Grand Champion steer sold for $400,000 at Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo

HOUSTON, TEXAS (March 22, 2014) Saturday, March 22, 2014 at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo kicked off with the Junior Market Steer Auction. Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion were determined on Friday evening with Flint Newman receiving top honors and Kaden Hatla earning reserve honors.

Newman, representing Martin County 4-H of Stanton Texas, sat back and watched a bidding war for his Grand Champion Charolais, with the group of consisting of Evelyn and Roger Bethune; Vanessa, Chris, Kyle, and Rhianna Bruegger; Sally and Rigo Flores; and Mary Alice and Ed Lester bidding $400,000.

The winning bid was more than the winning bid in 2013 of $360,000, but was well below the world record price of $600,001 set in 2002. The 18-year old will receive a guaranteed payment of $75,000 with a potential payment of $85,000.

In the Reserve Grand Champion auction, the Champagne Cowgirls bid $201,000 for Hatla’s Limousin.

The group of 18 women matched the winning bid from 2013, but came in under the $365,000 price from 2001. The 17-year-old Nazareth FFA student from Dimmitt, Texas will receive a guaranteed payment of $40,000 with a maximum possible payout of $45,000.

The activities continued on Saturday afternoon and early evening with the championships of each event in the rodeo.

The top four places in the champion round advance to the Shootout finals will the winners becoming Rodeo Houston champions.

After the rodeo competition, the musical performance of the evening began with The Band Perry taking to the circular stage on the dirt inside Reliant Stadium.

Houston Dynamo goes to 2-0 in 2014 with win over Montreal Impact

HOUSTON, TEXAS (March 15, 2014) Will Bruin scored his third goal of the season in the 40th minute Saturday evening, March 15, 2014, to enable the Houston Dynamo to down the Montreal Impact by the score of 1-0 at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston. 

Bruin got the ball from forward Giles Barnes and directed the shot into the edge of the box.

The ball defected off Impact goalkeeper Troy Perkins and into the net for the score.

The Dynamo raised their season record to 2-0-0 (six points) while Montreal fell to 0-2-0 (0 points).

The game did not seem to be hampered by the constant rain during the match and the 18,245 fans in attendance were treated to a lively game that saw five yellow cards issued.

Houston’s Kofi Sarkodie and Jermaine Taylor both picked up the cautions for fouls while Montreal players Felipe Martins, Hassoun Camera, and Heran Bernardello received the cautions.

Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear, when questioned in the post-game press conference about the play of Bruin in the first two games of the season, he responded:

"He's not doing anything different. It's just that the balls are going in. If you hit the target you give yourself a chance to score. He was a bit lucky tonight, but he's been unlucky at times as well. Sometimes it evens out. The bounce went our way, and that's what it took to win the game."

The Dynamo will have two weeks to prepare for their next match as the travel to Canada to face the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday, March 29, 2014.

They will return to BBVA Compass Stadium on Saturday, April 5, 2014 where the plat in-state rival, FC Dallas with a 7 p.m. start.

Broiler, Turkey Grand Champion named at Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo

HOUSTON, TEXAS (March 15, 2014) Competition at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is not limited to events such as bull riding and steer wrestling. On Thursday, March 13, 2014, the Junior Market Poultry Auction was held and record amounts were earned by the broilers and turkeys in the auction.FFA and 4-H members from around the state of Texas prepare just as hard as traditional athletes for what they consider the championship season of their chosen passion.

The Grand Champion Market Broilers was won by 10-year old Weston Bauer, representing Bastrop Country 4-H from Red Rock, Texas. The winning bid of $165,000 was made by Tommy Fogle, Greg Miller, John Schiller, and Mitzy and Tom Fleissner, , representing Energy XXL. Their bid exceeded the winning price from 2013; $160,000, but was well below the world record price of $201,000 set in 2007. Bauer will receive a guaranteed payment if $30,000 with a potential maximum payment of $40,000.

In the Tom Turkey Division, the Grand Champion Turkey was won by 18-year old Andrew Horacefield of Crosby, Texas, representingHarris County 4-H. The winning bid was $115,000 by Statoil, Terre Albert, Vanessa and Chris Bruegger and Belinda and Mark Young. Their bid exceeded the 2013 price ($110,000) but was also under the world record set in 2007 of $175,000. Horacefield will also receive a guaranteed payment if $30,000 with a potential maximum payment of $40,000.

