HOUSTON, TEXAS (June 14, 2026) Germany made a strong statement in its opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, defeating Curacao 7-1 on Sunday at Houston Stadium in Houston. The Group E clash showcased Germany’s attacking depth and ability to turn a close contest into a one-sided result.

Germany got off to a perfect start when Felix Nmecha (No. 23, shown right) scored in the sixth minute, setting a new record for the fastest goal of the 2026 World Cup. Curacao, playing in its first-ever World Cup match, responded with confidence. Livano Comenencia equalized in the 21st minute, giving the Caribbean nation a historic first World Cup goal and briefly stunning the German supporters.

The match changed late in the first half. Germany regained control through defender Nico Schlotterbeck, who scored in the 38th minute. Kai Havertz added another goal in first-half stoppage time to give Germany a 3-1 lead heading into the break.

Germany came out even stronger in the second half. Jamal Musiala (No. 10, shown left) just two minutes after the restart, while the German midfield continued to dominate possession and create chances. Nathaniel Brown added another goal before substitute Deniz Undav made an immediate impact off the bench with a goal and multiple assists. Germany’s movement, passing, and relentless pressure overwhelmed Curacao's defense for the remainder of the match.

Statistically, Germany controlled nearly every aspect of the game. Their attack generated constant opportunities, while players such as Musiala, Florian Wirtz, Nmecha, and Havertz combined to create one of the most explosive performances of the tournament so far. Germany’s victory places them in a strong position in Group E ahead of their next match against Ivory Coast.

Despite the heavy defeat, Curacao earned praise for its effort and determination. The tournament debutants showed courage by attacking when opportunities arose and creating a memorable moment with their first World Cup goal.
