HOUSTON, TEXAS (June 16, 2026) Several tournament favorites were frustrated on June 15 as underdogs earned valuable results across Groups G and H at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The biggest surprise came in Group H, where World Cup newcomers Cabo Verde held Spain to a scoreless draw. Spain dominated possession and created numerous scoring opportunities, but the African side refused to break. Veteran goalkeeper Vozinha delivered a standout performance, making several key saves to preserve the result. The draw secured Cabo Verde's first-ever point in a World Cup match and marked one of the tournament's early shocks.
In Seattle, Egypt continued Africa's impressive start to the competition with a 1-1 draw against Belgium. The Pharaohs struck first when Emam Ashour found the net early in the match. Belgium pushed hard for an equalizer and finally found one in the second half when pressure from substitute Romelu Lukaku led to an own goal. Despite Belgium's attacking efforts, Egypt held firm to earn a deserved point.
Another upset unfolded in Miami as Saudi Arabia battled Uruguay to a 1-1 draw. Abdulelah Al-Amri gave Saudi Arabia a 1-0 lead just before halftime with a goal in the 41st minute. Uruguay increased the pressure after the break and finally leveled the score in the 80th minute through Maximiliano Araújo.
The day's highest-scoring match saw Iran and New Zealand play to a thrilling 2-2 draw. Elijah Just scored twice for New Zealand, while Ramin Rezaeian and Mohammad Mohebbi answered for Iran. Both teams created late chances, but neither could find the winner.
