Guadeloupe Stuns Honduras 2-1 In Gold Cup Play

By Robert H. Kelly

HOUSTON, TX (June 17, 2007) In what could be considered as a battle between David and Goliath, the tiny archipelago of Guadeloupe faced off against Honduras the second game of quarterfinal action of Gold Cup 2007 at Houston’s Reliant Stadium.

Absolutely stunning Honduras and everyone in the stands, Guadeloupe sent the Hondurans home with a 2-1 thumping.

Guadeloupe is an overseas department of France and as a result is a member of the European Union. However, it is allowed to compete as an independent entity in international sports competition.

What makes the Guadeloupe victory so amazing is the fact that they are not even ranked on the current CONCACAF or World Cup rankings.

Guadeloupe struck first in the 17th minute when Jocelyn Angkoma (Etoile de Morne-a-l’Eau) found the goal to take the score to 1-0.

Five minutes later, teammate Richard Edward Socrier (Brest-France) raised the score to 2-0 with an assist from Loic Loval (FC Utrecht-Netherlands). After a mere four minutes of play after the second goal, Loval was issued a yellow card.

After trading possessions numerous times in the first half, Guadeloupe took a 2-0 lead to the locker room at halftime.

The second half saw Honduras take offensive control of the game with Carlos Pavon (Real CD-Spain) picking up where he left off on Wednesday evening, scoring his team’s only goal of the match in the 70th minute.

Guadeloupe will now face Mexico in the second game of the semifinal double header on June 21 in Chicago.

Mexico Bests Costa Rica 1-0 in Gold Cup Quarterfinal Play

By Robert H. Kelly

HOUSTON, TX. (June 17, 2007) Playing before a sell out crowd in Reliant Stadium, Mexico defeated Costa Rica 1-0 in overtime in the first game of a doubleheader that would determine one of the two additional semifinalists of the Gold Cup 2007.

USA and Canada had already qualified to meet in the first semifinals at Soldier Field in Chicago on June 21. Mexico will now face the winner of the Honduras-Guadeloupe matchup in the second game of the semifinals double header.

The first half saw spirited play, with neither team able to find the goal. Superior goalkeeping by Costa Rica’s Jose Francisco Porras (Deportivo Saprissa) kept Mexico at bay well into the second half.

With the score tied at 0-0 at the end of regulation play, both squads went to a thirty minute overtime with each focused finding the goal and advancing to the semifinal round.

Play remained steady until the 67th minute when attacker Jared Borgetti (CD SC Cruz Azul) headed a pass from Adolfo Bautista past Porras to take the score to 1-0.

Seven yellow cards were issued in the game, including two to Costa Rica’s Allan Aleman, who was ejected from the game.

A red card was also issued to Costa Rica’s Mario Camacho in the 120th minute.

The game saw spirited play, with each team attempted on numerous occasions to find the goal.

In a match that could be described as a defensive battle, as neither team could find the offense needed to take the lead in regulation.

Costa Rica, which was forced to play a man down after the red card ejection of Aleman, never could seem to find the offensive punch that was needed to get past Mexico.

Mexico on the other hand, was also unable to get their offense moving, despite playing a man up since the 44th minute.

UPDATE: Cuban Defections During Gold Cup 2007

By Robert H. Kelly

(Houston, Texas, June 13, 2007) It has now come to light that two Cuban soccer players participating in the Gold Cup 2007 are missing and presumed to have defected.

Before last night’s match against Honduras, Cuban forward Lester More and midfielder Osvaldo Alonso were not in attendance at Houston’s Reliant Stadium and there whereabouts are unknown.

It was previous reported that only Alonso had defected, but updated information added More to the list.

There has been no official word from the Cuban camp. However Cuban coach Raul Gonzalez was quoted saying “It’s morally wrong to elave your country.”

These two players join Alberto Delgado and Ret Angel Martinez who defected at the 2002 and forward Maykel Galindo who followed suit in 2005.

Mexico Outlasts Panama 1-0

By Robert H. Kelly

(Houston, Texas, June 13, 2007) In the second game of the Gold Cup 2007 doubleheader at Houston’s Reliant Stadium, Mexico (1-1-0) faced off against Panama (1-0-1).

With Cuba’s exit in their 5-0 loss to Honduras, both teams were assured of advancing to the quarterfinal round. The only question is who would place 2nd in the group and who they would face in the next round.

In a first half that saw very little offense, Mexico and Panama battled to a scoreless tie. The half saw five yellow cards issued in what can be described as much enthusiasm with very little outcome.