The Reserve Grand Champion Market Broiler went to B. F. Terry High School FFA student Grant Hruzek. The 18-year-old from Rosenberg, Texas tallies a $125,000 price for his entry.Beverly Wren was the highest bidder, with her bid beating the 2013 price of $105,000.

The Reserve Grand Champion Junior Market Turkey went to 18-year-old Clay Glaze of the Wharton County 4-H of El Campo, Texas. A world record was set with the winning bid; $140,000 by Shirley and Randy Meyer, Robin Young-Ellis and Joe Ellis, Deanna L. and Larry C. Johnson, Kelly and Becky Joy.

Both Hruzek and Glaze will receive a guaranteed payment of $15,000, with a potential maximum payment of $20,000.

Luke Bryan headlines March 17 performance at Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo

HOUSTON, TEXAS (March 17, 2014) On Monday, March 17, 2014, country music favorite Luke Bryan returns to the revolving stage inside Reliant Stadium for his third consecutive performance at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. The winner of numerous country music awards, Bryan previous preformed in Houston in 2012 and 2013, to rave reviews and sellout crowds.

The 37-year-old country and country pop singer and songwriter from Leesburg, Georgia broke into the country music scene in 2007 and has been going strong ever since. In 2010 at the Academy of Country Music (ACM) Awards, he received three awards; Top New Solo Vocalist, Top New Artist, and Breakthrough Video of the Year. He followed up the record setting year of 2010 with a sweep at the American Country Awards in 2012; scoring nine wins including Artist of the Year. In 2013, his Sunday, March 16 performance is ranked number two on the all-time Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo paid attendance at 75,242.

Bryan has released four albums during his career: I’ll Stay Me (2007), Doin’ My Thing (2009), Tailgates & Tanlines (2011) and Crash My Party (2013). He has been nominated for three ACM awards for 2014: Entertainer of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year, and Album of the YearCrash My Party. Prior to his performance, the second round of the BP Super Series V will be contested inside Reliant Stadium. Super Series competition includes tie-down roping, bareback riding, team roping, saddle bronc riding steer wrestling, barrel racing, bull riding and calf scramble.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo continues through Sunday, March 23, with rodeo competition, livestock show and judging, and nightly musical performances.

Northwestern State extends season; downs Nicholls State, 88-71

KATY, TEXAS (March 13, 2014) The No. 4 Northwestern State Demons extended their season Thursday evening (March 13, 2014) by defeating the No. 5 Nicholls State Colonels by the score of 88-72 in second round action of the 2014 Southland Conference men’s basketball tournament in Katy, Texas.

Those fans in attendance from the Houston metropolitan area saw five Demon players score in double figures with forward DeQuan Hicks coming off the bench to score 21 points and pull down 10 rebounds.

The 6-7 senior from Racine, Wisconsin shot 6-of-12 from the field and 9-of-12 from the free throw line.

Then double-double was his 10th this season and the 13th of his career.

Starting center Marvin Frazier and starting guard Jalan West both connected for 18 points each, while Ziklteran Woodley hit for 11 and Brison White tallied 10.

With the win, the Demons advance to the semifinal round where they will face the number one seed, the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks at 5 p.m. on Friday, March 14.

SFA is coming off a 29-2 season in which they were 18-0 in conference play.

They two losses came against Texas, 72-62 on November 12 and on November 23, where they dropped a 66-58 decision to East Tennessee State.

Nicholls State had three players in double figure; led by Jeremy Smith with 24 points.

Dantrell Thomas and T.J. Carpenter added 12 and 11 points, respectively.

The Demons had a slight edge in rebounding (46-42), in the paint points (38-34) fast break points (10-4) and bench points (31-11).

The Colonels end their season with a 14-15 record.

The Southland Conference men’s tournament continues through Saturday, March 15 with the championship game scheduled for 7:30 p.m. which will be televised on ESPN2 and ESPN3.

