas, fielding a team of reserves, defeated Monterrey 1-0 on Wednesday night at Pizza Hut Park to open the InterLiga tournament.
Pablo Bonells, recovered a cross pass from forward Gaston Caprari which deflected off the goal post for the score.
Monterrey controlled most of the first half, but was unable to find the goal in front of 8,504 freezing fans.
Ismael Iniguez's shot in the 10th minute was wide right against Monterrey goalkeeper Jonathan Orozco. Three minutes before the half, Morales took aim against Monterray, however defender Edgar Solona deflected his shot.
Monterrey's Jared Borgetti, the all-time leading scorer for the Mexican national team, left the game in the 61st minute. Borgetti had an opportunity to score in the 31st minute, but Pumas keeper Odin Patino stopped his header.
Cruz Azul and San Luis played in the second game at Pizza Hut Park. Sam Luis went on to win 1-0 on an Alfredo Moreno penalty kick in the 17th minute.
The tournament continues with Group A matches on Thursday evening in Houston. Toluca will play Atlas in the 7:00 PM game, with Morelia and Club America taking the field in the nightcap.