The largely Mexican crowd finally saw a result to all their cheering when Carlos Salcido (PSV Eindhoven- Netherlands) connected with the goal to allow Mexico to go up 1-0.

Two more yellow cards were issued in the 79th minute. Panama’s Jamie Penedo (CA Osaduna-Spain) and Mexico’s Nery Castillo (Olimpiakos-Greece) were charged with the infractions.

Panama allowed the nail to be put in their coffin when Rolando Escobar (Tauro FC) was ordered off with a red card in the 85th minute. As a result, Panama was forced to play the last five minutes with a reduced squad.

To add insult to injury, Panama’s Roman Torres (CD La Equidad-Columbia) was also issued a red card in the 88th minute, dropping Panama’s players strength to nine.

In the second half, the officials issued four yellow cards to bring the game total to nine.
The Miller Lite Player of the Match was Carlos Salcido.

Cuban Player Defects During Gold Cup 2007

By Robert H. Kelly

(Houston, Texas, June 13, 2007) In a scene that was reminiscent of the 1960s, a phrase that I last heard uttered by Robin Williams in the movie “Moscow on the Hudson” was spoken at Reliant Stadium prior to this evening’s match between Cuba and Honduras.

Those two words brought back memories of the USSR and USA sports matches of that era, which usually involved as much politics as sports.

The two words that I haven’t heard in a long time: I DEFECT.

Unnamed sources claim that Cuban midfielder Osvaldo Alonoas defected prior to the game. It is unclear whether the defection occurred in Houston or at Cuba’s previous game site in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

As a result, only 17 players suited up for the match against Honduras.

United States law usually protects Cuban nationals who request political asylum while on U.S. soil.

The Cuban delegation has not commended on the reports.

Honduras Destroys Cuba 5-0 in Gold Cup 2007 Action

By Robert H. Kelly

(Houston, Texas, June 13, 2007) In the first game of the final round of Group C in the 2007 Gold Cup, Honduras didn’t take long to take control of the game and basically show Cuba the exit door from the tournament.

Scoring 3 goals in the first half, Honduras defeated Cuba 5-0 in front of a mostly supportive crowd at Houston’s Reliant Stadium.

Carlos Pavon (Real CD Espana) was virtually a one man show, scoring a hat trip in the 1st half.

Not even three minutes into the game, he took a pass from Carlos Costly (GKS Belchatow-Poland) in the third minute to take the score to 1-0.

The second goal of the game came in the 12th minute, as he scored an unassisted goal from in front of the net. Score: Honduras 2 Cuba 0.

His final goal of the first half came in the 42nd minute, as he took a pass from Julio Leon (Genova-Italy), scoring on a header. Score: Honduras 3 Cuba 0.

Cuba’s total lack of offense and porous defense may have been due to a lack of talent on the pitch.

A rumor began circulating around the press box by half time that four Cuban players had been benched. In addition, the rumor progressed that they were possibly trying to defect.

A statement for CONCACAF Media Officer Steve Torres stated, “This is not a matter that involves CONCACAF, and therefore we have no comment.”

Coming right back in the second half, Pavon wasted no time as he connected in the 53rd minute on another assist from Leon give Honduras an insurmountable lead of 4-0.

Both Cuba and Honduras began substituting shortly after Pavon’s fourth goal. Cuba substituted in an attempt to find anything that resembled an offense. Honduras pulled Pavon in the 62nd minute I order to give him a rest for Sunday’s match and to allow other players to get needed playing time.

The final goal of the game came in the form of a penalty kick by Amado Guevara (Chivas USA).

Honduras will now go on to face the third place team from Group A or C in a quarterfinal match on Sunday at Reliant Stadium.

Mexico and Panama Win Opening Games of 2007 Gold Cup

By Robert H. Kelly

(Each Rutherford, NJ, May 8, 2007) Jared Borgetti and Nery Castillo scored and Mexico survived an early scare from Cuba in a 2-1 victory Friday night in the opening Gold Cup2007 match for both sides.

Playing before a largely partisan Mexican crowd of 20,230 at Giants Stadium, Mexico was in control from the opening touch.

But on Cuba's first offensive threat in the 22nd minute, they scored to take the game to 1-0.

Mexico quickly answered to tie the game in the 38th minute when Adolfo Bautista's free kick from 35 yards found Jarad Borgetti undefended in front of the goal. The Cruz Azul striker deflected the ball with a tap of his head past goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa.

Mexico went ahead in the 56th minute when Pavel Pardo broke down the left and fired a hard shot Molina stopped but could not control, allowing Castillo to score into an empty net.

