Three Houston Cougars To Compete In European Championships

HOUSTON, TEXAS (August 8, 2010) Three University of Houston swimming and diving team members have been selected by their respective countries to compete in the 30th European Championships.

Swimmer Reka Kovacs and divers Julia Lonnegren and Anastasia Pozdniakova will be in Budapest, Hungary, August 8-15 for the championships.

Lonnegren, who is competing for Sweden, will dive in the 10-meter platform competition on August 12.

Pozdniakova who is representing Russia, will participate in the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events in addition to the 3-meter synchronized competition with Russian partner Svetlana Filpova. The 1-meter event is scheduled to take place August 10, with the 3-meter event on August 14 and the synchronized event on August 15.

Competing for Hungary, Reka Kovacs is scheduled to swim in the 200-meter and 400-meter individual medley and the 200-meter breaststroke.

The 400-yard IM event will take place on August 9 with the 200-yard breaststroke scheduled for August 11 and both the 200-yard IM set for August 12.

Pozdniakova is the current NCAA champion in the 1-meter springboard and was the runner up in the 3-meter springboard at this year's NCAA Championships She was also the silver medal in 3-meter synchronized diving at he 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

Lonnegram was the bronze medalist in both the 1-meter springboard and platform events at the 2010 Conference USA Championships.

Kovacs placed 4th in the 200-yard breatstsroke at the 2010 C-USA Championships, making the NCAA "B" cut.
