Southland Conference basketball tournament returns to Merrell Center in Katy, Texas

KATY, TEXAS (March 12, 2014) The Southland Conference will kick-off the 2014 men’s basketball tournament on Wednesday, March 13, 2014 at the Leonard E. Merrell Center in the Houston suburb of Katy, Texas. 

Eight teams qualified for the post-season tournament which will determine the conference’s entry into the NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament which begins the following week.

Wednesday’s first game will see the No. 5 seed, Nicholls State facing the No. 8 seed, Southeastern Louisiana.

Nicholls State posts a 10-8 conference record and a 13-14 season record while Southeastern Louisiana is 7-11 in conference play and 12-17 for the season.

Tip-off will be at 5 p.m. CDT, with the winner facing No. 4 seed Northwestern State (16-13, 12-6 SLC) on Thursday, March 13, 2-14 at 5 p.m. CDT.

The second game on Wednesday will have No. 6 Oral Roberts (16-15, 10-8 SLC) playing No. 7 McNeese State (11-19, 9-9 SLC) with a 7:30 p.m. start.

The winner will advance to the next round, playing No. 3 Sam Houston State at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 13, 2014.

Action continues on Friday, March 14 with No. 2 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and No. 1 Stephen F. Austin playing the team winning on Thursday, March 13.

The top four seed earned byes into the later round of the tournament as a result of their season records.
In 2014, No. 2 seed Northwestern State upset No. 1 seed Stephen F. Austin 68-66 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

The Demons lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament by the score of 79-47 to the Florida Gators.
SFA was invited to play in the NIT Tournament, losing in the first round to Stanford, 58-57.

The first four games of the conference tournament will be streamed live for free on the Southland Conference Digital Network.