Panama converted its only two shots on goal in the first half, capitalizing on a man advantage after the 24th minute, and beat Honduras 3-2 in their opening 2007 Gold Cup match.

Honduras played the majority of the game with only 10 men after Wilson Palacios was ejected for a severe tackle, after being issued a straight red card.

Panama took the lead on their first scoring chance of the game. Rivera took a touch past Oscar Bonieck Garcia and put the ball under Honduran keeper Orlin Vallecillo in the 33rd minute. It was a mistake that would come back to haunt Honduras later in the match.

Honduras leveled five minutes later and it was Guevara, the 2004 MLS MVP who returned to play for Montagua in Honduras following a dispute with Chivas coach Preki earlier this season, who scored the goal.

Despite Honduras’ effort, Panama delivered the clinching goal on a counterattack two minutes later on a brilliant shot by Jose Luis Garces that he placed into the side-netting from 16 yards out.

Panama faces Cuba while Honduras will meet powerful Mexico Sunday at Giants Stadium.

Toros Drop Three Games To Blue Thunder

By Robert H. Kelly

(June 3, 2007-League City, Texas) The Bay Area Toros drop the final three games of their five game series against the Tarrant County Blue Thunder.

The Toros lost both games of a double header 11-0 and 10-9 on Saturday. They dropped the final game of the series 13-7 on Sunday.

Hitting in the late innings seems to be the problem for the Toros, as they put runs on the board early in the game, but fail to produce in the later innings.

In the first game of the double header, the Toros played errorless ball, but were unable to gain a run. However, they did go 9 for 15 from the plate, but that was not enough for the win.

The lack of effective pitching is also a problem for the Toros. “I don’t feel very good about (the pitching) at all. Too many walks, too many balls. I’d rather be taken out of a game because they’re hitting us - not because we’re walking everybody.” said Jerrett Sandridge.

The Toros used a total of five pitchers in game one, giving up 14 hits, 9 runs, eight of them earned, along with seven walks and only seven strikeouts.

In the second game, the Toros used three pitchers who game up ten runs on seven hits, six of them earned along with 13 walks.

In the final game of the five game series on Sunday, the Toros again fell apart in the late innings as the Blue Thunder rallied from a 5-1 deficit in the third inning, scoring ten runs in the middle innings to win 13-7.

The Toros struck early in the game, taking a 4-1 lead in the early innings, but it was not enough to compensate for the runs scored by Tarrant Count y in the later innings.

Pitching continued to be a problem for the Toros. Sending a total of six pitchers to the mount Sunday night, the Toros gave up 13 runs on 15 hits with 14 walks.

The Toros are now 1-5 for the season and have been outscored 54-34 in six games. They are in fourth place in the Continental Baseball League, 3 ½ games behind the league leading Blue Thunder.

The Toros will begin a five game series on Thursday against the Texas Heat. Thursday is $30 Thursday, with fans getting two game tickets, a Toros cap and a t-shirt for only $30.

Friday is Ladies Night, with all females, regardless of age, get $5 tickets at the gate. On Sunday, all kids receiving one free ice cream from Select Asset Management.

Toros Win 8-5 Over Blue Thunder

By Robert H. Kelly

(June 1, 2007, League City, Texas) The Bay Area Toros recorded the first win in franchise history by defeating the Tarrant County Blue Thunder 8-5 at Wildcat Field in League City.

With the win, the Toros raises their season record to 1-2, while the Blue Thunder goes to 1-1.

The Toros had a monstrous showing at the plate, recording 8 runs on 15 hits. Center fielded Freddy Guzman went three for five with one RBI, with right fielder Zach Williams also tallying three out of five hits.

The Toros exploded in the second and third innings, scoring six runs.

Will Smeltzer got his first win of the season, pitching seven full innings and giving up on 2 runs off of four hits. He also got four strikeouts and walked five.

Designated hitter Mike Medrano extended his hitting streak to three games, going one for four and relief pitcher Keegan Laycock picked up the first save of his professional career.

Laycock faced loaded bases in the top on the ninth inning to preserve the Toros victory.

Pitcher Zach Duncan was credited with the loss for the Blue Thunder.

The Toros and Blue Thunder face off in a double header on Saturday with the final game of the series coming on Sunday.

Bay Area Toros Lose 2-1 to Blue Thunder

By Robert H. Kelly

(May 31, 2007, League City, Texas) The Bay Area Toros dropped their second game of the season (and the second game in the history of the franchise) in their 9-5 loss to the Tarrant Country Blue Thunder at Wildcat Field in League City.