Southland Conference basketball tournament returns to Merrell Center in Katy, Texas

KATY, TEXAS (March 12, 2014) The Southland Conference will kick-off the 2014 men’s basketball tournament on Wednesday, March 13, 2014 at the Leonard E. Merrell Center in the Houston suburb of Katy, Texas. 

Eight teams qualified for the post-season tournament which will determine the conference’s entry into the NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament which begins the following week.

Wednesday’s first game will see the No. 5 seed, Nicholls State facing the No. 8 seed, Southeastern Louisiana.

Nicholls State posts a 10-8 conference record and a 13-14 season record while Southeastern Louisiana is 7-11 in conference play and 12-17 for the season.

Tip-off will be at 5 p.m. CDT, with the winner facing No. 4 seed Northwestern State (16-13, 12-6 SLC) on Thursday, March 13, 2-14 at 5 p.m. CDT.

The second game on Wednesday will have No. 6 Oral Roberts (16-15, 10-8 SLC) playing No. 7 McNeese State (11-19, 9-9 SLC) with a 7:30 p.m. start.

The winner will advance to the next round, playing No. 3 Sam Houston State at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 13, 2014.

Action continues on Friday, March 14 with No. 2 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and No. 1 Stephen F. Austin playing the team winning on Thursday, March 13.

The top four seed earned byes into the later round of the tournament as a result of their season records.
In 2014, No. 2 seed Northwestern State upset No. 1 seed Stephen F. Austin 68-66 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

The Demons lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament by the score of 79-47 to the Florida Gators.
SFA was invited to play in the NIT Tournament, losing in the first round to Stanford, 58-57.

The first four games of the conference tournament will be streamed live for free on the Southland Conference Digital Network.

No. 30 Houston Cougars down Baylor, 7-2

HOUSTON, TEXAS (March 11, 2014) After a 2-1 road trip to the west coast, the Houston Cougars returned home to the friendly confines of Cougar Field and downed the Baylor Bears, 7-2 in front of 2,012 fans on Tuesday, March 11, 2014.

With the win, the Cougars move to 12-3 on the season and 8-0 at home.

The 8-0 start at home is the best since 1993, when Houston went 11-0.

Baylor struck first with two runs in the first inning on runs by right fielder Adam Toth and designated hitter Grayson Porter.

Justin Montemayor cut the Bears’ lead to one on a solo-shot to deep center field on his first pitch from Baylor RHP Drew Tolson.

The Cougars added another run in the second inning when center fielder Ashford Fulmer singled to center field, sending second baseman Josh Vidales home from third base.

Catcher Caleb Barker gave the Cougars the lead in the third inning on a fielder’s choice to score shortstop Frankie Ratcliff.

Pinch hitting for Jacob Lueneburg in the fifth inning, Jacob Campbell singled to center field and scored Vidales.

Houston extended its lead in the seventh inning when right fielder Kyle Servance singled to left center field, scoring Landon Appling and Barker, from second and third base, respectively.

They added an insurance run in the eighth inning when Barker singled through the left side; sending Vidales home from second.

Vidales went 1-for-2 at the plate, scoring three runs while Barker was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Collectively, Houston was 7-for-12 with seven RBI while only striking out twice.

Right-handed pitcher Andrew Lantrip, throwing three innings in relief, got his first win of the season.

For the Bears, Grayson Porter and Aaron Dodson each tallied two hits in the loss, with Tolson receiving his third loss of the season at the mound.

The Cougars will next face Towson in a three-game weekend series beginning on Friday, March 14.
First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday, March 15.

On Sunday, March 16, game time is 1 p.m.

The Cougars are currently ranked number 30 in the country by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

Each evening begins at 6:45 p.m. with the BP Super Series followed by the evening concert.

The BP Super Series is an international, invitational only rodeo with cowboys and cowgirls competing for over $1.6 million in prize money. Events include bareback riding, barrel racing, tie-down roping, team roping, bull riding, steer wrestling, saddle bronc riding and bull riding.

Following each evening’s rodeo competition, the musical part of the evening begins.

On Monday, March 10, REO Speedwagon takes to the circular stage at Reliant Stadium. This will be the second appearance for the quintet, with their first appearance at Rodeo Houston coming in 2002.

