Incarnate Word Cardinals fall to SFA Lumberjacks 42-19

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS (October 29, 2016) The University of the Incarnate Word Cardinals scored 13 points in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough to recover from an early game deficit and dropped a 42-19 decision to the SFA Lumberjacks on Saturday, October 29, 2016 at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium in San Antonio, Texas. With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 1-8 for the season and 1-6 in Southland Conference play.


The Cardinals got on the scoreboard early in the game with a 24-yard field goal by Cody Seidel in the first quarter. The Lumberjacks responded in the second quarter with two touchdowns runs of four and six yards by Zach Conque. Incarnate Word added three point in the third quarter when Seidel booted a 19-yard field goal. SFA came right back, scoring two additional touchdowns late in the third quarter. The Cardinals scored a fourth quarter touchdown when Junior Sessions capped a nine play, 85-yard drive with a one yard scoring run. SFA added two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter before the Cardinals scored the final touchdown of the game on an 11-yard pass from Taylor Laird to Jordan Hicks.

UIW tallied 18 first downs, and 321 yards of total offense while Trent Brittain completed 15-of-31 passes for 170 yards and one interception. Cody Edwards caught six passes for 75 yards and Sessions tallied 16 carries for 36 yards.

Next up for the Cardinals is a Saturday, November 5 meeting with Southeastern Louisiana at home. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. CST. The game will be homecoming for the Cardinals as they host Military Appreciation Day.
