HBU’s Season Ends at SLC Tournament

The Huskies fall to Central Arkansas, 1-0

CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS (NOVEMBER 1, 2017)  The fifth-seeded HBU women’s soccer team lost a 1-0 decision in the first round of the Southland Conference championship tournament, falling to No. 4 seed Central Arkansas on Wednesday evening at Jack Dugan Stadium on the campus of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

In the 10th minute, Central Arkansas’ (11-9-0) Ashley Smith hit the post with a shot that was followed six seconds later by a Dayna Mounie shot that edged up to the goal line but stayed out of the net. Junior Sabriah Spencer recorded the first shot on goal for HBU (7-7-3) at the 13:48 mark.

Autumn Wildung had a dangerous shot deflected just wide of the goal in the 20th minute with the Bears responding by Mounie and Alex Moore putting a pair of shots on goal a few minutes later within a 40-second span. UCA forced Huskies’ goalkeeper Alanis Guevara into three saves in the first half, holding a11-6 advantage in shots.

In the second half, UCA subbed in Lauren Mercuri for Anna Hughes in goal and the Huskies forced her into three saves in the first 23 minutes but were unable to find the net. Central Arkansas broke the tie in the 74th minute when Maci Schoonover scored from the top of the box after a cross from Moore. With a shade under five minutes left in regulation, freshman Avery Cortez’s attempt from the left side was stopped by Mercuri, preserving the shutout for the Bears.

Six different Huskies put shots on goal with Wildung attempting a team-high three. For the match, HBU attempted 13 shots to the 20 attempts by the Bears. The Huskies held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks. Guevara finished with five saves in the loss.

The loss eliminates the Huskies from of the SLC tournament and concludes the 2017 season.