Tuesday, March 11 has Georgia native Jason Aldean making his fifth straight appearance in Houston. Jake Owen headlines the Wednesday evening, March 13 performance, followed by Maroon 5 on Thursday, March 13. Keith Urban closes out the week on Friday, March 14. Owen also appeared in 2013, with Maroon 5 performing in 2005 and 2006. Urban has made four previous performances in 2005, 2009, 2010, and 2011.

The final weekend of spring break will see Hunter Hayes performing on Saturday, March 15 and Pesado on Go Tejano Day on Sunday, March 16. In addition to the concerts inside Reliant Stadium, country music fans can enjoy the best-in-Texas music nightly inside The Hideout. Located on the east side of Reliant Stadium, the Hideout is open to fans 21-years of age and older with admission included in the cost of their admission to Reliant Park. Performances included during spring break week include Kenefick on Monday, March 10, John Slaughter on Tuesday, March 11, and Junior Gordon on Wednesday, March 12.

REO Speedwagon headlines Rodeo Houston on March 10, 2014

HOUSTON, TEXAS (March 10, 2014) Baby boomers and classic rock and roll music aficionados will certainly be in heaven on Monday evening, March 10, 2014 as REO Speedwagon takes to the circular, rotating stage inside Reliant Stadium at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

The quintet, who made their first appearance at Rodeo Houston in 2002, returns for their second concert to entertain rodeo fans following the nightly rodeo competition.,
Keyboard and piano player Neal Doughty, who has been with the group since its inception in 1967 will lead his four band mates in such favorites as “Take It on the Run,” “Can’t Fight This Feeling,” “Keep on Loving You,” and “Times for Me to Fly.” Doughty also plays synthesizer and organ.

Lead vocal Kevin Cronin, who also plays rhythm guitar and adds time on piano and keyboard, has been with the band from 1976. He also played with the group from 1972-1973. Bruce Hall has played bass guitar and sang vocals since 1977, with Dave Amato playing lead guitar and vocals since 1989. Bryan Hitt, who joined in 1989, contributes to the group’s unique sound on drums and percussion. The band has sold over 40 million records and have had thirteen Top 40 hits, inc1uding two number one songs.

Following their appearance at Rodeo Houston, REO Speedwagon will head to Wichita Falls, Texas for a March 12, 2014 concert at Wichita Falls Memorial Auditorium.
On March 14, 2014 they will performance at the Stiefel Theatre in Salina, Kansas.
In early 2014, it was announced that REO Speedwagon and the rock group Chicago would be teaming up for 15 concert dates throughout 2014.

Cronin was quoted on the All Access website concerning the collaborated concerts between REO Speedwagon and Chicago:

"With so many personal connections between various members of REO and Chicago, it is amazing that we have never actually toured together. I love it that the Chicago guys feel the way we do about truly playing together when you tour together.  Can you imagine the Chicago horn section on 'Roll With the Changes'? That would blow my mind! HOUSTON, TEXAS (March 7, 2014) The first round of the BP Super Series at Rodeo Houston were contested on March 4-6, 2014 prior to the start of each evening’s concert with the top two finishers in each event advancing to the semi-finals on March 19, 2014.

Final placing in each event was based on a three-round aggregate score or time on the dirt inside Reliant Stadium in Houston.

Tie down roping saw Timber Moore from Aubrey, Texas place first with a time of 28.1 seconds and $7000 in prize money.

Caleb Smidt (Bellville, Texas) took the runner-up spot with a two-round score of 19.2 seconds and $3000 in prize money.

Richmond Champion from the Woodlands, Texas tool top honors in bareback riding with a score of 254 points and $7,000.

Seth Hardwick (Laramie, Wyoming) secured second place with 249 points and $4,500.

Arky Rogers of Lake City, Florida and Travis Woodard of Stephenville, Texas teamed up to top all competitors in team roping with the time of 18.1 seconds.

The first place finish earned the duo $17,400.

The team of Colman Proctor (Pryor, Oklahoma) and Jake Long (Coffeyville, Kansas) placed second with the time of 19.9 seconds and $9000.

Saddle bronc riding saw Milford, Utah native Cody Wright take top honors with 252 points and $7,350.

Isaac Diaz of Desdemona, Texas placed second with 245 points and $2800.