The win was the first for the Blue Thunder, after having their first five games rained out and rescheduled for later in the season. The Toros dropped to 0-2 for the season.

Kevin Whitman started for the Toros, giving up four runs on eight hits but generally kept the Toros in the game. The Toros used five pitchers in the game and the relief was unable to keep the momentum going.

Bobby Crosby was credited with the loss, giving up a two run home run to catcher Billy Schmitt. As a result, Schmitt was named the Coldwell Banker/United Player of the Game. He went 4-5 from the plate.

The Blue Thunder’s Jorge Castillo the winning pitcher.

The Toros will face the Blue Thunder in the second game of their five game series on Friday, with the first pitch at 7:00pm. Gates will open at 5:30 with the first 500 fans through the gate receiving a Toros baseball cap.

Toros Add New Players To Roster

(May 30, 2007, League City, TX)-The Bay Area Toros announced today the signing of three new players to the roster of the new team in League City. The three new players are all on the active roster for this weekends series with Tarrant County beginning May 31 at 7:00 p.m.

Keegan Laycock, a righthanded pitcher from Peru, Indiana, Michael Colvin, a catcher from Dickinson, Texas and Jeremiah Gowey, a righthanded hurler from Sparta, Wisconsin were all added to the Toros avails today. The Toros now have 10 players on the roster that pitch exclusively and 5 others that play a position and could pitch if needed.

With each weekend series in the Continental Baseball League being five games in four days each weekend, a premium will be placed on quality pitching.

"I am really excited about the quality of pitchers that we added today and Mike is really an outstanding defensive catcher who will help make our pitchers better," said Mike Pede, Toros GM. "I think when you look at playing five games in four days every weekend in the hot Texas sun, you had better have quality pitching and a stable of catchers that can get you through those games and these guys are really going to do that. It's a hard business and letting people go (through release) is a difficult part of the game, but we are always trying to get better."

The Toros also announced the release of Brian Green, LHP and Albert Carmona, LHP, neither of which played in a regular season game for the team.

The team will take on the Tarrant County Blue Thunder, managed by former Texas Ranger Curtis Wilkerson, in a weekend series beginning May 31 with single games on Thursday, Friday and Sunday and a split doubleheader at 1:00 and 6:00 on Saturday June 2.

Bay Area Toros Drop League Opener 6-5 to Texas Heat

By Robert H. Kelly

(League City, Texas, May 27, 2007) Despite a three run homer by Mike Medrano and scoring five runs in the fifth inning, the Bay Area Toros dropped their season opener 6-5 to the Texas Heat.

The marathon game, which lasted almost four hours, was the first game played in Continental Baseball League (CBL) history due the postponement of the three game series between the Lewisville Lizards and the Tarrant County Blue Thunder.

Severe weather and flooding in the Dallas area forced league officials to postpone the games to later in the season.

Pitching was a factor in the outcome of the league opener with the Heat using a total of six pitchers. The Toros saw three hurlers take to the mound.

Tyler French started on the mound for the Heat while right handed pitcher Steve Hecker started for the Toros.

Heckler pitched until into the fourth inning, accounting for four strike out and two walks. He also gave up four runs off of five hits and one homerun.

The Toros scored all of their runs in the fifth inning, beginning with Medrano’s three run shot. They scored two additional runs off of the Heat’s Matt Greanead.

The score reminded ties until the top of the tenth inning when the Heat’s Justin Meahger scored from second base for the winning run.

The game saw some historical notes. The first hit in league history was by the Heat’s Mitch Elliott for an infield single. The first homerun was a solo shot by the Heat’s Samson Oldenburg in the 2nd inning the first RBI was by the Heat’s Robby Winn.

The Heat and the Toros take to the field on Monday, May 28 for the second game in the three game series at 5:00pm. Will Smeltzer is slated to take the mound for the Toros.

All Toros home games are played at Clear Creek High School’s Wildcat Stadium in League City.

Bay Area Toros Set For Opening Day On May 27

By Robert H. Kelly

(May 26, 2007, Houston, Texas) On Sunday, May 27 at Clear Creek High School, a new era in Houston sports occurs. The Bay Area Toros Baseball Club begins their inaugural season in the Continental Baseball League.

Billed as an independent league with no affiliation to any major league club, the upstart league features four teams; the Toros, the Texas Heat, the Lewisville Lizards, and the Tarrant Country Blue Thunder.

The Toros will begin their season with a three game series against the Heat, with the first game starting at 5:00pm Sunday.

