Nine Owls Head to NCAA Outdoor Championship

HOUSTON, TEXAS (June 4, 2008) Nine Rice Owl track and field athletes will compete in seven events at the 27th annual NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship held June 11-14 in Des Moines, Iowa. Action takes place at Drake University's Drake Stadium. A total of 544 student-athletes per gender will compete in the championship.

"We have a lot of scoring opportunities with nine athletes competing," says Rice women’s head coach Jim Bevan. "It is also the most number of athletes that Rice has had qualified for nationals in a long time."

Representing Rice are seniors Desarie Walwyn (100m), Marissa Daniels (10,000m), and Rachel Greff (pole vault); sophomores Brittany Washington (4x100m), Shakera Reece (100m and 4x100m), and Nicole Mericle (3000m steeplechase), and three freshmen including Sarah Lyons (400m and 4x100m), Allison Pye (5000m), Becky Wade (10,000m).