The top two places in steer wrestling went to Casey Martin of Sulpher, Louisiana and Ben Shofner of Jasper, Texas.

Their times were 134.4 seconds and 14.9 seconds respectively, with Martin earning $8,050 and Shofner pocketing $5,550.

Brittany Diaz of Solen, North Dakota outraced all-comers in barrel racing with the time of 43.91 seconds.

Second place went to Lisa Lockhart of Oelroichs, South Dakota.

The pair earned $7,000 and $6,700, respectively.

Bull riding saw J.W. Harris of Mullin, Texas take top honors with a score of 165 points and $6,200 followed by Michael Riggs of Statesboro, Georgia with 163 points and $4,350.

Action continues in Super Series action through March 18.

Will Bruin's two goals lead Houston Dynamo to 4-0 win over NE Revolution

HOUSTON, TEXAS (March 8, 2014) The Houston Dynamo got off to a fine start to kickoff the 2014 MLS season by defeating the New England Revolution by the score of 4-0 at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston, Texas on Saturday, March 8, 2014.

Kicking off his fourth year on the Dynamo, forward Will Bruin took to the pitch like a man possessed; scoring two goals in the first 13 minutes to lead Houston to their first win of 2014.

He started the game with a goal in the second minute, when defender Kofi Sarkodie passed the ball to Bruin, who deftly shot it past goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth for the score.

The fleet-footer Bruin, who had eight goals in 2013, added his and the Dynamo’s second goal for the season in the 13th minute on a pass from defender Corey Ashe.

The alert Ashe was quick to get a turnover from the Revolution in their zone, and crossed it to Bruin, who skillfully slid it into the net.

It took Bruin a mere 13 minutes to score his first two goals of the 2014 season.

In 2013 it took the former Indiana Hoosier 327 minutes to achieve the same feat.

Bruin was not done for the evening, as he added an assist and a yellow card to his stats for 2014.

In the 23rd minute, Bruin got the ball at the corner of the box and passed it to midfielder Oscar Boniek Garcia, who came into the box and sailed it home for the Dynamo’s third score.

Houston added an insurance goal in added time when midfielder Ricardo Clark shot from 20-yards out and defected the ball off teammate Omar Cummings’ head for the score.

Clark was credited with an assist on the goal.

As the match progressed, tempers flared a bit in the 64th minute when Bruin and defender Darius Barnes scuffled in front of the Revolution goal.

The “indiscretion” resulted in a yellow card for both Bruin and Barnes.

New England defender A.J. Soares also received a yellow card in the 76th minute for a hard tackle.

The 22,320 fans in attendance at BBVA Compass, which was a record for a Dynamo game, were introduced to members of the Houston Dash during halftime.

The Dash, which is the newest member of the National Women’s Soccer League, will begin play in 2014 with their first game scheduled for April 12, 2014 against the Portland Thorns at BBVA Compass Stadium.

The Dynamo will next face the -8Montreal Impact on Saturday, March 15 at BBVA Compass Stadium.

Sam Houston State shuts down No. 26 Texas Tech; 10-6

HOUSTON, TEXAS (March 1, 2014) Boosted by three multi-run innings, the Sam Houston State Bearkats downed the No. 26 Texas Tech Red Raiders by the score of 10-6 in second day action at the Houston College Classic at Minute Maid Park, in Houston, Texas on Saturday, March 1, 2014.

The Bearkats put up a massive five-run second inning and followed with two-run innings in the sixth and seventh to put away Texas Tech.

The Red Raiders scored two runs in the first and ninth innings and added single runs in the second and fifth.

Center fielder Colt Atwood went 3-for-5, scoring two runs and knocking in one RBI.

Catcher Anthony Azar was 3-for-4 and right fielder HaydenSimerly when 3-for-5 for the Bearkats.

Sam Odom, pitching 4.1 innings in relief, gave up one run off three hits and struck out three in receiving the win.

Matt Withrow, who pitched 2.2 starting innings and gave up five hits on six runs, got the loss.

Sam Houston raised their record to 10-1 for the season and will next face Texas at 10:05 a.m. on Sunday, March 2.

Texas Tech fell to 8-3 in 2014 and will next play Rice with a 1:35 p.m. first pitch on Sunday, March 2.