The Toros will feature some players who have ties to the Houston area sports scene.
Former Willowridge High School standout Marcus Chandler, who played for the Kansas City Royals will play outfield for the Toros.

"I've been trying to get back into the game for at least three years, and having this team (come along) was a plus," said Chandler, who is the second-oldest player on the team. "I still have a lot of ability and I feel like I can play on a higher level. For the last couple of years, (people) have been saying that I'm getting a little bit too old, but I feel like I'm still strong and can compete. The Lord blessed me to make the team.”

Noah Scott, who is the younger brother of the Houston Astros Luke Scott, will be taking to the mount for the Toros. He is also slated to see some time as the team’s first and third baseman.

Other players with from the Houston area include Mike Medrano, who played his high school ball for Pearland High School and later on for the University of Houston, right handed pitcher Sean Kelly (J. Frank Dobie High School and Alvin Community College) and third baseman Daniel Cox (Channelview High School and San Jacinto Junior College).

Toros General Manager Mike Pede sees interest for the local community as high. "The response in the Bay Area and all around the city of Houston has been phenomenal. Fans seem excited, we're selling a bunch of tickets and people are signing up for camps and all sorts of things. Hopefully, we can hold up our end of the deal, win some
games and pay off their loyalty.”

Hunter Pence for NL Rookie of the Year

By Robert H. Kelly

Houston Astros' center fielder Hunter Pence is certainly making a name for himself.

Having watched ball players all of my life, I find him a breath of fresh air in the hurricane that is Major League Baseball.

I can't quite put my finger on it, but I really like this kid. He has the look of an athlete. He doesn't seem stuck on himself, and he looks as if he is playing the game just because he loves it.

I know that sounds cliches; like a line from an old time movie, but he could very well be the future of the Astros franchise.

Look at his stats since he was called up on April 28: 23 games, 88 at bats, 30 hits,11 runs, 4 home runs, and 16 RBIs. His batting average is .341.

If this kid is not a serious candidate for National League Rookie of the Year, then many are not keeping track of him.

TexSport Publications is starting a blog to keep up with Pence and incredible rookie season.

Bay Area Toros Go 1-1 in Exhibition Play

By Robert H. Kelly

(
Houston, TX, May 19, 2007) In their second game of their exhibition season the Toros lost 5-1 loss to the Northwest Wildcats.

Looking to work out their roster for their upcoming inaugural season was the major goal of manager Jim Bolt.

The Toros pitching gave up a total of 11 walks, along with a three run home. The one shining moment on defense was a diving catch in the 8th inning by second baseman Josh Odell.

On offense, all the Toros could manage was a single run in the bottom on a single RBI by Joseph Mandile. They also accounted for fifteen strikeouts from the superior pitching of the Wildcats. Right handed pitcher Albert Carmona was credited with the loss.

The Toros showed improvement in play in all positions, however Manager Jim Bolt was quoted in saying, “The team cannot have that many strikeouts. Our pitchers need to bear down on their strike zones. The Wildcats should have been held to one run, if you took away all the walks.”

The Toros pre-season record is now at 1-1 after their first game 8-4 victory over the Friendswood Bengals.

The Toros will take to the field for their third exhibition game at the Pre-Season Challenge Series at Killeen High School in Killeen, Texas. They will face the Texas Heat in a 2:00pm game on Sunday, May 20, 2007. They will follow then play their final exhibition game with a home game tune up on May 23 against the Houston Apollos at Clear Creek High School Wildcat Stadium. Game time will be 7:00pm. Bode Miller Leaves USA Ski Team

By Robert H. Kelly

Former Olympic medalist and World Cup champion Bode Miller is leaving the U.S. National Sli Team.

The 29-year-old Miller won two silver medals at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics, but was shut out at the 2006 Turin Games despite being a favorite in nearly every Alpine discipline. He was criticized for spending too much time in local clubs.

From a journalist's viewpoint, I can't say this was something I didn't expect.

This past summer, I was on assignment covering the World Scholar-Athlete Games in Rhode Island. Bode was invited to speak to the athletes competing at the Games.

When he did show up, late, in walked in wearing blue jeans and a orange Nile t-shirt.

He spoke for a a few minutes and opened up the floor for questions. Many of the athletes posed questions, and his responses were typical of a self-centered, egotistical athlete that had become.

He is a classic example of an athlete that is in it for himself, and could care less what others think.

He fits in with other athletes this publication has come to question in the past, such as Shane Davis, Barry Bonds, and Roger Clements.

Good riddance to Bode, He will be missed by almost no one.
